Ah...I meant GI Joe came out in 1982 (Real American Hero version). By 1984 when television was deregulated and they could tie in toys with cartoons, GI Joe was HUGE.
I remember I had all of these. Man, they were small...and it didn't take me long to lose their guns. One thing I didn't like about them is they were made of lead or something and were heavy. I took them to school one day and left them in my desk during lunch and when I came back someone stole all of them. Boy was I mad...I still have no idea who took them.
These were available at BI way for years!!! Io remember looking a tthem in the early 90's!!! They were only about two inches tall and the playsets were crap!! Shame MEGO Shame!!!!
I had almost all of these figures, plus the Captain Eagle Fortress! And then G.I. Joe came back out around '84 and I lost complete interest in the Captain Eagle line. Most of the Captain Eagle figures rusted because they were die-cast metal.
GI Joe came out in 84. This line was Mego's big gamble in the action figure market. Instead of staying in the scale that Kenner was doing with Star Wars, They took a chance on this line. It failed horribly and was canceled after a few short years. They couldn't compete with GI Joe figures that were a similar price, larger, and had better articulation. This was pretty much the nail in the coffin for Mego being a big name in toys.
I had a few of these back in the day, and didn't play with them much. The G.I. Joe figures were so much better, in every way.
