@ajg822 Back then the UP poll was taken at the end of the regular season, the AP after the bowl games. So Bama won the UP at season's end, and then got whacked in the bowl game(Bear had a terrible bowl record) and the team they lost to won the AP. (in this case USC and Notre Dame).
So, Bama was really not the best team those seasons.
