The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki. I have no idea where you got 49 million, but it was definitely way less than half a million at most... Hiroshima and Nagasaki were targeted because they were INDUSTRIAL cities with relatively low populations... And the bombs saved countless American as well as Japanese lives that would have been lost in a long, difficult invasion.
