My last comment was actually a p!ss take. Can anyone imagine if a hard house track dare start without 16 bars of a kick drum or something off beat? What's the point in making more hard house tracks? u may as well just pick any one of the tunes and loop it. Drum machines, synths and samplers were created to remove limitations to music, at some point the hard house scene might just realise that and then claim they created techno like they did with their 'electro' house genre!
i know hard house has become much broader than what it used to be, but it does not sound anything like this. ive never heard of data releasing a hard house track, and ive been listening to hard dance religiously for at least 10 years! however, name technicalities aside, it was a good video with good info :)
Then towards the end of the vid he says theres a part where theres `not much going on` hmmm well thats funny cause i can hear a Kick, 2 open hats, a closed hat, a clap, a snare, a lead synth, another lead synth, a bassline, an arpeggio, a vocal, not to mention reverb, delay, BBE sonic maximizer, compression, EQ etc etc etc. And guess what dumbass this NOT Hard House or Euro House this is Commercial Trance.

This guy hasnt got a fucking clue if he thinks Trance is an EASY style of music, but thats probably because of the cheesy wank he listens too, and no key changes? there are many tracks which contain a multitude of extremely advance key changes. Not only that but many tracks have extremely differant and varied structure. 'Close your eyes and imagine the crowd thinking yeah I like that sound' YOU COCKSHUFFLER!
i don't believe the future of dance music lies in the standard 8 bars beat stopping typical structured format it stinks and has been done to death and is only done for ease of churning out tracks as fast as possible and unfortunately is taught as the correct method of music creation
there should be no right and wrong this is rave and should never have been tamed
I think that blokes pretty safe as it goes. Hes just the sorta person I'd get along with as I love learning about all the different styles of dance music and how theyre structered. Only thing I can point out is that he shouldnt relate euro house so much with hard house as they are in actual fact 2 completely different styles. The choon he was playing by Orion Too was actually EURO TRANCE! I think theres a hard trance remix of that song which is absolutly superb.. cant be 100% sure tho! :-s
RE: thetreatment80, what the fuck are you on mate, like xavier425942 said, hes explaining the structure of hard house not tutoring anyone and even if he was theres plenty of people that cant mix so if you dont like dont watch it mate!

When the fuck are there rules in making music? All you "know-it-all-record collecting-music snobs" need to shut the fuck up and stop posting these "tuturials"!
Play what you like. Play what you feel. Make whats in your heart.
are you taking the piss? Its not rules you asshole he's explaining the structure of the music and not telling anyone not to listen to anything. Also J's tuts have helped many a Dj including myself. So unless you a rockstar Dj the likes of Tiesto shut the fuck up.
Not "taking the piss" at all rookie. No doubt J is an awsome dj but the best thing to do is listen to the records that YOU play and pay attention to intros, outros, breaks, measures, key changes, etc. Because songs that he may use as an example, may not be structured like yours. Not all house is structured the same. Not all trance is created the same. A structure doesn't exist when making music. Btw, thanks for the compliment:)
This track is uplifting trance, not hard house. Also, Trance has more going on in the music than what has been said. If one listens deeper into the track, other sounds and melodies are heard. Furthermore, the sound and melodies are created by a keyboard/synthesizer/midi, not by a drum machine. Drum machines create beats and rhythms. However having said that, there was still some good information provided.
Interesting comments but there are a lot of inaccuracies and there is NO WAY that that record he played is hard house! Orion is an alias of darren tate, a trance producer mainly. Although it would be a stretch to class that as trance, it could be argued that that record is either trance pop of eurodance. The word house, regardless of any prefix does not apply to that record. Certainly not if it's played at that speed anyway.
very gud tutorial lesson. the young and old beginners of today could learn something from that......gud work. The dust o the needle irritated me tho : )
I know , to me the real Hard house is the likes of relief records and dock martin stylee, and the like from the midd 90's, but as usual new styles come out and seem to take over the old
I really like the type with those simple saw, square, and triangle distortion leads... really electronic and corny, but I guess thats what happens when you're an electronic head hehe
I'm going to catch all your posts throughout this month. i really need the education because I hang out on AcidPlanet and I hear a lot of electronica and I want to appreciate the nuances.
how about a video on the structhre (spelling sorry) of modern up front and freeform hardore. its a bit more complex than hard house i think with more changes and often incorperaiting differant beat structures into 1 tune.
That's the worst documentary of the dam structure of hard house, euro house, electronica or wtf u call it....
Ur just showing up the breaks in the dam vinyl ... a 5 years old kid knows that omg ... try to speak about the number of beats till a new beat 4 compass's, 32 beats ... not that b*llshit.
You're a great teacher and these are fun, but this cheesy genre only gives house, and white people, a bad name! One deep Kerri Chandler track blows all of this power-synth-fluff away.
I also have 2 cats he he! Your videos are great mate! Keep up the good work! Good pieces of advice! Can u talk a little bit about trance in the future?

He was counting the bars, not the beats. They are different.
You can count bars via counting with the beats up to four. (I may be wrong)
1,2,3,4 bar 1
1,2,3,4 bar 2 and so on.
