  • Supper helful as a new tortoise owner

  • u got a smart parts ion i see

  • Is it good if I use a powder vitamens for his food it's called Rep-Cal ones pink and blue or is it better using yours then the powder vitamens

  • Helpful video, thanks man.

  • wondering what the lifespan of this tortoise is.

  • I don't think Kale as well as other dark greens like mustar greens and chard are bad for tortoises because it binds calcium and does not allow them to absorb. Maybe you can post an update on what you think about this. Look it up.

  • I found this really helpful :) thanks!

  • thats how u say sulcatas. i was telling everyone im getting a sulcata tortoise but i wasnt saying it right lol

  • Cool stuff man thanks!

  • luv the vid!!! it helped alot!!!

  • hey i have 2 tortoise and one is Russian and a red footed tortoise do you think you give the same thing

  • could i feed my russian tortoise a small piece of a grape?

  • @aaavideos62

yes you can but not to much

  • I just bought a tortoise tonight. The lady told me it was a Sulcatta, but for some reason my mom seems to think that's wrong. Can you tell me how to differ ?

  • is it ok to feed them escarole?

  • my tortoise for some reason doesnt like the zoo med food, any suggestions?

  • awesome vid dude, any pointers on how to make the tortoise less "shy". whenever i put food infront of her she dont eat, every now and again i catch her eating when she thinks i aint looking but very rarely. is there anyway i can know if she is eating healthily? she is about 5 inches so quite old, i was given her so i am not sure if something happened.

any advice or pointers wil be greatly appreciated

  • @gluesniff3 I had a russian that didnt eat for months when I brought him home, I took him to the vet and everything and he just wouldnt eat. After about 6 - 8 months of not eating, I built him a huge outdoor cage in my back yard and he started eating in 2 days. Guess he just wasnt happy. I live in Florida though, I dont think many people have the option of using outdoor cages.

  • Thank you so much for all this great information. Great video :)

  • Well done sir, you know what your talking about!!!

  • great video I have two sulcata's and what you have shown in ur video is very informative im gonna buy that grassland zoo meds food too thanks for all the info

  • Hi, I realize this is a really old video, but I was wondering the ages of torts you're feeding with this? I have a baby Hermann's, a few months old, and I was told before (I had a Russian in the past that died of old age) that I shouldn't cut their food too much, because it helps wear the beak down and stuff when they have to tear it. Does that go by age? Breed? If you can answer, that'd be great. Good video, thanks!

  • what ran away the tortoises or the pellets? =]

  • I put the grassland tortoise pellet things in front of my tortoises and they run away. Any idea why?

  • Hey great video and good suggestions. My only advice is pointing out that this diet isn't good for ALL tortoises. It's good for Russians, etc. but is NOT recommended for grassland tortoises such as sulcatas who need exceptionally low protein and should be eating 70% grass. Kale and mustards have way too much protein to be fed on a regular basis to sulcatas.

  • @11wormbig

Where is the video of your sulcata? I'm going to disagree with your info there unless you have some sort of proof.

  • you know instead of that tortoise food that you put in.... would you be able to put crushed weetabix if it.... they are basicly just fibre lol

  • mine doesnt like to eat timothy hay, so i just use it as bedding lol

  • wish i was your tortoise

  • Dont know about you guys but.......Makes me hungry......

  • @WeWillNotRockYou1 same :P

  • your awesome

  • where do u get veggies if you don;t get it from the store

  • farmers markets sometimes have these but its rare. Just go to the grocery store its easier

  • i have a red foot tortoise would it be possible to overdo the calcium dust?

  • I should do that some day! thanks!

  • Thanx alot for posting is video, purchased a herman in jan. Been getting so much conflicting advice on a tortoise diet, do you still add a calcium supplement to this mixure or any more vitamins such as nutrobal? I was also advised to add BSP drops to the drinking water. Also confused about substrate, using 50/50 mix of top soil and sand. Any advice is really welcome.

  • I would add calcium. It would either be better for them, or it wouldn'tdo anything. So, I would.

  • how much do u feed a tortoise?

  • Your Best Bet Would be to put yourself in his shoes and guestimate how much he need by his size or whatever. You do NOT need to overfeed him though how much is that? Sorry I Don't Know =( Anyways Hope I Helped ( A Little)

  • This helped a lot thanks!

  • thank you SO much! :)

  • i have that zoomed food, and i have tried mixing it with collards, but my young sulcata refuses to eat anything, but romain lettuce or frozen vegies (which is horrible, I know) I normally just sprinkle a little phosphorus free calcium over it. I need to switch him to a better diet. please help. You can see him in my video "tortoise update 004" on my page.

  • Comment removed

  • thanx this will help my baby sulcata

  • actually, a sulcata's diet is slightly different than a russian tortoise's. Sulcata's need less protein in their diet - so less collards, mustards, lettuce, etc. They should eat 50-70% grass. Google the specific sulcata diet and you'll see how different it is.

  • thanks turtle , this will really help with crighton's sulcatta. keep up the good info!

  • this video was realy helpful. my tort seams to like it.

  • how much wud u feed that a day or in two days and can u feed carrots or r they high in protein

  • i willl get a russian tortoise soon

  • if anyone wants to know a toroise diet should be 75% leafy vegetables such as kale. 15% rooted vegetables such as carrots. and 10% fruits mainly because its like a dessert to them but u shouldnt feed them too much. xxx

  • i think bout 20cm but i do know that they whont get very big and thats what makes them great pets. same goes for russian tortoises and a bunch of otha ones

  • Im getting a herman 1 year old, any tips on the substrate and things?

Oh and is glass suitable for them?

  • glass=BIG NO NO lol build a 2 by 4 foot tortoise table out of wood google it. substrate could be baked (steralized soil) from your bakyard to kill the bacteria

im getting a hermann's torotise in feb. '09 when it gets warmer in my area. hope i helped anyone x)

  • Ok ty

  • glass IS fine, as long as plenty of room to roam. too many 'myths' surrounding vivs. Tends to be mostly a load of bullshit x

  • Lol thanks :)

  • that is a load of bullshit! vivs cause breathing problems because they cant ever cool down they need a cold spot not just a less cold spot!

  • Now listen carefully, FUCK OFF. understand? no? you don't seem to understand very much anyway do you. For the benefit of all creatures (great and small) keep away from them and refrain from harming them. Your stupidity worries me.

  • No he is right all glass vivs are terrible for tortoises respitory system because of stale air (you know what its like on a plane during a long flight ?) you want a tortoise table set up which allows better air movement, better humidity for most of the non tropical species and more room for the tortoise. No need to be so vitriolic

  • noo !! if it isn't well ventilated - then you get 'stale air', it really isn't that hard to keep the vivariums well ventilated (not with a draught). I suppose to some it may seem incomprehensible, but its actually not that hard to keep them well ventilated. By removing the roof/lid, and if a sliding door viv, open doors and make a barrier tall enough to be safe, but small enough to ensure air flow.

    See SIMPLESSSS !

  • Taking the lid off is the basic principle of the tort table .

I find that visible barriers work alot better than glass too which is why id go for the tort table

and you get more room for the animal for a lower cost .

  • Thanks for the vid. I have a russian tort but i dont know where to buy kale/parsley leaves/turip greens! Im a 13yr old and i love my tort alot, i feed her dandelions, some flowers which are for tortoises and lettuce! Any other foods which are high in calcium? Also, where did you get the zoo food thingey?

  • is this suitable for star tortoises? and the only type of calcium supplement i managed to get is in a liquid form to spray on the shell. but i've to feed 3 drops orally too so how can i do that?

  • is it alright if u use alfalfa grass instead of timothy hay?

  • great vid for the novice tortoise owners. so many people feed tortoises the wrong stuff. Good to see that you know your stuff mate.

  • hi could you use this on a leopart tort ?

    nice video A+

  • yep

  • i hade three tortoises, now i only have two coz i chopped ups some alfafa hay and a piece got stuck in her throat and split it

  • and i read that spinach was really bad cuz of oxalic acid. good video!

  • You really only need to cut the food up small when your animals is still small. Otherwise keeping the food whole makes for good enrichment.

  • HELLLL YAAAAAAAAAAA

  • lol dieara all over ur cage that made me laugh!

  • hi. i would like to know what is a better tortoise. a russian tortoise or a greek tortoise. i keep getting these rival messages that 1 is better than the other. i want a straight forward answer please. thanks

  • well both are about the same when it comes to care. i would get a russian though. thats what i have.

  • Ah ok, thanks alot for the help.

  • Hey I was just wondering how well a tortoise will do if it lives off of solely garden plants? I feed my tortoise vegetables etc, but it also seems to eat alot of the weeds and some other stuff aswell. Thanks.

  • grassland tortoises like sulcattas live solely on weeds, grasses and other high fiber things in the wild. so assuming that all of the plants in the garden are healthy and non toxic for the tortoise, it should be alright.

just make sure you provide correct supplmentation.

  • Yum where do you get hey and could you feed this to leopard tortoise.

  • you can pick up the hay at a petstore in the rabbit section.

and yeah, you can use this for a leopard tortoise

  • could you also put some repti cal in there?

  • yep

  • Mmmm. That looks delicous!

    (just kiddin)

  • lol yeah but it doesnt work with my mom. she said no to the 1st tortoise but i still bought him.

  • lol.

  • yeah I'm going off this video lol. I'm getting another Russian possibly this week. got to convince my mom.:(

  • haha the great convincing saga.

  • hey nice video man. I have a video request on you making a movie of clean up and setting up your tortoises home. also show him being cleaned and feeding. I need to change everything for my tort.

  • well thats quite the request. lol.

i will when the time for cleaning comes though!

  • alright sweet thanks...Im going to change his diet and what his substrate will be. lol

  • alright cool.

are you going off of this video? if so.. hooray! lol

  • are those tortoises fun to have and can u hold them as much as u can hold ball pythons?

  • i love mine!

tortoises don't like to be held.

some will interact with you and recognize you as it's keeper but it depends on the individual.

  • thanks dude it helped alot

  • i'm glad it did.

  • hey i have a hermans tortoise im putting up a vid u should watch it

  • okay when i find time i will.

  • is this ok for hatchlings?

  • yep.

  • so how much does turtle cost?

  • oh. i got my russian tortoise for 40$.

they will cost about 60 or more though.

  • wait 1fast question how much do they cost?

  • i usually get all my greens at 13 dollars and it lasts me about 2 weeks.

  • kk sweet thanks for info dude =D

  • no problem.

  • yea im geting a Toroise but not sure witch one but can i buy the Kail,Pars Leaf,Turnup leafs from a super store or langly farm? oh and can i buy Timithy hay at the pet store?

  • i buy from a superstore. you can get the hay at the petstore yes.

  • so you feed your turtle that much a day becuas im geting a turtle next day so just thought i should know or will pet store guy tell me how much to feed him

  • i feed as much as he will eat.

this is about a bowl a day.

what kind of turtle are you getting?

  • does this work for deserts

  • i am not familiar with the desert tortoises diet so i couldnt tell you. sorry

  • Probably yes, but desert tortoises are accustomed to high fiber, low nutrition diet. You should add more grass (hay) into it...

  • Hmm... What you didn't seem to consider was the structure of the food. U chop it into tiny little pieces, so that the tortoise could easily just swallow it, without using it's beak. Ever heard of parrot beak? It happens to tortoises when they haven't got enough stuff to chew and bite. It's better for the tortoise to leave the leaves unchopped, and perhaps only chop the hay (weed?) if they otherwise wouldn't eat it :P

Gives your tortoise some biting work to do, and prevents parrot like beak.

  • dont i cover this in the video?

  • nice video.

  • thanks much.

  • Hey great video!

if anyones interested in asking about if this is find for other tortoises then yes, it can be fed to hermanns, greeks, russians, sulcatas, leopards, marginates, and basically all tortoises!

Again great video! i use a similar method when feeding tortoises, i just dont use hay =]

  • thanks you very much cpx.

i was hoping for your approval. haha.

  • So I can use this for my greek tortoise too?

  • im not sure about greeks you may want to check and see. i dont see why not though.
