  • Some people legitimately think this was his speech lmao, its a film...

  • It is so sad that everything that he says is the opposite of what the men in power actually do

  • Whoa! I didn't know he could talk!! I always thought that he never learned how! This should be on NBC's "The More You Know" campaign!

  • Im with that.

  • That's not rare at all! that's from the movie 'the great dictator'' an incredible movie that everyone should see.-

  • beautiful

  • all I can say is WOW!!

  • "Since the end of the last world war, I have been the object of lies and propaganda by powerful reactionary groups who, by their influence and by the aid of America's yellow press, have created an unhealthy atmosphere in which liberal-minded individuals can be singled out and persecuted. Under these conditions I find it virtually impossible to continue my motion-picture work, and I have therefore given up my residence in the United States."

    1953

Returned to receive an Honorary Oscar in 1972.

  • occupy space

  • If the hairs on the back of your necks dont stand up when listening to this clip..you are sheep, stuck in your everyday struggles to obtain those bonuses,raises,RVSPs...Wake up..Unite!! and OCCUPY what is ours

  • Amazing.

  • A timeless speech and very true. World leaders and mainstream media today are focused on creating division, conflict and fear to control the masses and create more hate.

  • Ron Paul is too conservative to have in the tags for a Charlie Chaplin video, really. Charlie Chaplin was for the unions, not for privatization of everything.

  • This isn't rare, but youtubers appropriately titling their videos is...

  • @DanielBustillos The ideals displayed are quite rare in these times though...

  • tags include ron paul, elections, and the motto of the marine corp?! as a kangaroo once said Wtf mates.

oh and Charlie Chaplin is a wonderful linguist.

  • superb

  • This is far from rare, but still a fantastic speech from his movie 'The Great Dictator'

  • not "rare" when its on youtube

  • Another great quote from my all time favorite actor. RIP Charlie.

  • man oh man,.... this is simply beautiful!!

  • This...THIS...is why fate invented the internet.

  • Made*

  • Charlie make that moustache Kewl. Hitler ruined it forever more.

  • :**( I can't watch....

  • fantastic! ...was this from a movie? or just a speech he did? where when why was this?

  • Everybody should post this onto their social networks

  • granta80 clearly does not even have basic knowledge of the political spectrum. Nazism is as far right as it gets. To call it leftist is foolish.

  • All those arguing over left and right , act like they didn't hear a word he said .

  • @DAVPK1 ...believers are thus...

  • @DAVPK1 could be the tags, but yh I agree

  • @DAVPK1 genius comment.

  • There will always be15 o 16 sheeples o zombie that will never wont to wake up from their sleep even when knocked with a sledge hammer on the head.nice upload thanks alot we need it at this time.

  • WOW!

  • Great speech from a Silent man!

  • Amazing. As his characters in his films, I never gave Chaplin a voice. It is only now that I realise that Chaplin wasn't merely a comedian, he was a great person with a share anger at what is truly disgusting about this world.

  • Who dislikes this?

  • "Universal brotherhood." Thanks for posting. You ROCK.

  • What a man !!!!! This is one of the most beautifull speeches I have ever heard bringing truth to the people. Amen Charlie and Bravo !!!!!

  • That, was quite a speech. Fitting even today

  • Sounds like he's talking to Republicans.

  • @jlsr1000 look at which party had the first black political figure, look at which president freed the slaves, look at which party voted to end slavery and which party voted 93% to keep it (democrats). and by the way, nazis were far left on the political spectrum where total govt control is on the left and anarchy is on the right. yeah........chaplin is talking about having freedoms......because democrats go hand in hand with making us more free (SARCASM). by the way i didn't vote for Bush.

  • @granta80 erm... Nazism is a right wing ideology I think you'll find...

  • @skullandtrombone dont read wikipedia. its a far left spectrum ideology in terms of govt control and how its ruled. the far right is pure anarchy....which we all know is bad.............the far left is communism, totalitarianism, facism, socialism (nazis). Where we need to be is slightly to the right of the middle. middle being a "democracy"....and us falling under a "republic" which is the rule of law, where our elections are democractic. so yes i know what im talking about.

  • @skullandtrombone nazism controlled the utilities, instituted national unions, took away guns, stole from mannnnnnnnnny people. the list can go on and on......very left nazism is.

  • @granta80 as a student of history and sociology I would very strongly disagree with your opinion on where Nazism falls on the poltiical spectrum. Nazism was a form of fascism and nationalism thus falls on the far right authoritarian, not the left. Simply having a totalitarian governtment doesn't make it a leftist ideology.

  • Seems as though he had seen the future back then talking abt giving up machines for kindness and love.

  • A good speech, but it's far from rare. It's the ending to his 1941 film "The Great Dictator"....a movie that has been seen by millions over the years, and can be bought on dvd today. Also, Chaplin spoke during the whole film. Hell he spoke in many of his later endeavors. Great clip . Misleading title.....

  • <3

  • more than a hero of film, a HERO of the human race. My hero.

  • Listen to Two Steps from Hell - Moving Mountains while watching this.

  • This is a beautiful speech- what would he have thought, if he knew that his speech was being watched on a computer, on youtube, but hundreds of people? Makes you think, I guess.

  • What a beautiful speech.... The only shameful thing being.... It's still relevant today.

  • If there was an oscar for monologues or speeches he would have nailed it!

  • Why do you call this a "rare" clip? It's from "The Great Dictator," one of his most famous films. As an actor and director, he made no less than five "talkies."

  • This speech gives me chills every time. Beautiful.

RIP Mr.Chaplin, you are sorely missed.

  • chills down my spine ...

  • wow!

  • This speech gets more and more poignant every time i listen to it.

  • Very poignant and direct.

  • Very poignant and direct.

  • BRAVOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Charlie Chaplin for President! (okay a dead president might not work, but heh...the live ones would do well to catch his spirit!)

  • this is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Thanks for posting

  • WONDERFUL SIMPLY WONDERFUL AND SO TRUE SPEECH!! AND IT IS 2011 SEEMS SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE>>>>>>>>>

  • If I could fold this video up and put it in my pocket, I'd keep it with me forever. Absolutely, amazing.

  • It's not rare footage. It's a clip from the movie The Great Dictator directed by Charlie Chaplin who also starred in it. He had a great disdain for Hitler because Adolf's permanent disgrace of the pencil mustache.

  • WOW, truly an intelligent man with much insight. He is talking of things coming even more true in our time. We are watching AND taking part in these very things as they are unfolding before our eyes.

  • and his "reward" was the Tea Party / McCarthy-ist types in the US in the 50's drove him out of the country....

  • I wouldn't say "greed" has corrupted men, but fear. Such fear provokes men to earn so much money that they can control the future-- far more money than mere greed could ever require.

By the way, Hitler liked Charlie Chaplin.

  • Comment removed

  • great speech, but the "science and progress" part is iffy for me...the medical mafia uses "science and progress" to feed their greed.

  • @animlnitr8 the medical mafia aren't interested in science or progress, all they know is greed. they exploit science in order to make money and stifle progress in order to continue making money.

    capitalism has corrupted them.

  • @animlnitr8

With out science, progress and western civilization you would not have been able to post that comment just now.

  • good speech, but is he not asking for a utopia where the majority would vote for everyone's benefit including the minority? it cannot happen as he said people are greedy, there can be no democracy just as there cannot be a dictatorship.

  • Amazing stuff this. Still as relevant today as it was back in 1940 when this was first shown during the dark days of WW2. The greatest denounceation of totalitarianism I've ever heard in a feature film. Chaplin should of certainly have got an Oscar for this. It brings me almost to tears when I see it. Chaplin should have done even more sound movies then he did, he had great voice as good as any of the other movie stars that were around at the time.

  • thank you for adding this, I put it all over, The White House facebook page, as well as hln and abc news. today.

    white wolf

  • Charlie Chaplin has a big head.

  • @zmts2 Got anything intelligent to say bone head?

  • @Professor6871 I made ing an observation about the anatomy of a historical figure. That's intelligent.

  • oh my god charlie is talking!

  • hey hey, anyone know where this was from and what it was for? i'm really interested yo!

  • haha, as soon as they got in Hollywood and the Fed,

    they said these words

    as they robbed you blind

  • damn Charlie got funky at 2:07 !!!!!!

  • @KickBack90sBeats oops... 2:05

  • @KickBack90sBeats Way to miss the point of the speech....

  • beautiful.

  • A great speech, practically poetry to me.

  • Yes indeed! We will destroy personal liberty and create democracy in our image. We will destroy the evils of Capitalism. Communism is the only way to equality and we will rule by default.

  • Fuck Chaplin - why not parodied Stalin

  • This is from his film "The Great Dictator" made in 1940. It was his first "talkie".

  • @hekesq One of his great films other than the Gold Rush made in 20s or City Lights. Such an important satire film on Hitler or any form totalitarianism, but mind you many criticised him at the time for not making the film much earlier before war had started. By 1940 events had overtaken the film's effectiveness. Most of continental Europe had already been overrun by Nazi Germany.

Chaplin's pa-roding of Hitler's mannerisms in this final scene from the film, is truly amazing.

  • Wonderful.

  • Why oh why has no one ever taken heed from these wise words, whether scripted or not, these words were brought together because that is what people feel.

  • Replay the last 15 seconds a few times.

  • @aebrownleeiv Why?

  • 8 foolish people and Sarah Palin didn't like this video.

  • @26095 its now 10.

  • wonderfulllll!!!!!

  • Interesting... Very interesting...

    -G

  • ,,EPIC!

  • when was this made?

  • 8 shortsighted Hitler fanatics are very disappointed.

  • What I wanna know is how in the HELL can 8 ppl hate this??? Charlie Chaplin once said that he wished that he hadn't made "The Great Dictator" as a comedy. I'd like to get this on DVD somewhere!!

  • Charlie Chaplin for President 2012!

  • This is an amazing speech. Truly before and holds true almost more today..

  • @InfamousPeter thats probably why they had to shut him up !!

  • @InfamousPeter

and these words have been said so many times, and for so long.... now we do have the internet, in Mr chaplins day not.... so what are we waiting for exactly??

  • Amazing!

  • Don't know much about Mr. Chaplin, but BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!

And it is very sad the way people treat one another on the Internet and in the so-called "Real World"! Its as if most people are nothing more than perpetual 5 year olds who can only throw tantrums when they don't get their way.

Sad, sad, sad! Sometimes I wonder why we even condsider ourselves to be "civilized".

  • @DemePoole I often feel embarrassed to be part of the human race when I read the the disgraceful comments on Youtube videos. I don't know anyone in my actual life who talks to others the way so many do on Youtube.

    Shameful.

  • @WolfgangHolzmann I agree. It is very embarrassing, indeed! I'm not angel, but I try my best to behave in a mature and civilized manner. Over the years I have learned to ignore people who choose to spew filth, because they feel "protected" by the false veil of "anonymity" that the Internet provides. Well, stupid is as stupid does.

  • @WolfgangHolzmann Oops! I meant, I'm NO angel! LoL! I remember my days on AOL battling it out against 3 or 4 idiots at once! Inevitably, somone always wanted to "meet up and fight". LoL! Really? Oh, those were the days! :-)

  • @DemePoole Oh, that's hilarious, and you just know that they're 90 pound weaklings.

Love the Forest Gump qoute by the way.

  • @DemePoole he was a very famous actor when film theaters first opened up. very funny actor. in this film as u can tell by the moustache he was supposed to imitate adolf.

  • What almost kills this amazing speech is that he looks like hitler. Or is it that Hitler looks like him. Great Speach

  • C.I.A. brings out the best in man eh....... I always thought he was a mute....

  • C.I.A. brings out the best in man eh.......

  • @bobbyuwood1 Are you serious?

  • @MetaCrawlerz *insert pac-man sound*

  • @MetaCrawlerz. *insert pac-man sound*

  • It's sad that after listening to this, that most peoples reactions in the comments have only horrible things against each other.

Power to the people, kindness isn't a weakness, most of what we hate in others is what we see in ourselfs.Joe Glasgow 33.

  • Al Gore is just as bad as Bush, he's into "carbon taxe's" We need Ron Paul.

  • Al Gore would've been president if he had used this speech! Down with the tyrant whose name is BUSH!

  • he makes a very good case to suck you in at the beginning, i would follow the first minute or two very contently, nearing the end he begins to preach about "us ALL" needing to fight though... wtf is that?

  • @Funguy42O Inaction is action. If you do not fight, then you are condemning the world to slavery by "brutes". If you do not fight, then you are rejecting your power, and are cattle. If you do not fight, THEN YOU WILL NOT WIN! IF YOU SIT THERE PLACID, THEN YOU WILL NOT BE FREE!

  • this is good

  • sweet speech... this is how you pull a Hitler though, he tells humanity to

fight greed... meaning fight greedy people / be prejudiced toward rich

people (Jews (at the time), bam, you've got yourself a 'Third Reich' army

  • @Funguy42O He does mention not discriminating between Jews and Gentiles... it's the mustache methinks.

  • @Funguy42O lol do you even have a clue what the fuck you're talking about hah?

  • Very nice speech but I think this is a fake video.

  • @francistansecoDOTcom

it is the movie great dictator 1940!

  • he speaks of kindness, love, beauty, freedom then he screams about LET'S FIGHT!.................

  • @Sqiwamjon Yeah, because there are evils in the world who don't readily give up such things like kindness, love, beauty, and freedom, without a fight.

  • @Sqiwamjon Fight against injustice mate. Sometimes the most kindly of folk have to stand up and fight bullies.

  • sounds like he was a socialist.

  • Michael Jordan bringing that stache back!

  • Also, this is not a "rare clip". This is the end of The Great Dictator a very accessible and famous film by Chaplin.

  • @jenlight I think it was not meaning that the clip was rare insomuch as the fact that Charlie Chaplin SPEAKING was rare. If you asked 90% of people today, they only would know about Charlie Chaplin through Johnny Depp's pantomime of him in Benny and Joon.

  • @JROXANN Wrong i knew chaplin was in silent movies that i never watched and i didn't even know johnny depp played him in a movie

  • @Gitsoe Interesting that you think you represent 90% of people today. Quite a marvel really.

  • I recommend seeing the entire movie.

  • to bad Hitler killed that moustache

  • Only if we had a leader today who could incite all people into believing this philosophy

  • The trans-atlantic accent makes this even deeper and more amazing.

  • Why the hell didn't he speak more? This was brilliant.

  • oi g0rbas check yaself :-P shame bout the de"mock"racy rant bit....would make a perfect communist speech....hummm an edit maybe....i would'nt dare mess with such genious....someone will though i guess hah!

  • commie.... :P

  • I think Robbin Williams uses this voice....

  • thumbs up if reddit sent you here, but you like devin townsend and thought it was funny that he was mentioned in the highest rated comments

  • Reddit sent me here.

  • So much respect for this man.

  • bad audio

  • Someone tell the crazy time travelling lady, to bring charlie to our current time.

  • At the time of viewing this great clip, I noticed there were 982 LIKES & 5 DISLIKES. I believe in democracy & freedom of thoughts. . . But why would anyone dislike this speech?!

  • @ANTHONYSHAMS

Because it's suicidal nonsense. The 'brotherhood of man' only exists in the minds of naive christlings and liberals.

  • @amafuji your a very bad person

  • Seventy years on. What's changed?

  • i heard hitler rocked that moustache because he was such a big charlie chaplain fan

  • @speakbraille where'd you hear that? I haven't heard that

  • deep guy!!! this is one of the most amazing speeches ever and to think it came from the most famous silent man!!!
