The residents of the Tall Trees Mobile Home Park in Fresno, California, most of whom were Mixtecos, an indigenous group from southern Mexico, discovered they were living on top of a federal Superfund site — a dump used for oil recycling. With help from California Rural Legal Assistance and the Binational Indigenous Front of Oaxaca, they negotiated a landmark agreement involving the residents, Chevron Oil, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and city and county government.
