Like victorwasright said, there are many different sets of lyrics to this old and extremely popular song. The original version was by Joseito Diaz about a girl from Guanatamo, but the most popular lyrics simply refer to the comraderie of Cubans. There are many websites explaining the lyrics.

The best version is from the author Jose Marti. The one and only..... others just add whatever they want.....

Yeah, I think so, too. The say that Joseito sang the chorus originally, but when the song was done with Marti's poetry, it was so very powerful! I'm not even a Cuban and I can appreciate it.

Que equivocacion!!!! el que compuso La Guantanamera fue Joseito Fernandez, no Jose Marti y Joseito Fernandez fue el que mejor la canto y a el le decian El Re;y de la Melodia. Jose Marti no cantaba. Si no sabes lo que estas diciendo mejor no digas nada para que no confundas a los demas.
