  • This is Guy Drake..He let Sheb Wooley record this song one time and he recorded one of Sheb Wooley's songs.Guy Drake was also on Johnny Carson Show.

  • i still have it on a 45

  • You can't find anything on him, because, his real name is Shelby Wooley. He sings under Sheb Wooley, Ben Colder and only 1 album under Guy Drake.

  • What ever happened to Guy Drake anyway?

Ive been trying to come up with info on him but, Havent really found anything.

  • A True Classic..In Song & Gentleman!!

  • @ThePunkPatriot You are so off on this one. I was 13 in 1969 when this came out and it wasn't the usual type of music I listened to , but the people I babysat for had this record, I thought it to be amusing at the time but really couldn't grasp it's true message till I grew up and paid a whole lot of taxes so others can sit on their asses and complain that we're not working hard enough or that we are selfish for wanting the full fruits of our labors. I am tired of the distain. for us workers.

  • Ok...

lets put our money where our mouth is...

Ending welfare for the poor will take a while to do,

So lets end CORPORATE WELFARE (welfare condensed and consolidated) - FIRST - then we can lead by example !!!

    what da y'all think ?

  • This was my Grand Father...and just reading some of the questions from earlier posts. He ( Guy Drake ) wrote this song and NO it was never banned. The song went "gold" and after it fizzled, he sold the copyright.

If he were still around, he would not believe how true this song STILL is.

  • all these years later & it's still true...

perhaps a new version should be written to include Obama's healthcare reform???

  • i want a welfare check, i'm sick of working. i want a caddie to drive to cash my gov. check. i want to tell everyone that they owe it to me. i want to be a big fat slob and make my children who i'm to lazy to support change the t.v. channel when i lose my remote. and keep having children when i don't work, with a women that never heard the term "lady" before. i want to attend church only when i'm there receiving money from god fearing people so i can spend it in nudy bars.

  • sounds like the american dream :)

  • Great song, so true.

  • lol my names drake porter

  • once upon a time in America if you didn't work you didn't eat

    And taxes were cheap.

Now you can lay on your ass

and be supported by the working class.

  • aint that the truth!!!

  • Very funny! Did you write that, or did someone else write it?

  • Hey retard, you tell me where anyone has the right to the rewards for my labor! Also, while you are at it, point out where I mentioned anything about race. The fact that you make such assumptions shows that it is YOU who is the ignorant bigot.

  • Hold on there, folks. Tis true and always has been, but never more than now.

  • LOL nogcatcher, thanks for slapping Mr kevinbailey and reason4yourself upside their heads with a dose of reality. HA HA HA

  • Fabulous!!!

  • He did too... Don't speak of things you don't know! This song had nothing to do with race..and the only thing that was not true was the "10 kids"..Grandpa only had 4!!

  • No Mr. Bailey...it is you who are clueless. By paying healthy able bodied people not to work, you get a welfare Cadillac mentality.

  • This song is SO TRUE!

  • Thanks for posting. It' great to hear this again !

  • If I remember correctly, this came out when Lyndon Johnson was president and he forbade it to be played anywhere near him. Bet the Obama sends out the bucks by the sack! Maybe even by the truckload!

  • Nixon was president in '70 when the song came out. Johnson may have been president when he wrote the song.

  • I thank my dad for bringing me home this 45 rpm on Royal American Records... He listened to WHN am NY country music. Since I was a kid 8years old I listened to pop..but I realized that this guy was great! Since then I got the album and the sheet music.. A great song and this is a great video... Don't forget the flip side "Keep off the grass!!

  • Thanks for sharing! I'm Guy Drake's grand-daughter.. Grandpa always found a window for humor, even in the wost situations..We miss him..

  • Is it true that his album with Welfare Cadillac was banned? I heard that rumor years ago. If so, I figure it was because there was too much truth in it!

  • CLASSIC.

  • is this a one hit wonder? got anymore by guy?
