no....your actually tuning the low E string to the pitch of D, so the easiest way to do it is to make your 6th (thickest) string sound like your 4th string (D).

This is one of the best instructional video's I've seen. I'm a brand new beginner, and I can *almost* get the hang of this song thanks to the way you explained it.

My only question is can someone quickly tab out the pull off/hammer on section? I'm just a little slow and can't quite keep up with how quick he plays it on the video. I think it's (B string) 2p0 (G string) 3h4p0h2 but I'm not sure.

It doesn't have to be in drop D, however it does sound a little bit better. I play it either way just depending on where I'm at, and what song I'm coming out of and what I'm going into. Most people can't even tell the difference, however some can, I guess it's just up to you, whether you wanna play it in drop D or not...

Scott, on that second part of the into (the "hard" part), when you go G#A#G# G F D#, I belive you're coming in an eight note late. On the album, Keith comes in on the "and" of 3. You're coming in right on the fourth beat of the bar. All the other notes and picking sound right to me.
