If you have an understanding of Japanese Feudal culture you would understand that Ninja never made mass attacks. Ninja worked alone or in small groups in rapid hit and run missions. The reality of Ninja efforts is as accurate as their bouncing in the air and flying across vast courtyards.
Ninjas didn't run around in black suits and "hitteams" and "Assassins" are only half the part of the story. The friendly servant could be the shinobi ordered to guard or kill the man he/she serves. Or the sohei. Or the friendly samurai (All Shinobis were trained in traditional samurai tactics) Or the Ashigaru. Or the peasant..
Months of preperation were normal. Perhaps executed in hit in run. Or as it fits. Even "assassin" wasn'T the only job.
Didn't Steven Hayes contribute as an advisor and stunt double for Chamberlain? I think so... I also think he was the lone shinobi that sneaks in and commits sucide when he gets caught earlier in the series. I also think that Bujinkan students were playing ninja at the time?
@TSOAS2008 Yes they were. Supposedly the lone shinobi that commited suicide when he snuck into the castle and got caught was Hayes himself (at least for the sneaking parts). I just find it ironic and humurous that a bunch of guys from a supposedly "fake" ninja lineage created some of the best examples of shinobi on film. Shinobi No Mono had Hatsumi as an advisor to the first three Goemon series films. The rest of the movies were supposedly the stunt directors' works.
@mountaineerjdm the sneaky guy is Japanese and whats your point? Shinobi no moni is full of holes, and fake ninjutsu. But good film. Whats teh problem. I also like Sakura Killers, but thats not true either. No Hatsumi in that one.
This sort of mass ninja attack reminds me of the big ninja raid at the beginning of the children's film "The Magic Serpent." Antony, have you ever seen that one?
@TSOAS2008 Here's the Japanese title: 怪竜大決戦 Directed by Tetsuya Yamauchi.
As I said, it's a children's movie, so it becomes awfully silly after cool the commado-like castle raid in the opening. For instance, the hero fights a bunch of stereotypical black suited ninja in the forest and gets his head cut off by a flying boomerang shaped sword, but thanks to his own ninja magic, the hero survives decapitation, defeats the last of the enemy ninja and calmly puts his head back on!!
@TSOAS2008 Thanks Anthony, I was looking for this clip for a while. Shogun is classic and I took a strange sense of satification when I was little and Lord Toranaga found out about that traitor samurai. Thanks for posting
Shogun was very famous in Germany. This is the last chapter of the novel, which is much better than the series in TV. Because in the book you can read, that even in town, were the netherlands crew first comes to shore, Toranaga knows this place as his a town crowded with his best loyal ninja families.. who live and work there masked as fishermen - so even from the beginning, every step the "Anjinsan" did, was within the spies of Toranaga
Shogun is one of my favorite mini series. It is possible to get on dvd and well worth the price! Similar to The last Samurai, only longer and better:)
I remember this movie, I think most people have the image of the 1980s ninja in there head, this movie looked a lot closer to the shinobi of the past.

I quite liked ninja attack in the last samurai, their outfits were a bit funky and the crossbows seemed a little out of place but I enjoyed it
