He "adds more letters" to American words because... well, he's not American, and he doesn't speak English, at least, not like we do/have learned to.

The Japanese language is very syllable-based, therefore, he pronounces "clam chowder" in very short, pronounced syllables, "ku-ra-mu cha-o-da." So when written using Japanese characters, there is no character for "lam" or "der" like in "clam chowder". So, of course, he wouldn't pronounce it the way you or I would.

also some words in Japanese are very similar to american english because they are recent words and they don't have words for them in Japanese...i think. don't quote me on that but i am studying Japanese

in japanese, you can't have a sound by itself like, "m" "r" "t" etc.

so if something ends with a "m", it has to be changed into either a "ma", "mi", "mu", "me", or "mo", depending on the situation.
