Thank you for having made this video. I'm working on a short answer essay for a college application supplement and I'm writing about Nerdfighteria as a community and you just helped me evade the evil spirits of writersblock. Thank You for increasing the levels of Awesome in my life. <3 DFTBA
I'm doing a senior project on online communities. After seeing this video early last year, I knew I wanted to look at communities. We as an online communtiy have seen how we can enact social change and have an impact on society. And I am now reading this book for my project. I just wanna say that I agree with everything that Paige said. Communities of Practice not only applies to Nerdfighteria, but to so many communities that we are all a part of. I suggest that everyone get their hand on a copy
I have met so many nerdfighters recently just from the shirts. And they've all been such wonderful people. I like being a Nerdfighter. I think I've always been one, but without a community of practice I wasn't nearly so good at it. Thankyou Nerdfighteria.
how can i be a better nerdfighter? i don't have money to donate or time to help charities. I'm camera shy so I can't do amazing blogs like this. help?
I've never heard an anthropologist talk with such enthusiasm about humans. I'd love to see you go really far in the community, and the world as a whole. Positivity and enthusiasm WILL make the world more awesome. Favourited, liked and subscribed!
My friend said she thought she saw a nerdfighter in town (OMG! My town is tiny, so that's amazing!) I mean, she might not have been, but she saw someone walking in town with a jacket saying "I pwn n00bs", which might be a nerdfighter reference- even if it isn't, it's cool to think so!
Frankly, I think that my favourite thing about Nerdfighteria is that from a couple of guys vlogging, and being awesome enough to make a lot of friends by doing so, grew a thing that is wonderful enough and coherent enough that not only can it be defined as a real live community by anthropology, but that people are enthusiastic enough about it to do so, make videos doing so, and then put them on the internet.
I love defining community and so I love this video. I think you really open the idea of what community can be, and especially one like nerdfighteria that aims to be as inclusive as possible as opposed to other communities which can be very exclusive.
I was introduced into nerdfighteria mid-2007 by people who turned into decepticons, and I thought I didn't know any nerdfighters. But there are five nerdfighters in my drama class and a few in my school. :D
The other day I was sitting in the cafeteria at my college. I was just sitting and talking to my friends, and then I looked up, and the person walking past my table had a pizza john shirt on. Of course after that I went and talked to her... It was awesome :D
See, the thing about seeing people in relevant shirts is that I'm always afraid they got it at Goodwill or something, and have no idea what it actually is about...because the one time that happened, it would be me freaking out and making a fool of myself.
I love that you've told me about this book and this theory. I am a part of an interdisciplinary program called New College that just had a retreat and talked so much about what we want to be and how involved we want people to be; it reminds me of Nerdfighteria. I'm definitely going to be looking for that book and bringing it to our next council meeting :)
@SuperBonsoir nerdfighteria is the community of people surrounding john and hank/the vlogbrother's videos. all the links are in the description if you want to check them out. they are fantastic. you should.
I've been trying to be more involved in the nerdfighter community for the past year or so, staring off with last year's john day (but it was never included in the video because it was me singing happy birthday to john with some artwork I did as the visuals). I've found a lot of really good videos by nerdfighters and half of the people I'm subscribed to are nerdfighters. I did some commenting and donating during the 2010 p4a. What other things can I do to be more involved with the nerdfighters?
@lightanddarklove the thing about nerdfighteria is that it is really big and everyone wants the attention of john and hank...but they are busy boys. i'd say just make sure you have a good group of nerdfighter friends...do nerdfighterly things together...find ways to let the community know about them...and know that you are contributing to the community whether or not you get acknowledgment from someone for it.
@hopeonatenspeed the problem is I don't know any nerdfighters in my area. I would try to get some of my friends into the nerdfighter community but I'm probably the person among my friends who understand the capabilities of the internet most.
I think your pants has the possibility to connect nerdfighters a lot more, but we need to make a flash webpage with like a map of the world and every nerdfighter can give their twitter or youtube and first (and/or last) name so we can all find each other.
@zengrenouille Also, are you working on your master's in cultural anthropology? How do you like that? Do you have any advice for those of us who will soon be going through the anthropology graduate school experience, ourselves?
When you talk, you move half of your mouth more than the other half. I'm fairly certain it's your right half, but cameras sometimes do funny things to people and their sides.
One of my best friends at uni is an anthropologist and I'm often more interested in her degree than my own. So more of this Paige, please and thank you :D
Do you watch Bones? If so how accurate is the stuff that Bones says about different cultures and stuff? I figure you would know since you said you're studying Anthropoloy.
@anniscalling hope on a ten speed. it is from a song by the roosevelts called ten speed. i liked it a lot when i was making my aim username forever ago...i still like it.
french the illama I love your face dearly and I want to be inside of your pants where I belong so that we can help each other out when get tiny chickens stuck in our heads and do happy dances together forever.
And it reminds me to buy John's books. I guess I'll go sign up on the waiting list at the library. It will probably take a year to get one, but when I do, I'm gonna write a sticky note and add it onto the fun.
I really liked this video! I like how you focused on all the positive things in Nerdfighteria and not the negative mean things that I guess have arisen within the community!
I love nerdfighteria- Its a magical place, near Wonderland and across the street from Narnia- or at least I wish it was, because that would be awesome!!
Specifically our inside jokes are "so jokes". Ahh, an inside joke that is no longer used!
Thanks for this Paige! I have yet to see a Pizza John shirt in real life, but I guess it's only a matter of time at this point. Maybe I should get one of my own? :P
Loved this video. And it makes me happy that you do anthropology - I do anthropology! I love anthropology! :D And I now really want to read that book - it's Amazon time.
Also, I've just had an idea for a project I thought you might like, all about connecting nerdfighters... you can find it in your pants, look for Your Traveling Pants under "Projects & Braincrack --> Miscellaneous"
This is a wonderful video! So intelligent and engaging.
I'm a total social sciences nerd - I love seeing how different models and theories relate to our real life experiences. It's so exciting to be like YES, THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT WORKS!
This community of practice guy sounds pretty interesting :) Thanks for helping me to learn something new today :)
thank you for being so awesome, paige! I think I have a girl-crush on you! I just graduated from university with a masters degree in social anthropology and it is lovely to see, that other people study similar things and like them!
Your pants is the only cool place to be on a Friday night. Or any other day of the week. Hell, I will be in your pants every day for the rest on my life if I can. tee hee never gets old XD
Thank you for talking about this, Paige. It's great to see some of the more well known members of the community standing up and reassuring everyone to calm down. Well spoken.
I was originally going to post a comment about how ridiculously sure I am that we would be friends IRL if we ever met, because this is exactly the kind of conversation that I love and crave. I could listen to this all day, and I'd love to contribute to the discussion. HOWEVER, before I could post that, I read some of the comments... and wow. Lots of potential friends here :) You attract an intelligent fan base, Paige! We're all united by your clever insights, and enviable necklaces.
Well this video is wonderful. I've studied a lot of prod-user audiences through my media degree and whilst I generally focus on the interaction with content it's nice to hear you discuss it anthropologically focusing on the interaction among people.
I knew I could count on you to make a video that'd make me feel better about Nerdfighteria. Some of the discussion has made me a little sad.
All the videos people have made about it have said positive things too, but sort of in a way like the positive things about this community are becoming less prominent and we need to hold onto them because the negative things are overpowering the positives, but this video wasn't like that.
I'm super super articulate today. This video made me grin lots. <3
When you mentioned leaving notes in John's books, I smiled to myself. Because I bought a copy of Paper Towns at Barnes and Noble and found a note from two Nerdfighters in it. I then proceeded to look the one who left their last name up on Facebook and am now friends with both of them. I've also discovered that I have more in common with them than just being a Nerdfighter. Like attending the same church as one of them, and a mutual love for Family Force 5 and Jesus. :D
@omgitsbecki that is perfection! once i commented on a girl's blog on the ning...we ended up at the same john green event and were IRL BFFLs after that.
I'm glad someone finally mentioned the Harry Potter thing. I just wasn't allowed to read them when I was little and I still havn't. I don't know why. I'm sure I'd love them (:
There are so many nerdfighters at my school, it's wonderful :) At least eight freshmen, at least three sophomores, and I just found out a senior is a nerdfighter. It doesn't seem like a lot, but so many people don't know any nerdfighters IRL, so... :)
Yes! I'm not the only one who accidentally said Nerdfighterias instead of Nerdfighters in a video :) I feel better about my poor speaking skills now, thank you Paige.
My method of trying to find nerdfighters in my classroom is to put the sequence 'DFTBA' into any test with a long enough vocabulary matching section. So far no one has noticed.
Playing some xbox one day I saw a person join the game I was in. Their name was a dead give away that they were a Nerdfighter. So... I sent a message acknowledging their mindset and we are now friends on xbox. My first real time experience coming across another Nerdfighter. It is a grand feeling. : )
@emilylime88 I don’t have twitter though. I can’t afford a smart phone plan and being that Twitter is applied for quick comments (primarily) by phone, I’m happy with just having Facebook. I don’t post much in my status comments anyway. Thank you for the heads up though. : )
This was a wonderful explanation about nerdfighteria! I am absolutely glad that I was able to discover the vlogbrothers, and thus live like a NerdFighter! :)
This is totally funny because just a couple days ago one of my friends had "Darling, Fetch the Battle Axe" in her status and I freaked out because I had no idea she was a nerdfighter. Needless to say, there was much excitement on both ends of the conversation that ensued after that.
@hopeonatenspeed I would agree. It was actually the second thing like that to happen. I don't really remember the details related to the first one other than it was last September. Before that, I thought I was the only nerdfighter in my area. Then a couple weekends ago I met a nerdfighter due to my mentioning of John's zombie apocalypse novel in a conversation about zombies. It was my first real world nerdfighter moment and it resulted in abundant happy dancing and hugging.
As I said to John and Fizzylemon, this is why nerdfighteria is awesome. You have some fantastic people out there who are just amazing and that we are united in a union but remain individuals. It's like being a pizza lover, everyone loves pizza, but they have different topping preferences, no shame to it.
Like always Paige, another excellent video for people to smile over :)
that was so well said! You made the point that a lot of people have been making in a clear and interesting fashion. It made me feel even more excited to be a nerdfighter!
That was so well said. I like how you integrated what you learned by applying it to something you love, while using the medium you were talking about. Pure Awesome!
I didn't turn off pandora while watching this and I have to say Any Other Name by Thomas Newman made this video even more awesome than it already was. Seriously, it made you sound extra intelligent and powerful xD (not that you weren't already, this is a great video, I want to study anthropology in college too!)
@bennett93ish That sounds great, but I don't think you understand...we fight world suck. I believe that's always good just because we don't need guns to do it, just awesome.
This is actually particularly cool to me, because I am currently writing a research essay for my Composition I class all about Youtube as a community in general.
YOU LOOK A HECK OF A LOT LIKE THIS GIRL I'M FRIENDS WITH ON TUMBLR...But it's not you...Weird.

Well this video is wonderful. I've studied a lot of prod-user audiences through my media degree and whilst I generally focus on the interaction with content it's nice to hear you discuss it anthropologically focusing on the interaction among people.

Great video! Heart felt, well said, and greatly appreciated.

DFTBA.

@omgitsbecki that is perfection! once i commented on a girl's blog on the ning...we ended up at the same john green event and were IRL BFFLs after that.

you explained this beautifully... probably my favorite of all the "what it is to be a nerdfighter" videos we've been seeing lately.

This was a beautifully crafted, well-spoken and informative video. It makes me happy on the inside.

There are so many nerdfighters at my school, it's wonderful :) At least eight freshmen, at least three sophomores, and I just found out a senior is a nerdfighter. It doesn't seem like a lot, but so many people don't know any nerdfighters IRL, so... :)

Any group of people no matter why they're grouped will have those who have a group that hate them. Regardless of why the group is formed.

I would just like to say that every time I watch one of your videos, I come away from it enlightened, inspired, and a bit happier than I was before.
Thanks so much, and keep up the great work.

Some days I feel like nerdfighteria is at the cusp of not needing hank/john other days i feel like they'll never live beyond them.

Playing some xbox one day I saw a person join the game I was in. Their name was a dead give away that they were a Nerdfighter. So... I sent a message acknowledging their mindset and we are now friends on xbox. My first real time experience coming across another Nerdfighter. It is a grand feeling. : )

@132L7 Twitter's a great place to find other nerdfighters too :)
emilylime88 1 year ago
@emilylime88 I don’t have twitter though. I can’t afford a smart phone plan and being that Twitter is applied for quick comments (primarily) by phone, I’m happy with just having Facebook. I don’t post much in my status comments anyway. Thank you for the heads up though. : )

@132L7 It's ok, I didn't have a smart phone for like 2 years while I had twitter. You should try it out. I'm emikatj on there :)

This is totally funny because just a couple days ago one of my friends had "Darling, Fetch the Battle Axe" in her status and I freaked out because I had no idea she was a nerdfighter. Needless to say, there was much excitement on both ends of the conversation that ensued after that.

@NewbSombrero that is so beautiful!
hopeonatenspeed 1 year ago
@hopeonatenspeed I would agree. It was actually the second thing like that to happen. I don't really remember the details related to the first one other than it was last September. Before that, I thought I was the only nerdfighter in my area. Then a couple weekends ago I met a nerdfighter due to my mentioning of John's zombie apocalypse novel in a conversation about zombies. It was my first real world nerdfighter moment and it resulted in abundant happy dancing and hugging.

@NewbSombrero The same exact thing happened to me, same phrase. I didn't let on how excited I was though.
