My father-in-law, the first bassist for the NY Philharmonic, came to America with Toscanini to escape the fascists who wanted them dead. They worked together until Toscanini died. They loved and understood music and genius. They disdained lack of conscience, lack of talent and fools. Toscanini said "Men should be democrats in life and aristocrats in art." Toscanini died before he heard Corelli who my father-in-law saw as an aristocrat.
I disagree, that kind of thinking is too rigid and stifles musical expression. Any performer whether singer or instrumentalist must have the freedom to experiment with a composer's score. Sometimes performing something "as written" is called for but not all the time, of course not all experimentation is good but often it is.
Finally, all artistes must be allowed to show their skills, audiences want and look for that in a performance.
Callas - Corelli is worse than awful in this - but it pleases the donkeys in the
audience . Paganini used to imitate the braying of a donkey on the violin for this sort of audience
until they realized he was making a comment on their musical taste and had to take to his heels when they rose up in anger . Bad taste is bad taste whether in Parma or anywhere else. MR. Corelli would have been more at home on
Judging by the applause I'd say the audience must have been 99% donkeys!
Your "donkey" characterisation of the people who pay for and keep opera alive is reprehensible and arrogantly elitist, whether motivated by jealousy or a desire to appear like a an expert and superior critic I have no idea. However, I would guess your hubristic stance will neither influence nor win you many friends here.
@geoden - Undoubtedly the same crowd that thought the three tenors horror show was about singing- especially the overweight one who masqueraded as a waiter with his
white tablecloth , artists show their skills by singing correctly what is written - you might
hear Podles to understand singing as an art form -quite different from a 2nd. rate\tenor yowling into the night .
@dziady1 Judging by the comments here and the general opinion of real experts worldwide, your assessment is clearly erroneous! This is not exact science, it's a subjective matter and if the vast majority differ then you have to accept that your opinion carries no weight. We don't know what your credentials are, you might well be a lunatic!
Corelli is a very highly rated tenor, that is a fact; you are confused about the difference between fact and opinion.
@geoden as well you might be one -- - ever hear of the emperors new clothes
credentials mean nothing when discussing voices and artistry- there are people to this day who think Callas a great singer - I suppose so, whenever she wobbled on to the right note .
Corelli is highly valued by many people is a fact and also a fact many people find his
singing a bore and that is not just an opinion .I prefer to hear music sung the way
@dziady1 I could agree with you if someone with a lesser voice would try the same... but when you are in Parma and you go to see a performance with Corelli in his best years, wouldn't you be a bit disappointed if he sung a critic's version "come scritto"??? I would!
BEAUTIFUL AND SUBLIME PERFORMANCE AS ALWAYS, THE GREAT MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI! YOUR BEAUTIFUL AND POWERFUL VOICE, USADA MASTERFULLY. THE SUSTAINED diminuendo, THE HIGH NOTES AND THEY HELD WITH PERFECTION AND BEAUTY, NO, EVEN, EVEN WHO YOU EVEN, EXCEPT, Super. REFLECTS THAT APPLY TO THIS ARIA''. Also as an addendum, it reflected the manly good looks and poise of Grandmaster Corelli, who still has not been overcome, as his voice

too much exagerate...and absolutely no sense of measure...even if he can keep breath for 1000 seconds he should keep it 20 seconds if the right measure is 20...I really don't like corelli's cavaradossi. this is superficial singing...based on power and self-centered exhibition. this is EXHIBITIONISM. if you say this is BELCANTO then you have no idea of belcanto
@fabriou many times the great singers like lauri volpi gigli de stefano del monaco took liberties with the music espescially when they appeared live . and for the most part the public loved it . CORELLI STUDIED TOSCA FOR FOUR YEARS BEFORE HE TOOK ON THE ROLE AND I THINK HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THE CORRECT MEASURE BUT HE AND THE CONDUCTOR PROBABLY DECIDED TO DO IT THIS WAY.i do think it was a chance for him to show off a little bit .DESTEFANO,FILLIPESCHI,FLETA SANG IT IN SIMILAR FASHION
Il miglior Cavaradossi di sempre, e non solo di Corelli, ma in assoluto !!!! @ crociato99: è vero che i fortunati che allora c'erano si commuovono ancora a riascoltarlo: chiedi a Gigètt o a Mora...
@Cantormatis I AGREE WITH YOU .I THINK ITS BEAUTIFUL AND THE AUDIENCE IS VERY EXCITED BUT I CANT THINK OF A TIME WHEN THEY DONT APPLAUD.SOMETIMES THEY ARE IDIOTS.BUT NOT HERE . I THINK ITS WELL DESERVED . I CANT THINK OF ANYBODY OTHER THAN DESTEFANO THAT DOES SUCH A FANTASTIC JOB WITH THIS ARIA . ENJOY

Very sad that someone so incredibly gifted vocally would have such cheap and poor musical taste. Those endlessly held notes are all about effect and appealing to the lowest common denominator in an audience.
@troppofiato HE REALLY HAD THE NATURAL GIFT OF MEZZA VOCE &FILATURA AND HE DOES KIND OF SHOW IT OFF. LAURI VOLPI DID IT &DESTEFANO . FILLIPESCHI . PERHAPS NOT AS LONG .IM NOT SURE BUT IT COULD BE AN( OPPURE) IN THE MUSIC WHICH IS AN OPTION .BUT, I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR SAYING ABOUT POOR TASTE ALTHOUGH I THINK THIS IS PROBABLY DISCUSSED OR REHEARSED WITH THE CONDUCTOR AHEAD OF TIME.AND I HAVE TO ADMIT I AM ONE OF THOSE (LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATORS IN THE AUDIENCE ) THAT APPRECIATED IT . ENJOY
I saw him in Tosca about 12 x live one of his best roles the personification of the romantic revolutionary artist in voice and appearance his whole handling of the scene was powerfully acted and believable
actually although he is in splendidly self-indulgent voice here I heard better lucevans from him with some more restraint i think the famous diminuendo is great at that moment but not quite to the extent of this one he could do it and loved showing he could
Unbeatable version. I saw him life in several places, also in this part.Always sang his heart out. No other tenor had this ringing top, none looked better, and here you can see that he has finesse as well.

I've seen two people disliked this. Let's think they clicked the wrong button. I've heard the whole performance, the best Cavaradossi ever recorded.

It is about serving the music and not using it as a stalking horse to show the
audience you can hang on to a note and in the process ruin whatever the composer
had in mind .If Toscanini were the conductor Corelli would be out on his rear end
before he knew what hit him .
