I am guessing that 'Mister Fixed Gear' was having a hard-enough time just staying up on his cycle than he was concerned about the light being red, or being without a single light on himself or his cycle so people could/would be able to see him.
No, not really.. this is a relatively uncommon crash type. In these conditions, most drivers are pretty careful to drive and stop slowly and carefully. I am more concerned about cars turning right in front of my path, the occasional angry driver, and cars or cyclists failing to yield the right-of-way.
