It is funny, and definitely in an odd way. Though I can't speak for American schools, Aus schools (at least the ones I went to) have a similar kind of social structure. Not so clear cut, but up until the final years, it was always the same sort of people in their groups. And it sucked if you weren't a part of one of the "acceptable" groups. A lot.
