Daytime soaps with their neverending story lines are gradually becoming a thing of the past. Eventually, they'll all be gone, even OLTL, DOOL, and Y&R. I have but one thing to say. Thank God!
@Gazzara5 Shut up! Soaps are generational their timeless, and to see the oldest Soap cancelled for a cheap unnecessary talk show is messed up! And to have the 2nd oldest soap cancelled the year later for a stupid talk show is just wrong! What is this world coming to? Not everybody wants to watch talk shows and reality shows. Soaps were a great escape from reality, so why would I want to watch reality? I live reality everyday!
@irmhsva If that's true why are their ratings shrinking and why are they being cancelled in increasing numbers? And don't tell me to shut up. I'll say whatever I want.
@Gazzara5 Ok sorry yeah shut up was kinda mean, and there are tons of theory's and reasonings as too why soaps ratings are slipping. Some reasonings are that more women are working instead of at home which I find is the stupidest reasoning as too slipping ratings. But either way soaps are classic and they just shouldn't be cancelled no matter what is how I feel. And if they must go replace it with something with class instead of something cheap and meaningless.
CBS should have just combined GL and ATWT cast and took over full production of the new show they could of created. Imagine having Reva moving to Oakdale and stealing Tom from Margo. LOL
I watched Guiding Light for 28 years. from 1981 till 2009. I loved watching it. I laughed at goofy and wonderful Nola and her fantasys, I cried when Maureen died, I fumed when They got rid of Michael Zaslow when he developed ALS. These people were like friends to me. I invited them into my living room every weekday afternoon at 3PM. I dream of the show, I wonder how the cast members that didn't get another soap are living without a job. I will always miss my Guiding Light!
I grew up watching with my grandparents and on my own and I stopped watching after they went over the edge. The way the filming changed and the camera's moved around too much and they left the studio and changed from the traditional Soap opera setting and look to more of a reality TV way as well as the actors on the show reading their lines & how many of the actors no longer looked glamourous but overweight & bloated & bad costumes. Fans watched it for escape. Time travel & cloning were stupid
I do blam Ellen Wheeler to a certain point. But the real blame goes to the higher powers for not firing her and her team when they still had a fighting chance. The show's production model was fucking crap. But the soap genre is slowly but surely coming to an end.
I swear I hate CBS so much and I swear to God that I will never watch any of their shows or programs or even news because they have done this. I didn't even watch Guiding Light but I respect the Soap Opera genre as a whole. It shows much more culture than screaming at a freaking game show like an uneducated person. I have been watching OLTL since 1999 and upon comparing it with GL, it seems like they are the two soaps that have the most in common (cam. angles, NYC location, etc.). Maybe try OLTL
gosh i'm 29 and have watched this show litterally my entire life who could'nt have been mesmerized by charachters like reva and josh and so many others what a shame they pulled thye plug
Being in the UK, GL is a soap I have only ever seen in odds and sods via the internet.
BUT as a writer of television here I think it is a tragedy that a show with almost a century behind it couldn't be allowed this fallow period and the opportunity to find its audience once again. A change of Producer rather than a total shift of filming style, cast or anything else is often what is needed.
Words cannot express how I am going to miss this wonderful show. I have been a faithful fan of GL for many many years and had to see the last episode today with tears in my eyes. I can think of so many other shows that should have been dropped instead of this one. My gosh 72+ years...I started watching as a child back in the early 50's with my grandmother. I'm heartbroken those people were like family, now gone forever... makes me so mad!
Hey! some of today's famous actors and actresses got their start on Guilding Light and other long time soaps. Some credit their career from shows like this. This soap surpassed all other soaps as the only long running show on TV today. 70+ years running..That's deserves respect in my book. Can you name ANY other soap( or TV show for that matter) that has run this long?
Why don't the soap magazines run a tribute edition to GL? There is enough history with the show it would fill a magazine. I would be more than happy to buy it. I would probably buy a copy for my mom who has watched/listened to the show since the radio days. I have a feeling they would if it was another show. The soap magazines seem to have their favorite soaps also. The cancellation of GL barely got a paragraph in Soap Digest.
this makes me so sad. I was watching 60 minutes the other night about this and they said they're losing the younger audience. I'm fourteen years old and I'm proud to say that I love guiding light. even though I was not alive for the earlier portions, my great grandma listened to it on the radio from the beginning and it's been a part of my family for years. it's horrible to see this great soap end.
It is a shame..I wasn't a fan of this show but I remember it sometimes watching as a child and now as a adult well into middle age. These shows are from a long-gone by era and probably well past it's time. Your'e right..This show started as a first from radio, then moved to TV in the early 50's. It's been on ever since and has been a institution for CBS Daytime. Such a shame for millions of fans, and I personally hate to see it go.
its not p & g fault.they tried to shop it to other networks but no one would buy.its cbs fault.they dont consider people recording guiding light in when they look at ratings.i hear as the world turns is next.they need to cancel bold and beautiful its crap yet gets the ratings because it follows y & r.goodbye guiding light you have been a friend for 35 years to me.shame on cbs.lets make a deal is going to bomb.
I wish that this interview didn't just include Reva/Kim Zimmer. Without the other actors they wouldn't have had a show in the first place. I mean, she couldn't have just talked to herself for a full hr every day for 30 years. Where's Ron Raines? He's a veteran. Beth Chaimberlain? Maybe even a new perspective from actors such as Jeff Branson.
Another idea could be to interview the actors that are currently considered super couples. Get Crystal Chappell, Robert Newman and JL up there with her.
They need to give Guiding Light another chance or make it a night time soap, like knots landing was and put in on thursday nights or something. It fell off for a little while, but Guiding Light is still a good picture.
How awful that a show that has made broadcast history is being replaced by a cheesy game show! If GL had a bigger budget like Y&R and a better time slot, this would not be happening. I will NEVER watch Let's Make a Deal.

I'd gladly sacrafice a CSI for a show like Gunsmoke. Same with daytime TV...it's starting to really suck.
the reason money plain and simple. In reality the creative forces behind the same have to take the blame for allowing viewers to turn out and become uninterested decreasing their ratings and the amount of money an advertiser is willing to pay thereby decreasing the shows budget. I would gather they had a hard time breaking even with the dismal ratings GL has gotten. B&B may be campy but it is the 2nd highest rated show on daytime which is why it will be among the last soaps to go.
I really hate that you are 100% right on your comment here....I have loved this show for almost 40 years.....and ratings mean everything.....and the E.D., and writers in my opion are the ones to blame...I will blame CBS for not firing them 2 years ago, and righting the ship.....
Its a sad truth that ratings mean everything, but what ratings don`t show is how many people are watching segments of the show all over the Internet. This is the nice thing, you dont have to follow each and every storyline, but pick your favorite one. I`m not happy with the writing either, but blaming them for the end? Don`t think so.
I still can't figure out how they can cancel this show as good as it is and keep the crapfest known as "Bold & The Beautiful" on the air. Now I hear that "ATWT" is in trouble...what the hell is wrong with these people? In my opinion, B&B should have been scrapped a long time ago and more effort alotted to shows like GL & ATWT.
i agree they are canceling guiding light and keeping a crap show like bold and beautiful and puting a game show on in guiding lights place.cbs was the best now they want to show crap and reality shows.b and b needs to go.watched guiding light for 35 years they are family to me
I can't help it but I find it in remarkably bad taste for CBS to pay tribute to a show they cancelled. It was THEIR decision to end it. How can they pay tribute to it?
I don't where you saw CBS pay tribute to GL. If you are talking about 60 minutues interview, that was 60 Minutes producers decision to run the interview not CBS. 60 Minutes pretty much decides what they want to air. And I was glad to see the oldest running newsmagazine run a tribute to the oldest running show. Now, if I missed something else that was in tribute to GL and that is what you are referring to I apologize.
I agree with everyone. This soap has been a part of my life ever since I was a child. I use to set the tv to record until I got home for school. Its truly heartbreaking to have this part of ur life taken. Now we are left with a brunch of negative shows to see. It was always a meaning behind every situation that came up on the show. That taught you a life lesson and taught you how to be a better person. I wish CBS would really consider the people that its affecting. WE WANT GUILDING LIGHT TO STAY
21 out of 57 years is hardly guiding the soap for much of its run. Not to mention the fact that the roots of the show's death are in refocusing GL on Reva in the 80's. While it's sad to see the show go, it's way past time for it to go.
I grew up watching soaps, particularly Y&R. I have watched each soap at sometime over the past 15 years. I am watching a genre die that I watched with my Mom and now deceased Grandma. I think my generation was the last one to sit down and watch with their mom's and grandma's. I was 13 at the time I started watching soaps and I have been a fan since. These days I just watch GH, which is also dying a slow death... I can only hope someone will come along and revive the genre! Goodbye GL! :(
it will be a huge hole in daytime, they had one of the best casts on daytime a lot of actors we see on our screens still got their starts on this legend of a show
and I must say I liked the way they filmed the show, it made it feel more real
Thank you CBS, P&G, Ellen Wheeler, and all the others that have had their hands in trashing the show. The reason I love soaps so much. GL not being a constant in my life is going to be so hard. An American classic. A worldwide classic. No other show can touch 72 years. I just hope that CBS does not expect a remake of Let's Make a Deal is going to have a legion of longtime fans like GL did. Goodbye GL and the citizens of Springfield.
VIVA LA GUIDING LIGHT 4EVER. The light will shine 4ever w/ me
im still in shock i cand belive i just dont get it how am i gonna get use to not watch gl everyday at 2 pm omg its just to sad really sad im gonna miss it to much its the only show i watched on tv
I can't believe it...I know this is "it," but I will NEVER forget what Guiding Light has meant to my life. I am so sad about this...GL has some of the hardest working folks in Daytime TV! Damn it, Proctor & Gamble!!! ugh..
I wonder, is producing another daytime soap feasible to do by the big 3 at this time and age? I just noticed that the last soap produced was way back in 1999 when Passions started its run. That was the last soap from the 20th century. No other afternoon drama serial followed after since then.
This makes me so sad because Josh and Reva will forever and always be my all time favorite soap couple. I so hope that they put them together for the ending.
CBS is not the only one to blame. Guiding Light is produced by Procter & Gamble. One of the richest company in the world. If they had really wanted to save GL, noting would have stopped them. Not even CBS. The problem was that Ellen Wheeler wanted HER vision and the hell with the fans. Well the fans showed her and left.
Ellen Wheeler is not to blame. The cancellation is brought by years of deteriorating ratings brought by mishaps brought by past EP before her.
She did what she could to salvage GL. Even if she did not managed to succeed in that effort, the show's final months have been better. Although it cannot compared to its former glory back in the day, but yet the realism showed through.
Sad to see it go, they def got the right person to speak on the show ending, I mean when you think Guiding Light, first character you think of is Reva :).
Yet another thing I blame Bush for. His IDIOT ideas led to a HORRIBLE economy. The horrible economy led to daytime's demise. And now the most famous and iconic American soap opera has to go...
you're telling me to think before i insult someone's intelligence. seems to me you should have intelligence before i can insult it and by making stupid idiotic comments like blaming bush because a stupid soap opera was cancelled doesn't go very far in proving to me you're capable of making an intelligent comment.
Your'e right..This show was supposed to end last year but CBS continued despite losing ratings and outpour from fans all over. With this economy production cost, ratings, etc. continued to plague this long running soap so they have to pull the plug. Such a shame!
two reva's. god one is all they needed lol.

Bye Guiding Light. :(

I like the new format.
Peace :)

And now the most famous and iconic American soap opera has to go...

how long did it take you to get this stupid? a day, a week, a month, a year or have you been this stupid your entire life?
bush and his policies have absolutely nothing to do with guiding light being cancelled

Do u know that actors have to get paid? Do u hae any idea how many ppl have to get paid for a show to be on the air?
What happens when the stupidest President of all times wastes money FOR NO reason & makes 1 bad decision after another?
CBS gets in a tight bind DUE TO THE ECONOMY & they pull the plug IN ORDER TO SAVE MONEY!
Ever heard of cutting costs? Ever heard of the costs of PRODUCTION?
THINK b4 u insult someone's intelligence. Thanks & have a good day!

you're telling me to think before i insult someone's intelligence. seems to me you should have intelligence before i can insult it and by making stupid idiotic comments like blaming bush because a stupid soap opera was cancelled doesn't go very far in proving to me you're capable of making an intelligent comment.

Your'e right..This show was supposed to end last year but CBS continued despite losing ratings and outpour from fans all over. With this economy production cost, ratings, etc. continued to plague this long running soap so they have to pull the plug. Such a shame!
