The film deals with street gang warfare? That's like saying Jaws is a documentary on marine life. I love this movie, don't get me wrong, but realistic it's not.
You can't get fluid animation like that from a computer and have it appear seamless. All these opening bumpers were awesome and are WAY better than today's station idents. The HBO one was epic.
I remember watching this in New York in the 80's. It was a big laugh for those of us in the inner-city to see white people in gangs fighting around a bunch of blacks and Puerto Ricans.
Someone might think this odd, but I remember when I was little, thinking how when the movie would come on, how the network was "over" for the night. By that I mean of course, the shows that came on before the movie and as there was no other shows. And then sometimes how these movies, depending on what they were, sometimes would leave me feeling how it was such a big event and when it was over, thinking about the movie as I went to bed. You don't get that feeling from television anymore.
Regarding the movie, please stick with the original version; the remake is so phonied...Cyrus has some homosexual tendecy (a common theme in today's filmmakings) in him!!!
This ABC Sunday Night Movie was the best way for a kid to see some of the greatest movies ever made. They would show a shorter preview the night before (during Fantasy Island) to get me psyched up.
I recorded a lot of these back then (they showed many 007 films too) so I hope the Producers of this time slot at ABC were given proper compensation, because they helped shape many young minds that did not see these films during their theatrical release.
I can't believe this is here! OMG I was 13 yrs old when this aired. I waited 2 weeks for ABC to air this. This was so cool to see again. Thanks for posting this
It was all we talked about in school for the next week.We pretented to be in the different gangs, nobody wanted to be in the orphans."Hey we were 12 year olds"
These intros remind me of my mom telling me it's time to go to bed because I have school tomorrow, and me saying, 'but mommmm, can't i just watch for a little bit?".
Exactly, I hated this time of night as a child. When I saw this on abc and nbc's sunday night movie. My mother would always tell okay its time to go to bed. I would say Mom come on let me watch the first 15 mins. For a generation x'er this is the national time for bed time during those years.
@audest79 You had to go to bed early on a friday night? Man, that must have sucked. I grew up in the 70s and friday nights (even as a little kid) were more or less late night for me. if I got to stay up until 11:00 I was in high heaven.
@audest79 OMG...i almost peed when i read your post...i used to feel the SAME WAY!! espc when it was summer and it was light late..and the would make me go to bed...im 38 and its seems like yesterday!
@grenadianmed This aired on a Friday night. This was all I could think about that day at school.. aw man I couldnt wait to see it. I got sick that night after the movie.. I think cause I was so anxious.. :/
I remember this very same Friday night. I was 16, a high school junior, and hanging out with a sophomore. He mentioned knowing this movie was on and wanted to go home and watch it before doing anything else. We went home eventually, and I was surprised that my 50+ parents were watching it, which only strengthened their dislike of big cities. (This was in a small town in Oklahoma, by the way)
They need to bring this back in high definition with 5.1 surround sound.

@audest79 For me it was "It's 11 O'clock. Do you know where your children are?".
That was more of a local thing though, in the 70's - 80's. Irve Weinstine would say it on WNED-TV Ch 7 out of Buffalo, NY.

That is weird. This is from KOVR in Sacramento, and they probably didn't have the audio potted up when they went to network.
