If you want actual cost analysis on these cars you can look at a cost report. Teams are required to have them at competition, so there may be some available
Many teams run off little money. the cost of a cbr600 engine is $1200 +/- many other components also come from bikes(NC state uses the bike tranny). then raw materials and also carbon fiber, wheels, and time.
These cost alot less than f3 cars physically, but there is more time put into these since one is built every year with a new design.
@ballinlove How is that possible? a 2008 f3 chassis with spare front and rear wings, wheels, tires, suspension, and gearbox is worth $32,000, a toyota f3 engine is worth 20,000. keeping in mind that fsae cars regularly use motorcycle engines and are limited to close to 600cc. not the f3 limits this car should be a lot cheaper.
just like I wrote it depends...there is so much details that you have to look at ! You have to design everything by yourself. Our car is worth that much because of the electric engine...however you get surely contect one of these teams and ask them ( Formula Student) what is the price fitting you wishes;)
@123aellis Economies of scale. While the cost of materials for 1 FSAE car is probably lower than the cost of materials for a F3 or FBMW, only 1 FSAE design is ever built. If it took $500,000 of engineering work to develop a new FBMW car and 100 cars were made that would add $5,000 to the cost of each car. If only one car were made that car would have cost $500,000 just to design.
While they aren't paid for their work the man-hours of a bunch of engineering students are pretty valuable.
@x440Magnumx That's a great point - I guess it's best to say that the car is priceless... Similar to a current-era F1 car - Millions and millions go into development, making it next to impossible to put a realistic number on it as it isn't produced with sale in mind.
damn, impressive aero kit
