Having used the ferries in the Philippines many times. I cannot understand why so many died. There are plenty of life vests and you are always in eyeshot of land. I have been in a storm as well and I seen many people wearing there vests in the lobby, and it wasnt even a typhoon. So I dont think it caught these peopole be surprise.

There was a report of a dolphin seen trying to rescue a fisherman from drowning after his boat sank in Typhoon Frank. A survivor saw a dolphin, which was about the size of an adult human, drag and push the man toward Burias Island. Unfortunately, neither the fisherman nor the dolphin survived. After the storm, local residents found the dead bodies of the man and the dolphin, which were buried on the island.
You'd think after something like this would happen, both would survive. That is so sad ;_; That's so unfortunate and yet it's a beautiful story. Good thing both the man and the dolphin were buried. I hope they find more victims, I can't imagine all the pain this typhoon has caused.

Even with their bad track record, the ferry MV Dona Paz sank after colliding with a fuel tanker days before Christmas in 1987, killing more than 4,300 people. The Dona Paz was owned by Sulpicio Lines, the same shipping company that operated the Princess of the Stars.

oops - sorry for ranting... maybe it's also of the horrid weather. but that company (Sulpicio Lines) had been also involved in the ship-related accident way back in 1987(the MV Dona Paz which killed 4,000 people - overcrowded), MV Marlyn (1988-300 dead), MV princess of the orient(1998-luckily no one died), and now this.
Why was Princess of the Stars allowed to sail when Typhoon Signal No.1 was operative. The Philippine Coast Guard said it had advised shipping lines against sailing. The owners said conditions at the time the ship left port (9 pm, Friday) were considered safe. The bottom line is that the owners knew there was a strong typhoon threatening the southern Philippines; they knew that sailing on very rough seas and powerful winds with hundreds of passengers and tons of cargo was dangerous.

Sulpicio ships and ferries have figured in many of the worst maritime disasters in the Philippines. In December 1987, an overloaded Doña Paz collided with an oil tanker off Mindoro Island, killing 4,386 people.
In October 1988, another Sulpicio Lines ship, Doña Marilyn, sank near Leyte Province, killing 300 passengers and crew. In 1998, 200 died when the Princess of the Orient, also a Sulpicio liner, capsized near Manila during a storm.

A big ship sinks during a storm or in pacific weather, hundreds of passengers and crew lose their lives, an investigation starts, the hearing takes an inordinate time, the decision pends, no official report is made and amnesia develops over the case. The shipping line casts off again for more profitable business.

I have a YouTube friend in the Philippines and she was in Cebu last month, possibly on that ship. Left her a message when I read about the typhoon, but she hasn't replied. But I see tonight that she logged in shortly after I left the message. She is the type of person who helps others so she is probably busy helping people in Manila.
My YouTube friend contacted me and she and her family came through the storm okay. She says that she did take that ship for her return trip back to Manila. On a previous trip she was on a ship that also later sank.

I always dreamed of one day getting on board the largest luxury liner in the philippines. A great loss. I pray for the poor souls who may have sunk with her. *Stating that the sake of the ships voyage on a storm signal #1 should be decided by the Shipping company, either to allow the ship to continue it's voyage or hold.

Having used the ferries in the Philippines many times. I cannot understand why so many died. There are plenty of life vests and you are always in eyeshot of land. I have been in a storm as well and I seen many people wearing there vests in the lobby, and it wasnt even a typhoon. So I dont think it caught these peopole be surprise.

No matter how safe and advance ang technology implemented onboard there are times things are beyond control. Kahit yong pinaka high-tech na bansa merun din sea tragedy. Ang pinagkaiba lang nila sa atin na miminimize ang casuality dahil and Coast Guard nila are trained and dedicated to save life even in the most severe weather conditions. No responsible captain would ever take 800+ passengers into waters expecting a typhoon. While you are correct the engine failure was the primary reason for the crash, I am sure you are aware that engine failures on these ferries is not exactly a rare occurance.
Even so, a properly operating vessel would be subject to sinking from a tremendous rogue wave, which can occur in a typhoon. The commander of the Manila Coast Guard must have gotten a nice gratuity to allow that departure.

Looks like the blame will be placed on the coast guard and the captain. Even with their bad track record, the ferry MV Dona Paz sank after colliding with a fuel tanker days before Christmas in 1987, killing more than 4,300 people. The Dona Paz was owned by Sulpicio Lines, the same shipping company that operated the Princess of the Stars.

Boils down to two main sectors to BLAME and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY: The Sulpicio Lines Company and the Philippine Coast Guard... PATHETIC.. makes me sick how these 2 sectors did not do their jobs at all. For the Shipping company: all for MONEY.. for the Coast Guard, they jkust sit back and just blah blah blah on TV, too late to rescue... they did not even WARM the ship during the sail... nor they DID NOT RESPOND to the SOS from the Captain of the ship...

that could be possible or they did'nt just care whatever happen to them while sailing through the open ocean they know typhoon headed on their way. we just hope that through this tradegy they should learn and make a certain action that this can be prevented on the future.

oops - sorry for ranting... maybe it's also of the horrid weather. but that company (Sulpicio Lines) had been also involved in the ship-related accident way back in 1987(the MV Dona Paz which killed 4,000 people - overcrowded), MV Marlyn (1988-300 dead), MV princess of the orient(1998-luckily no one died), and now this.

Why was Princess of the Stars allowed to sail when Typhoon Signal No.1 was operative. The Philippine Coast Guard said it had advised shipping lines against sailing. The owners said conditions at the time the ship left port (9 pm, Friday) were considered safe. The bottom line is that the owners knew there was a strong typhoon threatening the southern Philippines; they knew that sailing on very rough seas and powerful winds with hundreds of passengers and tons of cargo was dangerous.

The vessel described is the largest car-ferry operating in Japan. There is accommodation for 554 passengers, and 152 trucks and 136 cars can be carried on two vehicle decks connected by a ramp. Loading is over bow and stern ramps.

Sulpicio ships and ferries have figured in many of the worst maritime disasters in the Philippines. In December 1987, an overloaded Doña Paz collided with an oil tanker off Mindoro Island, killing 4,386 people.
In October 1988, another Sulpicio Lines ship, Doña Marilyn, sank near Leyte Province, killing 300 passengers and crew. In 1998, 200 died when the Princess of the Orient, also a Sulpicio liner, capsized near Manila during a storm.

I guess the weekend ferry is busy, can't lose money by stopping it from going out into a thypoon! The company made this statement: "Our company also assures the families of all unfortunate passengers who perished in this incident that they will be properly compensated."

Well said, i think you know what happened. A big ship sinks during a storm or in pacific weather, hundreds of passengers and crew lose their lives, an investigation starts, the hearing takes an inordinate time, the decision pends, no official report is made and amnesia develops over the case. The shipping line casts off again for more profitable business.

So tragic... you can't take chances with Mother Nature, she's just too powerful.
I have a YouTube friend in the Philippines and she was in Cebu last month, possibly on that ship. Left her a message when I read about the typhoon, but she hasn't replied. But I see tonight that she logged in shortly after I left the message. She is the type of person who helps others so she is probably busy helping people in Manila.

My YouTube friend contacted me and she and her family came through the storm okay. She says that she did take that ship for her return trip back to Manila. On a previous trip she was on a ship that also later sank.

Coast guard officials told reporters Monday that they had cleared the ferry to leave Manila for Cebu, a city in the central Philippines, on Friday night because the initial forecast for Fengshen showed that the storm would only hit the eastern part of the country, away from the ferry's route. But according to the government weather bureau, the typhoon changed direction Saturday, moving toward the center of the country, running right into the ferry's path.

I always dreamed of one day getting on board the largest luxury liner in the philippines. A great loss. I pray for the poor souls who may have sunk with her. I hope this tragedy at sea will never ever happen again-- as we consider our country an archipelago of which sea travel is the most common mean of getting across places.

I don't understand why the Coast Guard would not be blamed on this accident. They allowed the vessel to go on her voyage when there is a typhoon that could easily change its path.

There is some sort of understanding between the Ph. coast guard and shipping companies here in the Philippines.
*Stating that the sake of the ships voyage on a storm signal #1 should be decided by the Shipping company, either to allow the ship to continue it's voyage or hold.
in this case when the ship left port in manila the storm signal is at #1....
