  • @tylzen. I totally agree with you 100 percent ,there's nothing more to say.

  • I would say the first two thirds of this video is reasonable. Jus because of reasonable, logical and thought in general. But you obviously took a bit off in the end. What i mean is that you go from responding with reasonable force to becoming emotional over the subject itself and mentioning that it's "wrong". I have a problem with these concepts of "right" and "wrong" because it builds on something that the majority of people have inside, therefore I think you should try to be a bit more object

  • Secular humanism: no matter what he believes, he is still a person, and always deserves the respect you would afford to anyone. It's not acceptable for anyone to promote hate and violence.

  • In many, not all places in the US, even with all of the situation's contexts missing from the example, the reactions were very self preservational. If you haven't seen or experienced the level of insanity that Christian fascists quickly ramp up to, or how they hair trigger into a violent mob, with just a few key words, you could not understand. Calling 911 for local first responders to come, can be an act of suicide. We atheists, are in bad cases, treated like the Jews were, in 1930's Germany.

  • I with you 100% on this one.

  • I think people are just venting if this were a real life situation it wouldn't have happened that way.

  • @MistressArte I sincerely hope so.

  • @Tylzen If they did act on it there would be a lot of Atheist in prison and there isn't we're underrepresented. People are just frustrated with being pissed on all the time, I know sometimes it feels good when I tear apart a hateful theist in the comment section making them look like a total idiot however that's different then punching one of them in the face. If it were irl I'd protect the person they are trying to hurt by getting them away from those idiots while calling the cops.

  • I wouldn't use any violence unless I have no other choice and then only enough to get them to stop attacking, and that's how I think most people are or at least how they should be.

  • Cool to see you gots a beared now.

welcome to teh vikings wit beareds club :D

  • Being pushed the punch was justified. If they are knocked out, thats the risk of starting physical violence. It may be considered too much for this case, yet it works in the future, that person will behave better.

I am big, so I am accosted at times by groups of people attempting to rob me or push me around. I go all out to hurt the most aggressive in the group and when I come across the same group they do behave better.

  • I don't condone violence in general, but I do accept proportional self defence.

The last panel of that example IS out of proportion. As you said, everybody have an obligation to ensure that a person is not at risk, no matter how much you dislike them.

There are people I dislike so much, that mean so little to me, that even my shit is more precious to me than they are.

Yet if they were in distress (as in the example), I'd still feel obligated to ensure their safety.

  • Seems to me that a number of people will not respond to a comic as if it were real, and I think you would have more support finding real things to denounce. As for me I find no humor in the cartoon and it expresses no positive message (it that was even the point).

  • @LapisLong It is the message that the comic represents, not if it happened or not for real.

  • While I'm gay and HATE the word "fag", I completely agree with you. We're all still humans, homophobic or not.

  • I'm an atheist redditor and I agree its not Ok.

  • How I would have handled myself in the comic:

    1: First warning after confrontation.

2: Second warning after the shove.

3: Break the fuckers nose if he persists in shoving me.

3a: Call ambulance and leave the scene.

  • @warpedwiselegoman Addendum: I do think it was bullshit that people think that it was a reasonable reaction, fictional or not, because I know enough atheists to know that they'd be calling for justice if it was a Christian (or god help us all a Muslim..hehe,irony) that punched an atheist in the face and left them lying on the ground bleeding. I know that's what I'D be doing.

  • @warpedwiselegoman Good points

  • speaking as some who has knocked someone into a coma in the past-

(im not proud of that btw but it is still something i think about)

if a bully lays hands on me im stomping his ass into the ground. i dont care what their ideology is. people who think they can just push people around dont understand any other response.

the funny thing is, as far as i can recall every bully ive put in their place has changed their behavior and we became friends afterwards.

  • Who gives a fuck about optimal solution? Pushing me is physical assault, you do it to start a fight. When I put my fist down your throat, you don't get to whine.

  • Love is the Solution.

  • I've been in these situations before (not necessarily involving religious bigotry) and the best strategy is to ignore and exit - if the person continues to follow and harangue just keep ignoring their ignorance . . . but if you dare touch me, I will do everything in my power to make sure understand my sense of private space (I would not go for the head thought) - if successful I would then phone an ambulance and authorities - wouldn't want the little fuck to suffer too much.

  • r/atheism can be a fantastic page, but like most sites, it's certainly not without its own share of dumbasses. Just like on youtube, if someone puts forward some stupid idea here will be plenty who support it either seriously or for a laugh. I think most people that disagree with something they come across are just too lazy to comment.

  • this is why i stick to r/trees 99% of the time. the rest of reddit can be...disagreeable.

  • It is not acceptable to instigate violence.

If someone confronts you with physical agression it is reasonable to defend yourself.

  • @Hyperplaterine It really does depend on what the level of physical aggression and your options are.

I don't see the comic as defence, but rather an emotional overreaction, that was not measured to the situation presented.

  • Also..if it has more than 4 legs or 2 eyes: Kill it. Kill it with fire.

  • "Perceive the way of nature and no force of man can harm you. Do not meet a wave head on: avoid it. You do not have to stop force: it is easier to redirect it. Learn more ways to preserve rather than destroy. Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim. Maim rather than kill. For all life is precious nor can any be replaced." - Master Kan

  • I agree with you. A shove is not worth knocking someone out. A shove I may not respond too. If the fundy took a swing, that's different. But even then, no need to knock the guy out, and even if you do during the fight, unintentionally, at least call the paramedics. View point I don't think comes into it, religious, or atheist. You get in a fight, whatever. If you knock someone out, and leave them there, you'd better hope they don't die. Because if they do you are on the hook for murder.

  • If someone in that situation put their hands on me I would most definitely have the right to strike them. However, once the person is unconscious the situation changes, you are no longer in jeopardy. It is your responsibility to call an ambulance, as he may have a concussion, and give the police an account of events. If not for ethical reasons than at least just being smart. If that person regains consciousness and tells the police you assaulted them and have fled, you're screwed.

  • @notinmyname2050 I was going to type in a response, but this post mirrors my thoughts exactly.
