  • YOU LOOK A HECK OF A LOT LIKE THIS GIRL I'M FRIENDS WITH ON TUMBLR...But it's not you...Weird.

  • Thank you for having made this video. I'm working on a short answer essay for a college application supplement and I'm writing about Nerdfighteria as a community and you just helped me evade the evil spirits of writersblock. Thank You for increasing the levels of Awesome in my life. <3 DFTBA

  • I'm doing a senior project on online communities. After seeing this video early last year, I knew I wanted to look at communities. We as an online communtiy have seen how we can enact social change and have an impact on society. And I am now reading this book for my project. I just wanna say that I agree with everything that Paige said. Communities of Practice not only applies to Nerdfighteria, but to so many communities that we are all a part of. I suggest that everyone get their hand on a copy

  • my god you got fat. been eating too much bullshit i see

  • love the video, but i did not understand 80% of what you were talking about. I need to go back to college.

  • shes very cute.

  • I am in dire need of a nerdfighter shirt, electric blue fingernail polish, and a stuffed animal elephant. These I shall carry with me at all times.

That and my official certificate of awesome. :]

  • I have met so many nerdfighters recently just from the shirts. And they've all been such wonderful people. I like being a Nerdfighter. I think I've always been one, but without a community of practice I wasn't nearly so good at it. Thankyou Nerdfighteria.

  • Thanks for this! We were studying this at college today:-)

  • how can i be a better nerdfighter? i don't have money to donate or time to help charities. I'm camera shy so I can't do amazing blogs like this. help?

  • I've never heard an anthropologist talk with such enthusiasm about humans. I'd love to see you go really far in the community, and the world as a whole. Positivity and enthusiasm WILL make the world more awesome. Favourited, liked and subscribed!

  • I'm an anthropology major at UChicago, and I've concluded that anthro majors are the coolest people in the universe, yourself included. :)

  • My friend said she thought she saw a nerdfighter in town (OMG! My town is tiny, so that's amazing!) I mean, she might not have been, but she saw someone walking in town with a jacket saying "I pwn n00bs", which might be a nerdfighter reference- even if it isn't, it's cool to think so!

  • what is a nerd? O_O

  • really cool

  • Do you have any friends who are girls?

  • Anthropology yay! I'm in an intro to anthro class in college now & I love it as much as you (which is a lot).

  • Frankly, I think that my favourite thing about Nerdfighteria is that from a couple of guys vlogging, and being awesome enough to make a lot of friends by doing so, grew a thing that is wonderful enough and coherent enough that not only can it be defined as a real live community by anthropology, but that people are enthusiastic enough about it to do so, make videos doing so, and then put them on the internet.

  • I love defining community and so I love this video. I think you really open the idea of what community can be, and especially one like nerdfighteria that aims to be as inclusive as possible as opposed to other communities which can be very exclusive.

  • Best PAIGEFACE video ever. Also I need to see your face, go to dublin. <3

  • I really really really loved this video.

I was introduced into nerdfighteria mid-2007 by people who turned into decepticons, and I thought I didn't know any nerdfighters. But there are five nerdfighters in my drama class and a few in my school. :D

  • The other day I was sitting in the cafeteria at my college. I was just sitting and talking to my friends, and then I looked up, and the person walking past my table had a pizza john shirt on. Of course after that I went and talked to her... It was awesome :D

  • @olsonche13 perfection!

  • I'm a Viking Nerdfighter. =D

  • @thevikingguy do you have any viking powers?

  • @hopeonatenspeed I have the ability to clean my bedroom uber fast, as seen in my latest video... =D

I think I also have the Viking power of being slightly abnormal (But I wouldn't have it any other way! Haha!).

  • I love being a nerdfighter but I literally do not have any nerdfighters in my area I'm almost sure of it...it makes me so very sad.

  • thats a good idea, I am a nerdfighter wannabe though haha, you look so pretty by the way :)

  • @EmoPaintedRed if you want to be a nerdfighter...then you probably are a nerdfighter.

    thanks!

  • @hopeonatenspeed nah, tried being one, I still can't fit in xD

  • See, the thing about seeing people in relevant shirts is that I'm always afraid they got it at Goodwill or something, and have no idea what it actually is about...because the one time that happened, it would be me freaking out and making a fool of myself.

  • @erikandfox hahaha. you could still make a new friend. i'm constantly making a fool of myself to make new friends. it works pretty well.

  • Nerdfighteria sounds interesting. I'll be watching!

Thank you for taking the time to share!

    Blessings & Bubbles!

    ○º°˚º°'♥'˳.º˙*°*○ₒ.͙.º˙☆*°º˚*͙оₒ'♥'˳.ₒоʘoₒº˚*°º

  • I love that you've told me about this book and this theory. I am a part of an interdisciplinary program called New College that just had a retreat and talked so much about what we want to be and how involved we want people to be; it reminds me of Nerdfighteria. I'm definitely going to be looking for that book and bringing it to our next council meeting :)

  • I have a question- I've been a nerdfighter for a few months....but I'm not really a nerd. As in, I'm dumb. Can I still be a nerdfighter?

  • @milkyway531 there has to be something that you are nerdy for...and i'm sure you aren't as dumb as you think you are.

  • Now I'm thinking of taking an anthropology class because it sounds fun, is it anything like sociology?

  • @kriswish2000 Anthro is like, a mixture of sociology, psychology and a couple other things in that area.

"It has origins in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences" -Wikipedia

You should go for it, I've heard it's a really interesting class and I'd like to take it myself. :)

  • next time someone asks me what is a nerdfighter I'm sending them here. :)

  • sorry sorry i want 2 join nerd fighteria but can u send me the link 2 the website?

  • @SuperBonsoir nerdfighteria is the community of people surrounding john and hank/the vlogbrother's videos. all the links are in the description if you want to check them out. they are fantastic. you should.

  • :) <- this is me while watching this video

  • Aw I loved this video :)

  • I've been trying to be more involved in the nerdfighter community for the past year or so, staring off with last year's john day (but it was never included in the video because it was me singing happy birthday to john with some artwork I did as the visuals). I've found a lot of really good videos by nerdfighters and half of the people I'm subscribed to are nerdfighters. I did some commenting and donating during the 2010 p4a. What other things can I do to be more involved with the nerdfighters?

  • @lightanddarklove the thing about nerdfighteria is that it is really big and everyone wants the attention of john and hank...but they are busy boys. i'd say just make sure you have a good group of nerdfighter friends...do nerdfighterly things together...find ways to let the community know about them...and know that you are contributing to the community whether or not you get acknowledgment from someone for it.

  • @hopeonatenspeed the problem is I don't know any nerdfighters in my area. I would try to get some of my friends into the nerdfighter community but I'm probably the person among my friends who understand the capabilities of the internet most.

I think your pants has the possibility to connect nerdfighters a lot more, but we need to make a flash webpage with like a map of the world and every nerdfighter can give their twitter or youtube and first (and/or last) name so we can all find each other.

  • OK -- I disagree with you. Being a Potter fan is a requirement in the nerdfighter community.

  • @zengrenouille Also, are you working on your master's in cultural anthropology? How do you like that? Do you have any advice for those of us who will soon be going through the anthropology graduate school experience, ourselves?

  • @zengrenouille why? relatively little of what nerdfighteria does requires a knowledge and/or love for harry potter to participate.

  • This is fantastical and intellectual..... LOVE YOU

  • When you talk, you move half of your mouth more than the other half. I'm fairly certain it's your right half, but cameras sometimes do funny things to people and their sides.

  • @narfarfar hahah. an important thing for a person to know about herself.

  • ANTHROPOLOGY XDXDXD <3333

  • One of my best friends at uni is an anthropologist and I'm often more interested in her degree than my own. So more of this Paige, please and thank you :D

  • Do you watch Bones? If so how accurate is the stuff that Bones says about different cultures and stuff? I figure you would know since you said you're studying Anthropoloy.

  • @danflyer22 i don't watch bones. should i start?

  • what does your username mean?

  • @anniscalling hope on a ten speed. it is from a song by the roosevelts called ten speed. i liked it a lot when i was making my aim username forever ago...i still like it.

  • french the illama I love your face dearly and I want to be inside of your pants where I belong so that we can help each other out when get tiny chickens stuck in our heads and do happy dances together forever.

  • @emmfan09 let's do our happy dances and eat ice cream with celebrity friendcrushes and breakfast around the wooooorld.

  • i love your videos, but are you scripted?

  • i love your videos, but are you scripted?

  • @DaniCalifornia314 i read the quotes directly and i had an outline...

why would being scripted be a bad thing? most youtubers write out what they are going to talk about first.

  • @hopeonatenspeed it wouldn't be a bad thing, i'm impressed with how you're able to stay on topic, thats why i asked.

  • @DaniCalifornia314 coolcoolcool. hahaha. i did a lot of editing. i'm not as succinct naturally. hah.

  • This is fantastic.

And it reminds me to buy John's books. I guess I'll go sign up on the waiting list at the library. It will probably take a year to get one, but when I do, I'm gonna write a sticky note and add it onto the fun.

  • I love all the points you brought up in this video. Well, well done. =)

  • This video makes me smile, because you always smile, I don't think I've seen a video without you smiling all the time =)

  • @Geoshi hahah. there is one...but i purposefully didn't smile and it was really hard.

  • I really liked this video! I like how you focused on all the positive things in Nerdfighteria and not the negative mean things that I guess have arisen within the community!

I love nerdfighteria- Its a magical place, near Wonderland and across the street from Narnia- or at least I wish it was, because that would be awesome!!

Two glorious thumbs up for the video!!!

  • I'm getting my undergrad degree in anthropology! Also, this made me so happy to be a part of this great community

  • You remembered to be awesome while making this video :D

  • Specifically our inside jokes are "so jokes". Ahh, an inside joke that is no longer used!

Thanks for this Paige! I have yet to see a Pizza John shirt in real life, but I guess it's only a matter of time at this point. Maybe I should get one of my own? :P

  • Great video! So passionate and insightful. Statements like these give the community even more strength.

  • There are NO nerdfighters where I live. NONE!

  • @SignalNeverFades make some?

  • @SignalNeverFades Convert IRL friends?

  • @katiemayyy710 Haha, I've tried :) It's okay. I like being different anyway. :D

  • Loved this video. And it makes me happy that you do anthropology - I do anthropology! I love anthropology! :D And I now really want to read that book - it's Amazon time.

Also, I've just had an idea for a project I thought you might like, all about connecting nerdfighters... you can find it in your pants, look for Your Traveling Pants under "Projects & Braincrack --> Miscellaneous"

  • I didn't catch everything you said but i noticed you enjoyed saying it so i Automatically enjoyed it :]

  • This is a wonderful video! So intelligent and engaging.

I'm a total social sciences nerd - I love seeing how different models and theories relate to our real life experiences. It's so exciting to be like YES, THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT WORKS!

This community of practice guy sounds pretty interesting :) Thanks for helping me to learn something new today :)

  • This is lovely, you described what neardfighteria really means to me and to all of us, I think every neardfighter should see this DFTBA

  • i miss you !

  • @pilosop0tacio i've been right here :]

  • thank you for being so awesome, paige! I think I have a girl-crush on you! I just graduated from university with a masters degree in social anthropology and it is lovely to see, that other people study similar things and like them!

  • @filandaserafin awwwyaycongrats!

  • Do this as your final dissertation!

  • I think you just wrote your whole dissertation in a youtube video! Woah.

  • I'm currently reading 'About a Boy in my pants' by Nick Hornby.

    My Hornby collection also entails:

A Long Way Down in my pant and Juliet, Naked in my pants.

My all time favourite book is Lord of the Flies in my pants, though.

  • This is starting to sound like Dan Brown's south pole of the moon... and you can see where that got us.

  • Your pants is the only cool place to be on a Friday night. Or any other day of the week. Hell, I will be in your pants every day for the rest on my life if I can. tee hee never gets old XD

  • This was fantastic. John and Hank simply must know of this video, as it was completely perfect!

  • Thank you for talking about this, Paige. It's great to see some of the more well known members of the community standing up and reassuring everyone to calm down. Well spoken.

  • I am a part of Your Pants! :) So happy.

Beautiful words, Paige. You are a wonderful person.

  • i love when i meet other nerdfighters because of my pizza john shirt or because i flash our DFTBA gang sign, it makes my day! :D

  • I. Love. Watching you talk about this. Please talk about this forever.

Also... I'd like to do some negotiating with you. what?

  • I was originally going to post a comment about how ridiculously sure I am that we would be friends IRL if we ever met, because this is exactly the kind of conversation that I love and crave. I could listen to this all day, and I'd love to contribute to the discussion. HOWEVER, before I could post that, I read some of the comments... and wow. Lots of potential friends here :) You attract an intelligent fan base, Paige! We're all united by your clever insights, and enviable necklaces.

  • One person lost a fight to a nerd.

  • Well this video is wonderful. I've studied a lot of prod-user audiences through my media degree and whilst I generally focus on the interaction with content it's nice to hear you discuss it anthropologically focusing on the interaction among people.

  • Great video! Heart felt, well said, and greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks for sharing this, Paige!

  • I knew I could count on you to make a video that'd make me feel better about Nerdfighteria. Some of the discussion has made me a little sad.

All the videos people have made about it have said positive things too, but sort of in a way like the positive things about this community are becoming less prominent and we need to hold onto them because the negative things are overpowering the positives, but this video wasn't like that.

I'm super super articulate today. This video made me grin lots. <3

  • When you mentioned leaving notes in John's books, I smiled to myself. Because I bought a copy of Paper Towns at Barnes and Noble and found a note from two Nerdfighters in it. I then proceeded to look the one who left their last name up on Facebook and am now friends with both of them. I've also discovered that I have more in common with them than just being a Nerdfighter. Like attending the same church as one of them, and a mutual love for Family Force 5 and Jesus. :D

    DFTBA.

  • @omgitsbecki that is perfection! once i commented on a girl's blog on the ning...we ended up at the same john green event and were IRL BFFLs after that.

  • Fantastic video, Paige. Thank you! DFTBA!

  • Great video Paige :)

  • you explained this beautifully... probably my favorite of all the "what it is to be a nerdfighter" videos we've been seeing lately.

  • This was a beautifully crafted, well-spoken and informative video. It makes me happy on the inside.

  • @LAshlieH :]

  • I loveee nerdfighers. Siriusly, becoming a nerdfighter was one of the absolute best things that has ever happened to me.

  • Im in love with you...

haha i think i wrote that in a comment to you before haha

  • @MahaNomi hahaha. then it must be a deep and lasting love. or something.

  • I'm glad someone finally mentioned the Harry Potter thing. I just wasn't allowed to read them when I was little and I still havn't. I don't know why. I'm sure I'd love them (:

  • @Chocohall i think you should when you have the time....they are amazing books...but i will still be your friend if you don't :]

  • I LOVE being a part of nerdfighteria. Great video! :)

  • There are so many nerdfighters at my school, it's wonderful :) At least eight freshmen, at least three sophomores, and I just found out a senior is a nerdfighter. It doesn't seem like a lot, but so many people don't know any nerdfighters IRL, so... :)

  • Any group of people no matter why they're grouped will have those who have a group that hate them. Regardless of why the group is formed.

  • Hey, so uh.... Could we sing singamajig songs and make out... Like all day Paige?

  • so you're like temperance, right?

  • I would just like to say that every time I watch one of your videos, I come away from it enlightened, inspired, and a bit happier than I was before.

Thanks so much, and keep up the great work.

    : )

  • Yes! I'm not the only one who accidentally said Nerdfighterias instead of Nerdfighters in a video :) I feel better about my poor speaking skills now, thank you Paige.

  • Speaking of meeting nerdfighters, someone recognized my nerdfighters shirt I wore today and it was tuns o' fun talking with her :D

  • I adore when the worlds of academics and youtube intersect. Thank you so much. I hope Wenger sees this and is impressed :)

  • You're quite smart, you are.

  • Your Pants is alive a kicking!!

  • My method of trying to find nerdfighters in my classroom is to put the sequence 'DFTBA' into any test with a long enough vocabulary matching section. So far no one has noticed.

  • Some days I feel like nerdfighteria is at the cusp of not needing hank/john other days i feel like they'll never live beyond them.

  • Playing some xbox one day I saw a person join the game I was in. Their name was a dead give away that they were a Nerdfighter. So... I sent a message acknowledging their mindset and we are now friends on xbox. My first real time experience coming across another Nerdfighter. It is a grand feeling. : )

  • @132L7 Twitter's a great place to find other nerdfighters too :)

  • @emilylime88 I don’t have twitter though. I can’t afford a smart phone plan and being that Twitter is applied for quick comments (primarily) by phone, I’m happy with just having Facebook. I don’t post much in my status comments anyway. Thank you for the heads up though. : )

  • @132L7 It's ok, I didn't have a smart phone for like 2 years while I had twitter. You should try it out. I'm emikatj on there :)

  • Etienne Wenger is AWESOME!! as a fellow anthro major (omg yay) i'm SUPPPER jealous that you got to meet him!!

  • @seven2one he was so nice and interesting and all that. hopefully you will get to one day!

  • This was a wonderful explanation about nerdfighteria! I am absolutely glad that I was able to discover the vlogbrothers, and thus live like a NerdFighter! :)

    Great video, by the way!:)

  • Hope. I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • This is totally funny because just a couple days ago one of my friends had "Darling, Fetch the Battle Axe" in her status and I freaked out because I had no idea she was a nerdfighter. Needless to say, there was much excitement on both ends of the conversation that ensued after that.

  • @NewbSombrero that is so beautiful!

  • @hopeonatenspeed I would agree. It was actually the second thing like that to happen. I don't really remember the details related to the first one other than it was last September. Before that, I thought I was the only nerdfighter in my area. Then a couple weekends ago I met a nerdfighter due to my mentioning of John's zombie apocalypse novel in a conversation about zombies. It was my first real world nerdfighter moment and it resulted in abundant happy dancing and hugging.

  • @NewbSombrero The same exact thing happened to me, same phrase. I didn't let on how excited I was though.

  • I love how you do a creepy face touch while saying "happy memories". Creepy face touches win my heart

  • @PHvlogger i was thinking of you. what?

  • As I said to John and Fizzylemon, this is why nerdfighteria is awesome. You have some fantastic people out there who are just amazing and that we are united in a union but remain individuals. It's like being a pizza lover, everyone loves pizza, but they have different topping preferences, no shame to it.

Like always Paige, another excellent video for people to smile over :)

  • I love you! And I know that's ok even though I don't know you because were both nerdfighters. Right?

  • @jazzelineknox hahahah. it is totally okay.

  • that was so well said! You made the point that a lot of people have been making in a clear and interesting fashion. It made me feel even more excited to be a nerdfighter!

  • That was so well said. I like how you integrated what you learned by applying it to something you love, while using the medium you were talking about. Pure Awesome!

  • Thank you for explaining Nerdfighter (Nerdfighteria?)! It was Short,Sweet and Simple!

  • @ErysimumInconspicuum i'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • I didn't turn off pandora while watching this and I have to say Any Other Name by Thomas Newman made this video even more awesome than it already was. Seriously, it made you sound extra intelligent and powerful xD (not that you weren't already, this is a great video, I want to study anthropology in college too!)

  • @karenlikesyou ohhhh. intense.

  • I'm liking this theoretical approach to nerdfighteria :) It's a nice change rather than just saying 'It's awesome!' which it is :)

  • @leafrulez yeahyeah. not that i don't love talking about how awesome it is. hahahaha.

  • @hopeonatenspeed Haha, we all love talking about how awesome it is :D

  • great video! I always enjoy your videos.

  • @uberexplorer thanks!

  • i just adore listening to your voice paige

  • Oh Paige, you're so smart!

  • aaa paige i love you so much. you are so brilliant and sweet and the best.

  • @suchducks you're pretty fantastic yourself.

  • Im a nerd, but im a pacifist, can I beard a 'Nerdpacifist'?

  • @bennett93ish That sounds great, but I don't think you understand...we fight world suck. I believe that's always good just because we don't need guns to do it, just awesome.

  • @randomdanceparty Well if that's the case then im defiantly ready to take the world suck down to lower china town!

  • @bennett93ish i'm a little bit in love with this comment. hah.

  • @hopeonatenspeed So you should be, even my comments are lovely, and obviously my ego as well.

  • @bennett93ish No.

  • @bennett93ish Nerdfighters fight by peaceful means. Kinda like Gandhi.

  • dftba.

  • This is actually particularly cool to me, because I am currently writing a research essay for my Composition I class all about Youtube as a community in general.

  • @akmelza you should read communities of practice...or at least parts of it. awesome book.

  • first comment! and awesome video as usual ^^
