I am a mom of a 5 year old daughter with a profound hearing loss. SOme people just don't understand. It isn't like you get the CI and bam you are hearing like normal imediately, it takes a lot of hard work and intense speech therapy and then they learn to talk. I love ASL and my daughter will learn it one day if she wants, but for now we are embracing the fact that she can speak and listen just like everyone else around her. I know many disagree with not teaching her sign, but she is doing great
@alidevey I am a hearing person and its so important to fit sign into her life, too. It will enrich her life... Really it will. I only know minimal sign and I feel cut off because i can't communicate to the deaf community easily.
I understand that for a rare few people the CI will work.. but everyone won't be a positive poster child for the CI.. and I also think if the child is deaf he/she should understand at least a part of their deaf culture..learn some ASl.. imagine growing up thinking your hearing and despising deaf people.. just to learn that you are one)
Missing something? I'm not sure what you mean. This is the activation of her CI on her other ear with the first CI turned off. So, this is the first time she has heard anything through this ear. It's more like, "I don't understand what this noise is and I'm only 3."
She learned some basic sign language before his first CI at one year old. Now that she can hear through both CIs, her focus is on hearing and speaking.
Im suprised they dont completely freak out. i mean, imagine that all of a sudden you are given a new sense.

I don't see her smiling at all, can't you tell she's missing something in her life?
