Their mission wasnt to do anything but drop troops off and give them support in terms of an eye in the sky. The germans got pelted with anti-air because they were dropping bombs. The Americans used black hawkes because their troops were getting shot at first. We retaliated with anti-air and the Americans retaliated with air supremacy.

The Somalis were defending themselves on their own home turf. It's too late to play the victim card if you're thousands of miles away from your homeland and meddling in other peoples' internal affairs.

Before the black hawk incident, helicopters were used to assassinate Aidid but instead of killing him, they killed clan elders who wanted to get Aidid to comply with the Americans. I guess they thought they can just hunt him down like the way they hunted down Manuel Noriega.

I think China got it much better. They send in a team of skilled workers and partner them with local civilians and this way they transfer knowledge to them. They come and build roads, hospitals and avoid giving money directly to these corrupt African governments.

In case of Somalia, the southern regions of that country has rich soil that can provide the consumption requirements for all the Somalis. Two things get in the way though...one is the warlords who want to extort the farmers and the second part is the large amount of free food entering the country. Middlemen horde those free food and put them on the market. The local farmer is the real loser in all of this and you see them joining the swelling ranks of people relying food aid.
