Collies were once the most abandoned breed in the UK. I would not recommend them for most people. "You have to be a Collie person to own a Collie dog". They need a lot of attention and good walks - 2 & a half hours a day easily and then they will come home and want to play ball in the garden for another hour or 2. Most people can't handle that !!
I'm a border enthusiast and I would never get a dog like the ones in video. They aren't true BCs. They're barbie collies. Their coats are too long for proper work, their gait isn't right for work, and I'm guessing since they were bred to be "pretty" they don't have the same smarts and drive as working BC.
If I wanted a nice, fluffy, docile pet, I'd get a golden retriever. NOT a poofy black an white shell of a border.
I love this breed, to bad though they are now breeding them for show who can't herd a damn sheep just stand there and be ''pretty'' I own a pitbull x border collie cross and she lives to run run and run :)
continued....Although there are a few bad tendencies he has due to his time in the pen- he is just as fine a dog as they come. I hope that others with the time, energy and commitment for a border collie will consider adopting a homeless dog, instead of supporting the breeding of even more dogs in the world.
My BC is a rescue- My Little Goat Boy. He apparently was too much for the owner and they basically abandoned him in the back yard with a bunch of goats in a pen. He didn't get enough to eat so his growth was stunted. He was so weak when he was rescued that he couldn't even jump up onto a couch. He's now doing awesome at 2 yrs old, is a frisbee fanatic, and is in agility classes.
NEVER buy a border collie from a SHOW breeder. These people are destroying a great working breed. It is outrageous that someone breeding for appearances can talk about the intelligence of the breed -- put there and kept there by WORKING BREEDERS who never, ever breed for anything other than working ability and health.
@Ookaminokemono my border collie is good he lets me know know when someones near the house. These dogs are not for everyone they are so intelligent and it comes with a price. They need lots of exercise. just walks aren't good enough.
I absolutely ADORE Border Collies....I have a 10 year old female and her name is Peggy Sue. She sings on command and does many other tricks. Very high energy dogs. A walk is not enough. They need to expend more energy. We came home one night and came in the house only to find Peggy Sue had herded all of our cats into the corner. HAHA.....
taking a person with energy is an understatement. love mine to death. a red BC who i think is trying to dye hr white patches with mud, daily. p.s throw out your alarm clocks and scheduals, your border collie will make sure you never miss any of them. like, to the second.
I have two Border Collies and absolutely love the breed. These are good looking dogs on the video but unfortunately are total barbie collies. Working stock BC's are good looking but rugged and do not have fur dragging on the ground and do NOT walk like the one's viewed in this clip.
hey i was just wondering the runts of the litter with BC's how do they pull threw? im getting one and its only 2 weeks old but half the size atm, will it come good or should i look at one of its siblings ??? its only to be a pet 4 love no comps or anything
What is you have to work from 7.00 till like 6.00. Do they also get lonely if you have another dog with de border collie? Or a cat? Can they be alone that long? Ofcourse besides work I would walk with him a lot.
i have a hot shot dog (one of Heidi's) and i just wanted to say that i wouldnt of picked a better breed, breeder, or dog. My dog is training for agility and were about to enter in some trials, but she is only 17 months yet so i cant wait...anyways, if your thinking about getting a border collie, and your close to heidi, talk to her, i know now me and heidi are best friends, and i love her dogs
Border collies are not that great pets, these are farm dogs.
They need to work herding something, be it you, your kids or the cat. Or the neighbor's cat. They're also bossy and they are used as guard dogs too, which means they'll bite your face off or the face of a friend who just casually strolls into your backyard.
DO NOT buy this dog as a pet. It's not huge, but it isn't a purse dog. And if you do buy, stay away from breeders and just get one from a farm.
I am thinking of a dog i live in a house with a yard and i love teaching dogs tricks. i love border collies because of their facial expressions and eyes. I have time to walk them every day and i would love to spend time with dogs and play with them would they be a good choice for me?
I have a border collie but he keeps on getting attacked by status dogs where I live. I can't let him off the lead so that he can run the field because some people think I should keep him on the lead. I feel that he is persecuted because he is a really friendly dog who just wants to play and run.
I'am getting mine in like, 1 months. can't wait. I'am an active person myself, but to run outside, I need a reason. there is already a yorkshire here, but I like rinning a lot, and they can't run long time. BC can though =D my ex has two, and I was able to take care of one when I was with her. I loved that a lot. running in woods or dirt road. can't wait =)
Awe - we had one of these ("Freckles" we called him or "Pepper" sometimes) but he succumed to heart failure when he was 10.
They are my very favorite dog. I've seen a lot of different breeds and had other sheep dogs - this is my favorite. So smart in ways I cannot take the time to mention here, and very very very loyal. Super obedient too! I could tell him to chase a dear and then tell him to stop and he'd stop and trot right back to my side just like a good herding dog!
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, BREEDING FOR SHOW CONSIDERS ONLY APPEARANCE, NOT REAL SOUND WHOLE DOGS. Conformation shows should only be for toy breeds whose only purpose is to look pretty. Breeding for shows DESTROYS working breeds!
@caseysuzi you underestimate the value of "showing" dogs. It's really not all about vanity. The appearance of the breed needs to be kept along certain lines, and shows are the easies way to manage that in anything but the tiniest populations. It's not that breeders breed any dog just for "showing off" at a show.
We were just saying "we think we're not smart enough for our dog" She's a little V-raptor when it comes to problem solving. LOL Aghhhh she can open doors! NOOO! :)
For my part I will continue to raise working collies to help maintain the integrity and tradition of the breed.
I encourage anyone who is considering getting a border collie to do their homework and really find out about the breed (I took a whole year before I got mine.) And please, if at all possible, give the dog a chance to work on sheep. That, and not agility, frisbee, or flyball (though all good) is what border collies are all about!
Such beautiful dogs! I would encourage the AKC to change the name though. There needs to be a differentiation between the show lines and the working lines. Most dogs I have seen from the show line have very little in common with real border collies in their "natural habitat." Aside from the subtle but very obvious differences in appearance and temperament, what I miss the most in the show line is that highly intelligent look, the "flame" in their eyes. Anyone who knows will know what I mean :)
When they say the AKC BC's are not "real" its because many of them have lost their "eye" for being intense working dogs. My BC pup is registered ABCA, not AKC, I and the ABCA believe border collies should not be held to one body type or look, and should be bred for their working ability. there are many different looks a border collie can have, so having one 'standard' I don't think is right for this breed..
I got a new puppy border collie a couple of weeks ago, please could you all look at my video because its my first video for youtube and I really want to see what people think of him! thanks alot and great video ( video called - 10 week old border collie by zaco281195 )
Border Collies can live in an apartment. An apartment is no different than a house. Either way, you need to get out and spend time with your dog. Putting it outside alone in the back yard is not good enough.
The dogs in the video are not real Border Collies. Border Collies are bred to do work, not prance around in a ring. Also, a good border collie should be more slender and athletic than the dogs in the video appear. The AKC is trying to ruin the breed.
I dont believe they are trying to ruin the breed just create a show version no they will not be able to work like the working version but this strain will be more of a family dog with high energy levels breed down to suit family suburban life, similar to the way they made american pit bulls a family dog, but in that case they where renamed the american staffordshire.
So in other words, you take out what makes a border collie a border collie. It's sad to see AKC doing this to a number of breeds. German Shepherds have deviated so far from their original structure/working ability that some litters are born with so much rear angulation they cannot even walk. The goal for breeding should be to IMPROVE the breed, not take away it's natural working ability in order to make a dog that is designed to be on display in a show ring.
What do you mean they are not "real" Border Collies??? They all go back to the same dogs that are behind the working line dogs. The AKC is not trying to ruin the breed...why would a breed registry go out of their way to ruin a breed? I have the #1 show Border Collie in Canada and he herds sheep. I also have a BC that is out of a multi herding trial line that can't herd sheep lol.
im thinkin bout gettin a boarder, but i dont wana let it down, my bro had a spanial im guessing there same in energy he ended up distroying the furniture he got rid of it. Ive a garden and field in back. I just wonder are they always in you face, is a walk a dog enough, my m8s dogs just watch tv all day there boxers and husky. Ill probably get mine from rescue so guessin no certifice or wht u said u film.
Border Collies like lots of activities and attention. I never had a problem with my BC and furniture. But he has toys and things to chew on in the house. Rascals has been good in the house but hates to be left alone for any length of time. Since I am retired I get to spend lots of time at home with him.
I think chewing behavior is a puppy trait that can be broken. Both my dogs chewed to some extent as puppies. Our 7 y.o. quickly stopped completely when she realized her actions displeased us. Just the looks on our faces was enough to stop her. Our boy puppy is taking a little more time to stop but his chewing behavior is almost gone now. If you adopt a grown dog, I think it will be more likely the dog won`t chew. Just ask about its behavior & keep lots of toys for it to play w/.
Our dogs are never in our face. They do like following us from room to room and being near us, but they certainly are not obnoxious. They are wonderful, loving dogs, but they aren`t lap dogs or couch potatoes. They like to play. Fortunately our house is big enough for them to run and play in so they can live indoors and get rid of energy too, but they like to play with family members. Just throwing them a toy is not enough. They need attention, I think.
Well you have to "play" with a dog a lot. Like a few hours a day. They cant play PC games you know :-D so they will get bored and eventually start biting stuff if they are bored. Of course there are breeds which are more calm and then they are more energy breeds and then there are border colies which are kinda hyper at times :-D
I have a registered BC and a BC mix the BC mix has seizures. It is hard to watch & the vet can`t do anything to cure them. She`s now 7 and the seizures get worse (not more frequent) with time. I`m really afraid the seizures will break her back bone and she will die. It is so hard to watch but she`s a wonderful, loyal, highly intelligent dog. She can just speak to you with her eyes they are so expressive.
I am sorry to hear about the seizures, but I am sure she enjoys the love and attention you give her. She can tell you care. Yes my BC has beautiful facial expressions and eyes that speak to me as well.
Thank you for the kind response. BC are very special dogs. My husband thinks a BC is the royalty of all dogs. All other dogs just don`t even come close in comparison in his eyes.
@paisleyyama My BC had seizures as well, i understand where your coming from and it takes a strong person to deal with it, and i'm sure something like that has made you a strong person.
@paisleyyama my BC had a seizure twice and supposedly if you feed it a spoonful of vanilla ice cream each night, the sugar reduces the likely hood for seizures. don't know if it will work for you, but you know, its worth a shot
Normally I do not think so, because they are so active and need lots of exercise. However, I do have a border collie and I do live in an apartment. He has been trained to be like a service dog. There are exceptions to everything. Thanks for asking.
I own 2 Border Collies in a appartment, I have no problem at all with it, but they do a lot of work, I train obedience with one and herding with the other, since you have time and patience to get the dog mentally and fisically tired I don't think the appartment is a problem, also because if you put a border collie in a garden without anything to do and he is not tired he will find a way to totally destroy the garden just for fun! My dogs are always very calm at home and it's not that big house!
We are sorry to hear that. Did you make a memorial video of her from pictures you may have taken? Perhaps in the near future you could get another one.
Love the video, I have a 4 year old B/W Border Collie calle Jake, he's a rescue dog and whilst not the brightest, he's such a loving and loyal pet, he's my best friend.
He's my third Collie and I'd never have any other breed.
God! I love dogs very much, I have 3 dogs living with me, a german shepard, a husky, and a dog i found in the streets, those guys are the greatest, and I want more, but I dont have the garden and the money to have more than three pups, but aaa I love them!!!!!!!!! Muaaa!!!
Congradulations, I think you will be sooo pleased. I love my border collie, he's my best friend. Start right away in teaching him some tricks!! Maybe we will get to see a video of you and him??

But Border Collies are no way apartment dogs right? Even if we walk them everyday?
DogsAreMyBestFriends 2 years ago 2
