You look (no offence) and sound like someone from Wexford in Ireland where I come from. The words used and intonation sound very similar to that of south-eastern Ireland.
Newfoundland was settled, especially in the Avalon area by people from Wexford/Waterford Ireland, about 70% of the people in Newfoundland are Irish on one or both sides of there family tree.
It sounds like someone from Ireland spent a couple years in Cornwall before living in Manchester for a couple years, spending another year or two in Yorkshire before moving over to Canada for the remainder of the years...
it is our god given right to bastardize words as we need to. Where I grew up in NL they say "we'm" - as in "we'm goin to the mall" - I assume it is a contraction of "we am." Bahahaha Bless our Newfie Hearts, eh bye?
@zaraki0912 Irish, british, french... blended. NL has 6 unique dialects. People from various UK regions can tell you that some areas in NL the people can pass for being from the UK rural areas no prob. We rock.
@bronaghmca that's because you're ignorant. He sounds a bit nervous and he is pointing out specific phrases and words so that sounds a little less natural, but otherwise he is dead on. I grew up there. He isn't faking. I am guessing you are probably american though... try traveling a bit instead of just what you see online or tv. Newfies have demographics from all over.... and we are a large part Irish.
@RampantArtist i wasn't saying that he was doing it wrong i was just saying that to me that's what it sounds like so calm your tits! and ACTUALLY i am irish so i know what a real irish accent is and to me this sounds like someone faking an irish accent! i'm just commenting on what the newfie accent sounds like.
I've met relatives of my kid's friends, who are fromNewfoundland. HOW CUTE!!! The one Grand dad! "LORD love me"!! I couldn't understand 3 words he was sayin', for frigg's sake!! I LOVE that diversity of Canada!
haha, this is sheer greatness! what kind of accent is newfie most like? is it scottish or irish? I can't remember.. I'm from BC, soo wish I lived there to have a cool accent ;]
@wantedrevolutionn I has a friend from BC, and she loves de newfie accents, to bits. it's more of an irish accent, exactly like it do, it you have a strong newfie accent. :)
