Ry is, if nothing else, unique in his music style. I've heard a lot of music in 60 years, and some a little like Cooder, but nothing absolutely like his. It's not about good or bad, it's really about what you like. The man is a genius in music especially when you take in all the movie sound tracks he's done plus his world wide involvement in music around the globe. And it all has his signature sound.
@Gonko100 Just how does it suck?? Groove too solid? Too much of that there syncopation for your ears? Additive rhythms confusing you? Can't relate to the trope they are signifying on? C'mon, tell me, HOW does it "suck", and what would you do to make it not "suck"? As you so succinctly put it?
@Gonko100 well go back and listen to Kylie Minogue and feast on McDonalds gourmet....you obviously dont even a have an inkling of soul or appreciation of real music
I am getting deeper into Ry's music everyday, after listening and falling in love with "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live" and "Vigilante Man" and also the BVSC album, I have to say that I feel so good now that I discovered this song, It's unbelievable how talented Ry Cooder is ,It's such a big inspiration for life! Music with soul !
@rebrush - who cares what Rolling Stone says? Or any other silly "Mass" survey? You cannot rank these talented people against each other. They ranked Kurt Cobain way up on the list above many true guitar masters. I mean, I loved Kurt, but come ON.....
@rocktenniscat bop til you drop is musically OK...but destroyed by being early digital recording that sounds like brittle glass with no harmonic warmth and this aint no audiophile bullshit
Thanks for posting and supporting this genuine, creative, pure artist. There is everything in here: skills and modesty, depth and fun, good music and entertainment, white roots and black roots, and even - let me say - social commitment.
@svacan Not believing my eyes,....NO ONE alive feels like that, what you said, but me. Don't know You, but I Like You! IF we had more committed artists like this, these days,.......the world would be a better place, bands would tour again, and kids wouldn't be killing each other over a sack of weed. ...LIKE IT WAS BACK IN THE 70's, and 80's. You ROCK.
Back in "88, I saw Ry Cooder do a live outdoor concert in Stockholm- he had Flaco Jimenez and the amazing black guys chorus. The Swedes were hoppin' and boppin'. One of the best shows I ever saw.
And that "undeserved windfall" would be what? Cooder has been playing blues for a bunch of years and millions of people have recognized his talent and innovation, so what is it that you find so distasteful about him? FWIW, I don't like some of his stuff, but whether you like his style or not, he's a damn talented musician.
@gripguy41 he's well rehearsed and has a bit of a flair but if you play guitar all day everyday, you achieve a certain proficiency.I don't find anything distasteful about the guy (no idea how you read that in)....he plays as well as any local muso that knows some tricks and licks.Personally I think "Tamp it up Slowly" was his finest moment, but I know someone who does it better even if it's a derivitive version of a railroad chant
This is the essence of musical expression. The drummer is a friend of mine and one of the best drummers I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. This is classic. Everybody one on the same page. God bless music for it's ability to free us all!

@rwwelch56 j think you are right,he is among the best guitarists who ever lived(specially slide) but unlucky me i dont think he comes to sweden,j had to see him when j go to usa
The opening of this is soo magical -he manages to transend the two generations of father to son, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. I love how all the musicians look as though their genuinly enjoying themselves, with their quirky dances and smiles beaming from their faces! fantastic stuff!

I used to have a German EP with four (or six?) live tunes, circa mid-80s, that had great version of "Jesus on the Mainline" and KILLER version of "Look at Granny Run." Sadly, I lost it (and all my vinyl) when I lost my storage unit. If any Cooder fan ever finds this bit of vinyl, grab it at any price; you won't be disappointed!

One of my favourite vinyl Albums of all (still in pristine condition) is Ry Cooder - Bop Till You Drop - it has this song on it and the rest are all just as brilliant.
Hey mate I just checked out your favourites and I see you are a Little Feat fan it's just prompted me to dig out my old 'Waiting for Columbus' album. They were a great band - they didn't really get the recognition over here in Australia they deserved.
Just back from his Edinburgh gig. Was expecting it to be watered down dad-rock. Turns out his voice, which has sounded a bit underwhelming on recent releases, is even better than it was in the 70s. Brilliant performer, and it's a crime that this concert film hasn't been released on DVD.
I know you have many vidz of Ry but have you any memories of his gigs in Europe? I know he played with the Buena Vista tour, did you get to see this or any others. I once tried to shake hands with him at the Apollo in Manchester, he merely put his hands together and bowed , lesson being, never try to shake hands with a guitarist, they don't know how strong your grip is! Take care
Ry doesn't seem to tour so much these days, I know David Lindley has stopped overseas touring except perhaps with Jackson Brown, all the good ones are becoming stay at homes. I know Ry Cooder has a new double album to promote and there is a DVD that has been released perhaps he'll come to Australia for a short tour.Keep wishing.
First saw Ry in the '80s and many times since, he NEVER disappoints, the ultimate professional and a true master of his instrument, others rely on tricks and distortion with Ry you get the real deal. Booked to see him with Nick Lowe and Flaco in Gateshead next month, I can hardly wait
First concert in my life I was 8 or 9 years old it was in Marseille 1979 or 80. It's a pleasure to see this again ... particulary this one !!!!! Long live to good music
I think the Rolling Stones did in fact burn Ry and it made him bitter, but he overcame it and moved on. Warren Haynes plays a good slide too, as did Brian Jones. Ry's studio version of this song is absolute killer.
Deepest thanks to Mikkel for posting all these songs from this tour of such talented and genuine musicians...And thanks to Ry for making it all happen!
Fantastic!! Had this on video from way back when C4 showed the whole film in the UK one night. Lent the tape out and never got it back :-( thanks so much for posting.
I've known Ry for quit a while now. This song has such groove... always have to play it loud! It digs deep into my soul and it makes me feel really good... play on Ry...!
Eb6/C minor - guitar is initially in open D tuning. ry raises string 2(A) to B you'd call this tuning D6/B minor. he then capos at 1st fret which gives you Eb6/C minor. i'm calling it C minor cause he's definitely working off C- as opposed to Ebmaj ... once you get guitar tuned correctly all the stuff he's playing falls right off the neck - unfortunately that doesn't address his right hand! huge part of ry's style. gotta' play alot of blake, spence, etc etc to get a handle on that aspect ...
I've been listening to this since the very beginning... 1979... I tell my Ukrainian wife Katya, it's why I'm still here 17 years later ;-) God bless Ry... Kickin' BOOTY!
fuck all men who don't like this.............your so stupid.

When we were looking for the CD the store manager said it was sold out. I literally found it on my knees in a dusty stack.
If you need a copy I can burn a DVD for Bop Til You Drop and send it.
