Gotta say there's some good marines and some bad marines....my cousin just got out and he's one of the laziest, dumbest idiots in existance. Then there is his 60 year old dad who is a hard working farmer and served in the Corps during Vietnam. How ironic...
The Rangers are probably one of the worst Special Forces out there and the Marine Corps is definitely considered more Elite. The Rangers will take just about anyone, its the Army, that goes without say, why don't you stop bashing the Marine Corps because you are jealous.
i need somebody to talk to me about how boot camp is because i was planning on marines after high school i'm a junior now 16 years old and i have been starting to train on endurance for running and such and i want to know what else i should prepare for. ill be first in my family to be a marine and i really would like to show something of myself.
@SGTxBiRDMAN My son's in right now. He's in week 12 facing the Crucible. I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you what it's like. He'll graduate on 2/10/12. I'll ask him to respond when he gets home.

@sk8rgirl891 a reflection of marines in general...and what makes it worse is their claim at being elite, all the while having females within their ranks.
@1992airborne Female Marines kick more ass than you ever will. You're just mad because you don't have what it takes to become a Marine. Male and Female Marines have different standards and training, not because either is 'better', but because each have different jobs, but I'm sure you didn't know that.
If i remember correctly, they told us that our crucible was the first filmed on camera? They were waiting for us as we woke up for that first day, we were in our underwear!
Weapons count sucked....over and over and over again. I used to get so pissed and sore from holding my rifle up; I was in the little end, so I ended up holding my rifle up a lot longer than the big end.

the crucible was not as bad as i thought it would be. hell, i had firewatch for 2 of the nights, so i got the least amount of sleep out of everyone in my company. just ration your food right. the entire event is just different obstacles, so you just have to work as a team. and if you go to recruit training in the winter, then your gonna have it harder like i did. your carrying 90 pounds, 30 pounds more than the summer gear. but getting up top the reaper is worth all of it
@101vsh101 Really? That's good to hear.. I'm sure thinking about the crucible now with no training makes it sound harder then after you've done pretty much all of bootcamp. Hopefully I'll have it in the summer, also. Lol.
yeah, you work out less than what i thought you would at bootcamp. the primary thing is drill (marching). but you do have those tought pt days. but for a lot of people the reaper hike (only at san diego) was a huge shock, because it was all pretty easy up until that point. then you have that 10 mile hike which includes a 1,5 mile hump up a mountain. but never doubt yourself for making the decision to go, never think "what if i just stayed home"
@101vsh101 Yeah that's what I heard too in another video. But I don't know where I'd go, I live in Nebraska sadly.. so I don't know if that's considered Western or Eastern. Either way I'm pretty excited.. gone 12+ weeks to come back/see your family on graduation a "new" person in a sense. I can't wait to experience that feeling and when you first get your medal! I saw somewhere else most people say they won't tear up or cry when they receive it, but most usually do.
your west of the mississippi, so your going to mcrd san diego. and it's not a medal ;)
you receive a shooting badge. and as for the tearing up part, it's at the eagle globe and anchor ceremony, when you officially become a marine immediately after the crucible, i didn't tear up until the song "i'm proud to be a american" came on from the speakers, that's where most people broke.
@101vsh101 Oh! Haha, thanks for correcting me on that. But dang.. I hope I get to be able to be apart of all of that, sounds so great. I told my friends about me wanting to join the Marines and they go, "Marines? Marines pretty much means, "hey, I'm here, shoot me!" but they're definitely ill-informed. @MomGiveACare no problem mom. i mean crucible was tough to where you wake up around 3-4am and start you hike to your 1st station of exercise. itll take all day and i promise you the recruits will be in so much pain. we went through some water course and hike back to our camping area that was at least 2 miles away and it was dark and cold. my platoon didnt get hurt to where they had to be leave training so im sure your son will do fine. just 3 weeks away and youll see him again
@Codekidd man we saw those fucking signs every where during "field week". when i went through that shit in 2000, DI's wore soft covers during the crucible
@iAREanthonyyy a lot of crap you don't need lol We went through the whole crucible and the only thing we took out were MRE's the rest was just to make the pack heavy
i was the 32nd platoon to go through and it rained the whole time. we had to carry all our gear soaking wet. i remember it being alot harder than this...
@mrkush804 when did you enlist? I'm reenlisting from Army infantry to Marine infantry. how long did it take you from the time you enlisted to your ship date?
@FrankDeSonia11B Well, Im starting my senior year in HS on the 7th. I am enlisted, I swore in June 1st. So right now I'm just in the DEP. My ship date (6/20/2011) is like 2 days after my graduation, so if your looking for an estimate of when you may be going I'm not sure that would be an accurate comparison. However my friend signed up last month and hes going in February
@mrkush804 HEY BRO ....THANX FOR ENLISTING...ITS GOOD TO SEE MORE MARINES "ENLIST" RATHER THAN BECOME COMMISSIONED LOL...LET ME KNOW IF YOU GOT ANY QUESTIONS...I'LL TRY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS TO MAKE BOOTCAMP "EASIER" PEACE OUT AND SEMPER FI!!!
i remember that building in the background...... the "million dollar head", on the other side of that hill is the air station and i think 3rd laad bn and mass 3 around near there as well
@Virkds, I went to the island, i underwent the Crucible the same way, only difference was I had another DI than my kill, heavy or senior hat. I didn't know him, I was Hotel, he was another company. He no shit treated us fairly, obviously if we fucked up or didn't do something to the best of our abilities then yes he fucked with us but it was insanely rare. I only member him telling us to get back once and that wasn't even to our fire team but another for not saying "aye, sir"
You think that now. Just wait till you land on the yellow footprints. Its all down hill from there. Just keep your eyes open, ears up, and your mouth shut. Make sure you help out your guys and take care of your feet and don't go to medical.
I was in from 96 to 04 I have a question to any other Marine. Did anyone notice on your own Crucible that your drill instuctor packs seemed "light" Like they had it stuffed with the very basics and the rest was of it was filler like newspaper or garbage bags. I compared my pack and other recruits packs to the drill instuctors and theirs seemed like it weighed ALOT less than mine. Does any other fresh or Salty Marines remember this?
Also the recruits are still wearing the fire team logos on their Kevlar. Those are removed for the Crucible. Road guard vests are also removed. This looks like its the upper shelf which is the opposite side of where you set up your bivouac for the Crucible. And you don't go on this side for the Reaper.
This isn't The Crucible. It is a phase 2 hike, probably the 8 mile hike since they have the small break. The easiest way to tell this isn't the crucible is that the drill instructors are wearing their campaign cover. During the Crucible drill instructors were an 8 point cover. Another easy way to tell this is during phase 2 is that the recruits are having to sound off knowledge, meaning they are before t-55 (prac day) Drill instructors are more laid back during the Crucible, but still firm.
@runnerboy4life09 I noticed the same to but ive heard that the whole training sched has changed. I grad in 96 feb22nd. My crucible was at the very end and we recieved our Eagle Globe and Anchor on top of "MT. Mother Fucker" a VERY steep hill about a half mile long. Now I heard from my friends son who graduated in 08. His crucible was two months into training and not just days before the formal graduation where they officialy recieve their Eagle Globe and Anchor. Its changed so much.
@batterygrunt Well, in that case they have changed it back. There was a time when the crucible was at the end of second phase. As I graduated summer of 09 I can say that now the crucible is at the end with Eagle Globe and Anchor ceremony immediately following. There is still a week left after that before graduation.
@babbsiscool I just hope I read the sched wrong... Since you were out in 09 I remeber the same. I earned my Eagle Globe and Anchor the last week. This sons kid said his crucible was all F'd up. It was in the middle??? Im glad to hear you Grad like I did, and the Marines like I knew before the 1st Gulf war. I hope BOOT never changes. Hey... Did you get beat up by the Drill Inst??? I saw a lot worse given to the shit birds. I didnt care ITS THE CORPS!!! Semper FI!!!
@chadhertz it surprised me to say the least. I did however have a diferent DI than one of my platoons original and he talked to us like a regular person between events. I had a few fellow recruits from my platoon tell me our kill hats and heavy talked to them regularly too. obviously there was still an immence amount of discipline throughout the long haul but it was non the less more straight edge and helpful.
At the beginning they are doing weapons count, to make sure everyone is accounted for. Then they proceed with the crucible the final test to make sure everyone is ready to be an actual marine. and i haven't been to Paris Island, but I hafta say Camp Pendleton does have so many hills haha. Does Paris Island even have a Reaper hike? Not mouthing im seriously asking. BTW just got done with crucible two weeks ago.
@rockstarwannabe87 Your a BOOT? Semper FI..Devil Pup. Just messin. I was in from 96 to 04. I hear the Island has jiggers but here we have hills. ( I got in from Chicago) The Mt's are there u can see it right out of the chow hall. I guess the Island makes their boot sound harder. Either which way a Hollywood Marine to a Paris Marine, Dark Marine or Lite... When the rounds where flyin I didnt care if a W/M pulled me out. every one pisses themselves.
paris island is flat but has a few hills not many and yes camp pendleton has a shit load of hills im sittin in oceanside ride now on camp pendleton base
@TURKEYTALKER09 your damn right it has hills. Its acutally a part of the Rocky Mountains. If anyone says Camp Pendlton has litte hills You havent been there. If you have you didnt look out side the fukn chow hall. So your your right TURKEYTALKER09.... I wouldn really call it hills I remember Mountains unless the landscape changed since when I got in at 96????????????
>:(. They are not soldiers they are recruits trying to become Marines. These recruits are doing the crucible which is basically a test to determine who is strong, who works as a team and can face a defining moment. so to speak.
If your talking about 0811, I was probably not with any of your friends. Because I went to Iraq in 2003 and 2006. Remember I had two MOS's. So, just tell me what you meant
Im confused by a few things. Im 16 and my future is with the marines. Ive always wanted it. I live in missouri and im goin to san diego. Many people have said that parris island is harder than san diego. but i thought you trained as hard anywhere you go and you still earn the same title. I mean i know ur a marine eather way, but is it true that PI is harder?
Parris Island is a lot more flatter than Edson Range. Edson Range was brutal when it came to the Crucible. I just graduated last Friday from Echo Company Platoon 2108. That's one week I won't forget.
I had a B Billet, so I hada a primary MOS, then a secondary MOS. Mr Primary was 0811, Artillery Canonerr, then my seconday was 8411. Recruiting. I served 8 years in the corps
Parris Island and San Diegos training are identical, both intense. And your going to learn everything a guy would learn at Parris Island. The only difference is the terrain, at San Diego your going hike 12 something miles I think. Then you get climb a hill called the Grim Reaper which has a hill as steep as like 85 degrees
@BackerHall62 no they dont hit you, they dont allow it anymore, even when i was alone with a DI i didnt get hit, i was just yelled at then he IT`d the fuck outta me,not to mention if you screw up really bad, you and your platoon will pay for it and thus making everyone hate you for your mess up.But its all just a mental battle. i know my facts dude i graduated boot in early 2009 now im in the fleet
God i remember this shit like it was yesterday...lol 4 months left till im out, still gives me the shivers hahahaha DI's r no joke

@mrkush804 when did you enlist? I'm reenlisting from Army infantry to Marine infantry. how long did it take you from the time you enlisted to your ship date?
FrankDeSonia11B 1 year ago

Does any other fresh or Salty Marines remember this?
batterygrunt 1 year ago
Also the recruits are still wearing the fire team logos on their Kevlar. Those are removed for the Crucible. Road guard vests are also removed. This looks like its the upper shelf which is the opposite side of where you set up your bivouac for the Crucible. And you don't go on this side for the Reaper.
runnerboy4life09 1 year ago
This isn't The Crucible. It is a phase 2 hike, probably the 8 mile hike since they have the small break. The easiest way to tell this isn't the crucible is that the drill instructors are wearing their campaign cover. During the Crucible drill instructors were an 8 point cover. Another easy way to tell this is during phase 2 is that the recruits are having to sound off knowledge, meaning they are before t-55 (prac day) Drill instructors are more laid back during the Crucible, but still firm.
runnerboy4life09 1 year ago
@runnerboy4life09 I noticed the same to but ive heard that the whole training sched has changed. I grad in 96 feb22nd. My crucible was at the very end and we recieved our Eagle Globe and Anchor on top of "MT. Mother Fucker" a VERY steep hill about a half mile long. Now I heard from my friends son who graduated in 08. His crucible was two months into training and not just days before the formal graduation where they officialy recieve their Eagle Globe and Anchor. Its changed so much.
batterygrunt 1 year ago
@batterygrunt Well, in that case they have changed it back. There was a time when the crucible was at the end of second phase. As I graduated summer of 09 I can say that now the crucible is at the end with Eagle Globe and Anchor ceremony immediately following. There is still a week left after that before graduation.
babbsiscool 1 year ago
@babbsiscool I just hope I read the sched wrong... Since you were out in 09 I remeber the same. I earned my Eagle Globe and Anchor the last week. This sons kid said his crucible was all F'd up. It was in the middle??? Im glad to hear you Grad like I did, and the Marines like I knew before the 1st Gulf war. I hope BOOT never changes. Hey... Did you get beat up by the Drill Inst??? I saw a lot worse given to the shit birds. I didnt care ITS THE CORPS!!! Semper FI!!!
batterygrunt 1 year ago
@chadhertz it surprised me to say the least. I did however have a diferent DI than one of my platoons original and he talked to us like a regular person between events. I had a few fellow recruits from my platoon tell me our kill hats and heavy talked to them regularly too. obviously there was still an immence amount of discipline throughout the long haul but it was non the less more straight edge and helpful.
middleman017 1 year ago
At the beginning they are doing weapons count, to make sure everyone is accounted for. Then they proceed with the crucible the final test to make sure everyone is ready to be an actual marine. and i haven't been to Paris Island, but I hafta say Camp Pendleton does have so many hills haha. Does Paris Island even have a Reaper hike? Not mouthing im seriously asking. BTW just got done with crucible two weeks ago.
rockstarwannabe87 1 year ago
@rockstarwannabe87 Your a BOOT? Semper FI..Devil Pup. Just messin. I was in from 96 to 04. I hear the Island has jiggers but here we have hills. ( I got in from Chicago) The Mt's are there u can see it right out of the chow hall. I guess the Island makes their boot sound harder. Either which way a Hollywood Marine to a Paris Marine, Dark Marine or Lite... When the rounds where flyin I didnt care if a W/M pulled me out. every one pisses themselves.

I'm a sivy who is looking into joining the ADF: Could some one please tell me the specifics on what these soldiers are doing?
greadion4 2 years ago
>:(. They are not soldiers they are recruits trying to become Marines. These recruits are doing the crucible which is basically a test to determine who is strong, who works as a team and can face a defining moment. so to speak.
ryecheese999 2 years ago
Thanks, but what I am trying to ask is what were these recruits doing specificly at the time that this footage was taken.
greadion4 2 years ago
If your talking about 0811, I was probably not with any of your friends. Because I went to Iraq in 2003 and 2006. Remember I had two MOS's. So, just tell me what you meant
ryecheese999 2 years ago
Im confused by a few things. Im 16 and my future is with the marines. Ive always wanted it. I live in missouri and im goin to san diego. Many people have said that parris island is harder than san diego. but i thought you trained as hard anywhere you go and you still earn the same title. I mean i know ur a marine eather way, but is it true that PI is harder?
BackerHall62 2 years ago
Parris Island is a lot more flatter than Edson Range. Edson Range was brutal when it came to the Crucible. I just graduated last Friday from Echo Company Platoon 2108. That's one week I won't forget.

the Crucible in San Diego only has really steep hills and uber edges
I think Parris Island is more flat
yoonvsaechao 2 years ago
Parris Island and San Diegos training are identical, both intense. And your going to learn everything a guy would learn at Parris Island. The only difference is the terrain, at San Diego your going hike 12 something miles I think. Then you get climb a hill called the Grim Reaper which has a hill as steep as like 85 degrees
ryecheese999 2 years ago
damn. sounds badass
BackerHall62 2 years ago
@USMCFUCKYEA are they even allowed to cuss and swear and hit the recruits any more?
BackerHall62 2 years ago
@BackerHall62 no they dont hit you, they dont allow it anymore, even when i was alone with a DI i didnt get hit, i was just yelled at then he IT`d the fuck outta me,not to mention if you screw up really bad, you and your platoon will pay for it and thus making everyone hate you for your mess up.But its all just a mental battle. i know my facts dude i graduated boot in early 2009 now im in the fleet
