when I was twelve, I made a drawing of this picuture of boxing Bowie's ... I even translated the lyrics of the whole album (I'm Italian, I was just 'an absolute beginner' in learning English at that time!), and, finally, I presented a short dissertation about Bowie for the final exam of my junior high school. I got the highest mark, lol :-) !!
You know the intro is playful, like a cat prancing about. It has been a long time since I listened to this song . I bought the tape when new, and it sound's as good as new. And finding out Stevie Ray was bending the strings is a major bonus.
This version is by far the best! Fel in love with it when I discovered it on the flip side to Lets Dance 12"..great stuff with added bonus of Stevie Ray Vaughn! :-) Thanks for posting !
:/ The original recording remains much stronger than this, "more accessible," version for Let's Dance. I have the same opinion about his re-recording of China Girl, as the original version recorded for Iggy Pop's The Idiot (which Bowie produced) was much rawer and left a larger impact on my music taste than the neutering accomplished through Let's Dance. Personally, his last great album was Scary Monsters.
@TheCorazyCam More accessible does not equal stronger, in any sense of the owrd. Justin Bieber is "more accessible" Glee is "more accessible". Lady Gaga is "more accessible" This just flat rocks. And the only thing neutered was Girogio Moroder's soulless Disco-Synth original. I think you have it backwards friend. But to each their own.
@karlmoles65 You misinterpreted my comment. "The original recording remains much stronger than this, 'more accessible,' version for Let's Dance." As in the original version was stronger than the Let's Dance version, while the Let's Dance version can be seen as more accessible than the original recording. My personal favourite Bowie song is "Heroes," one of his most experimental songs to date. Accessibility and strength, as we agree, are very different qualities for a song.
@karlmoles65 It's not a problem. The entire Heroes album is probably my favourite Bowie album. :D Brian Eno is quite the creative producer. By the way, I thought Cat People was a David Bowie original that he wrote for the film of the same name. Girogio Moroder? Who might he be?
@TheCorazyCam Giorgio Moroder was a musician and producer, very influential in Disco and New Wave. He's the man behind the music for the original version of this. He became well know for his soundtracks, for Cat People, Midnight Express, and American Gigolo. He worked with Bowie, Blondie, Donna Summer, and many others. I actually like a lot of his music, and even the other version of this, just not as well.
:/ The original recording remains much stronger than this, "more accessible," version for Let's Dance. I have the same opinion about his re-recording of China Girl, as the original version recorded for Iggy Pop's The Idiot (which Bowie produced) was much rawer and left a larger impact on my music taste than the neutering accomplished through Let's Dance. people are calling this hard rock? are they on crack? Stevie ray Vaughn on guitar blues/rock guitar. go back to your lady gaga, usher crap.p.s. there both great versions.
@jemappelledrwholuvr It's fairly heavy, but can't agree it's too heavy for Bowie. He experimented with almost every style of Rock in his career. and that's his genius. Bowie can take any style and make it his own.
@MrEggman1980 Let's Dance is BY FAR Bowie's best album. I'll stack it up against someone calling himself a "Ziggy Stardust" anytime. Or maybe you think a spider from Mars can play guitar better than Stevie Ray Vaughn
I had forgotten how much I liked David Bowie, till my son was watching some cartoon that had the Bowie and Jagger Dancin in the Street video, which prompted me to go online and watch Bowie videos :-) I like this version!
@LordHeath1972 If the uploader does not want to say where it comes from I think I had this track just as is here on a 12" maxi single circa 1982 in Aspen, much more range available someone should do it again and post it.
what do you mean not the original version??? this is what I remember being the original! the only version that mattered to me anyway! Stevie Ray made the song with his style!
@rfumanji yes, the original version is slower and so different! you've probably heard it in Inglorious Bastards <3 the original one was made for "Cat people", the movie, and it exists in two versions: the one used in the film is a bit longer (one more stanza) though the original version is the one in Let's Dance album, this one is quite difficult to find
BTW thanks for posting thiiiis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bowie is my favourite singer
Thanks again for the response! OK...Power Station...I vaguely remember a band by that name. Perhaps it was in the 80's, they had a couple of hits? As I remember....that drummer was kind of like a main force in that band...he was really "heavy"...especially heavy-footed? Seems like they were around for awhile then just disappeared. Although here in southern Arizona....we ain't exactly in the mainstream of "hip" anything....music included. Which really is ok with me. Joel
@karlmoles65 Karl....whoa!! That...was a fast reply. Thanks!
Certainly I've heard of Omar Hakim....and I should know who Tony Thompson has been with...but I don't. What's his drumming heritage? Thanks again...Joel in Tucson
@naderchaser Hi Joel! Tony Thompson is one of my favorite Drummers of all time,. He was first in the band Chic with Nile Rodgers, then he was in The Power Station with The Taylor brothers (from Duran Duran) and Robert Palmer.
Gotta give it to Bowie: best move he made while recording this album was getting Stevie Ray Vaughn to play guitar all over it! between that & Nile Rogers producing, this album had some wings & this song alone proves it! I had the 45 of "Let's Dance"in '83 and this was the B-side, wore the damn thing out just listening to SRV over & over!
Yea, this version is great. I'll always remember the live at philly album circa '73-4. I think that album has to included with any top 10-100 countdown, but I never see anything about it. I also think Bowie was and is one of the top vocalist of our time.

@loon2u4fun A "record player", Karl?? Man....I haven't heard that phrase in a long, long time. lol. But dig it, I'm 56 tonite...and STILL have the old 45 player that my late folks had when I was about 3 or 4. The player itself is probably only 14 inches by 14 inches wide. Maybe a foot tall. Only made for 45's...nothing else. It has this long, gold colored button that you push when you wish to re-cue the record. Only, it shocks the life outta you when you push it. I'll get it fixed someday.
What's this? A whole page of comments about a cover song with no one having a fight over which version sucks and who's a gay for thinking otherwise? Go for it Bowie, thanks for attracting a more mature set of listeners!
@HuDaFuK Amen! I agree wholeheartedly. Not only am I proud and honored by the 200+K views. I am also grateful for the huge amounts of positive comments and lack of immaturity!

I would not have been surprised if Tin Machine had added this song to their live set...Reece certainly could handle it, and it would have been thunderous on stage..
this is more "Bowie" than the original, but i love this re-recording, and it also suits the whole theme of the Lets Dance album, but both the versions are amazing in thier own ways, its not right to compair them.
Stevie Ray tied this song to the rest of the album. The original wasn't as good as this. Original was/isn't bad, just not as good as this. Bloody fine!
@drewskee67 ~ SRV fan myself, but can't fully agree. Bowie's vocals on the original are amazing. That powerful and tremelo heavy "GAS-OH-LEE-E-E-E-E-N" during the first verse of the original is just yowzah. The original's dramatic and fits the mood and score of the movie. Yes SRV's playing ties the song to the rest of the album. He's still great(living beyond this mortal coil for sure). However this song has so much more life in it than it's place on Let's Dance.
Haven't heard a version I don't like. Hell I even like Glen Danzig's cover. It must be a testament to the song itsself that it actually holds up so well. Haven't heard a cover surpass the original or this, but still haven't heard a horrible version.
unbelievably low, the level of mind and spirit an tongue on youtube, they kill each other verbally about who is the faster or more famous guitarist. it shows that too many idle dorks only sit around instead of practicing their guitars themselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
karlmole, are you stupid or nuts or both?? what the fuck have I got to do with any awards? i am just a totally independent in the true sense of the word music delecter and say what I fucking FEEL! alvin lee has played woodstock with ten years after and needs no extra recognition after this - both he and srv and this unspeakably boring paul gilbert etc bore me to death and trouble is they create zillions of still dafter imitators than even they were, argh

Not a huge Bowie fan but this is one of the best songs written. SRV took it, ran with it and put it over the edge.

@drewskee67 Thanks, amazing isn't it?

And Justin Beiber

Bowie apparently hired Vaughan, for a low amount on this album. But Stevie came thru and sounds wonderful.

He just PWNS all over it

karlmole, are you stupid or nuts or both?? what the fuck have I got to do with any awards? i am just a totally independent in the true sense of the word music delecter and say what I fucking FEEL! alvin lee has played woodstock with ten years after and needs no extra recognition after this - both he and srv and this unspeakably boring paul gilbert etc bore me to death and trouble is they create zillions of still dafter imitators than even they were, argh
