@antwankinney1231 Why are Koreans, South, so interested in 1930s flying boat? It's a nice piece of old technology, but I don't understand why this video would be a favorite of Koreans, South.
PanAm (Pan American World Airways) the greatest airline ever to grace the skies. What has gone wrong, for this great airline to disseappear (like so many others) ... Politics, that's what !
I long wondered what it might be like to cross the Pacific on one of these beauties... and then I realized what the noise from four props would have been like for all those long, long hours...
I noticed Susan Hayward is in this. I just bought some of her movies off of lovingtheclassics. If you are interested google it (lovingtheclassics) and you will find her actual movie and more.
I first became aquainted with this plane, when I was reading a novel. Almost the entire novel was set on board the plane, as it was flying from England to the United States. Thanks for posting this.
@DandAinTac Is that what it was called? The author sounds more familiar to me than the title, right now. It was a good book. The plane must have been a classic.
I saw a documentary about this plane (and others) on tv a while ago. I'm in love with the 314 and the Martin 130. Beautiful planes! To bad they don't make this kind of planes anymore.
Great video. Do not forget that there was a stop at Horta, the Azores. I read a novel author David Beaty, romantic story placed there and got intrested of this early route.
I never flew in one but I was on a ship in mid-atlantic in June of 1941 when we were buzzed by one. They saw us and came down to about 500 feet and flew over us. Someone said, "Just think, by this evening they will be in New York". Everyone was awed by this miracle of modern technology.
Regarding the crash mentioned on the sidebar, how in the world did the pilot accidentally touch a wingtip to the water? It has to be a good 20-30 feet from that tip to the ground! You would have to be trying REAL hard to dig a tip - remember, it was a river, so the waves could not have been gigantic.
Truly monumental pilot error if that's how it happened. Sounds like he was showing off and got too slow, and too banked. Shame.
Somewhere I've got photos my Dad took of the Clipper prototype dipping her wingtips into Elliot Bay, since the sponsons weren't big enough, & there's also a shot of 3 or 4 of them at Boeings' terminal at the north end of Lake Washington.
I like the plane....since I read the novel....night over waters from Ken Follett...I just would like to learn more of this fantastic plane which had a bad fate due to that insane WW2...it was used though but not in the way it was constructed...
Great constructions...like the Do X for example where meant do dy cause of the bloody times the world had to face...
You wouldn't have though World War II was so insane if you had been one of the 11-million people who were exterminated in the Nazi concentration camps.
Listen...If anyone who was ever a passenger or flight crew on the Pan Am 314 clipper ever reads this, I wish you could write me and tell me what it was like. That would be a thrill for me to read about.
Next to Lockheed's Constellation, this is the other most beautiful propeller airliner ever built. It's a shame that Boeing didn't save one of them for future generations to enjoy.

My dad flew on these when he worked for Pan Am on this route. It must have been great, as he talked about them until he passed away.
