It is sad to see so called Karateka's talking like this. It shows immaturity and naiveness. Otherwise how could any student of the art insult the art by passing such comments on Masters who hold a 10th dan. No matter what dan grades we achieve or what standards of perfection we display in performing Kata's, it has to be understood that with age and teaching experience spanning over 5 decades such masters have a great deal to offer and one has to be humble to receive it.
I like this performance of both kata very much, it is excellent! What you guys are talking about, are you crazy guys? You are talking bullshitt! This man is real and great master!
BudoacademyRussia... this is the most difficult kata of matsubayashi ryu.. and this is a very good performance. You guys don't know your Rohai. If only you did, you'd erase your comments in embarrasment.
Well the obvious difference here, is it is not Matsubayashi Ryu. If you had any knowledge at all about the style of Matsubayashi Ryu you would not have posted this video response. It does not come close to true Matsubayashi Ryu application. People, before getting on your soap box you really must learn to respect stylistic differences before commenting out of ignorance.
It is hard to comment on this video. Criticizing it would be a mistake. For me, it shows how important it is to be lucky enough to have the right instructor. It shows that, unlike Japanese rigid thinking of the past, the best person to pass on your spirit is not always your heir. What I have learned so far is that karate chooses you; you don't choose karate.
Takyoshi is pretty busy expanding Matsubayahi-Ryu, not enough time to be good at kata and expanding the style. OSensei was the same; not a bad thing at all. A master of a style does not indicate mastery of kata, but application thereof. The masters of kata you will rarely see because they are always in the dojo training!
He drops his fist before he punches; probably doesn't matter at his level but white belts are watching! Yasuharu Makishi is the best I have seen, ever. Never saw Seigi Nakamura but think he was great as well. How do you know he lost a lot of schools?
mwoolfs, Problem with many Martial Artist is they have never been in a fight. I can find mistakes on many. I have been to Okinawa many times & I can tell you I know I can hit many of the masters several times & not be touched by them, but if I get hit once, it is over. The person I train with has been living in US, he has made changes because when you are 5ft to 5.5 & 145 max & having to deal with 6.0 & over 200 & over you will make changes & know how to deal with my size. Takayoshi never fought
You are wrong sir. Takayoshi has more practical fighting experience than most of the masters. He worked for the US army in Okinawa. His role was to escort the MPs into the roughest areas of Okinawa to ensure the co-operation of some of the toughest and meanest Okinawans. During this time Takayoshi was often in real fighting situations (weapons included) .I have personally heard the stories from him and others.Don't believe all the negative propoganda you hear about Takayoshi. He's the real deal.
@21132867 One thing I have learned with 40 plus years in the martialarts,..the "masters" that dont have such "crisp" kata as a tournement player, is because they "fight" they are "fighters"......I dont question he can fight for a second... would he win a tournament w/that performance,...nope,...would he take out 1/2 the stadium tho ...yup ! with a bow I say "respect".......he is the real deal.
@ShorinRyuRonin if i recall correctly, young Nagamine had lived here in the States for a number of years.....and he did fight both in tournaments and also in a thing that is called dojo Arashi( Dojo Storming) due to legal matters the practice of Dojo Arashi is rare....it is when a person thinks their technique is stronger than the Dojo owners...they fight to see who gets the dojo....and young Nagamine does have the fighting credentials
@Specter1957, Not hard for an Okinawan trained Karateka to go around US & challenge weak instructors, I personally went to nearly three dozen school to find only a few I would train under & would not challenge. Takayoshi stopped training, he did not continue advancing as many others that are far more senior to him did. He is still a very accomplished Martial Artist & I am not here to take anything away from him, just his seminars are not that great.
I agree with SENSEICHIEF. Very bad technique to master this level, despite the fact that his father was one of the best masters of karate, and still is an example for the young masters of different schools.
He need to have more training before the show that kata. In this video (videoadd), the beginner master demonstrates Fyukyugata ichi, better than a Master who have 10 Dan , which has a lot of mistakes in the technique of karate.
p.s. Karate - an art for the real battle, not for show.
You guys need to show more respect for this great man. He has accomplished a lot of great things for Matsubayashi-Ryu all over the world. I would be willing to let your insult stand if you would have attended this seminar. But you did not. Get back to me when you have traveled the world to visit hundreds of schools and have to run a world wide association and feel the pressure of your father's legacy place upon your head. He showed outstanding bunkai at this seminar.

@senseichief True and I have seen a great amount of students of Takayoshi Sensei and many kids performing kata much better than Zenpo Shimabukuro Sensei
....i was just wondering where your "horrible technique" comment was coming from....because if you can do better then your are surely justified but if not then it would be courteous of you to at least give an apology to the highest ranking Matsubayashi shorin-ryu master at the moment as well as the son of Shoshin Nagamine the creator of the style

The way Nagamine Sensei is performing is for instructional purposes....in other words he's not using full speed or full power
