I'll take a slightly contrarian view. Yes, it's an excellent shot. But his lie, while bad, doesn't really look inpossible. He was able to get the wedge under the ball. And if he'd missed the cup, he might have had 10-15 back, and in those days Watson was pretty deadly from that range. So he would still have been tied, and birdie on the last hole would have given him a one-shot win instead of two.
@bus114..its very easy to duff that in that lie!phil mickelson had a similiar lie in the hsbc champions in 2009, and he went right underneath it and missed the ball completely! its hard to judge these lies. and yes even if he made a par, he would have had a 1 shot lead but remember havin a 1 shot lead in the final hole of a major is no gimmy! esp. when up against a nicklaus or tiger!!! not disagrreing with ur view just sayin.... i completely respect ur view.
@shawnwave You make good points, and I respect your view as well. Isn't that weird? Two people being respectful to each other on Youtube! That's so rare that I think the world may come to an end. :)
why you say it's lucky, I think you didnt look it correctly, he analyse the green, he execute perfectly and it goes in, not lucky. See how he prepared his shot and you will see that he wasnt lucky
I really thought the man was going to do it. I NEVER watched golf until Watson did what he did at the British Open. Now...well, I can't wait for the Masters! :-D
@dcbandnerd it will be one hell of a year for majors. the opens being at pebble and the old course. Tom watson comes to me as more a links player than an agusta guy and tiger is stealing the show anyway with his comeback. will be an awesome masters like allways tho
I'm reading the book about Bruce Edwards, Watson's caddy, and apparantly he told Bruce he was going to make it. When he points after he made it he is telling Bruce "I told you I would make it!" What a great moment in golf.
I didn't see this as I only started watching majors in 84. I wish he'd used an iron on the final round of this year's Open. Maybe we could have seen a repeat of 82 and a nice victory dance round the 18th!
You simply don't understand the difficulty of this shot.!!!!!!!!
Chipping the ball out of heavy rough on a steep downward slope to a higher elevation onto a fast green with the cup positioned close to the side he's shooting from, and under pressure to win the us open.. This shot is more difficult than hitting a hole in one at a par 3.
golfnut007, this is one of THE greatest moments caught on video in ALL of sports - and one of the greatest in the history of golf!! where were you able to get this?? the great tom watson is from the kansas city area, like myself, and i've been to several of his golf clinics for charity where he brings in several greats annually. five stars!!
Actually, I found it on the U.S. Open website a couple years back. They had a spot where they posted memorable moments vignettes from a bunch of past U.S. Opens. I have uploaded a few to Youtube. They may still be one the site of you check it out.
thanks! for some reason, this great shot and still pic's of it have been very protected by the usga. i recently found a set of stills of this segment made into a picture which is very pricey!
@golfnut007 This and Sandy Lyles second shot from the bunker at the 72nd hole at the 1988 Masters - are the two greatest shots in the last round of a major championship in history
@virginiatechfanx That's so laughable! You must not really understand the true meaning of sport. I have played golf since high school, along with other several other 'sports'. It is as much a sport as any other. You should try it sometime and see how 'easy' it really is, VTfanx.
I was there!!!

There are way too many variables and factors that influence everything you do on the golf course.

Golf is without a doubt the hardest sport to learn.

I remember watching this live on TV in UK (about 1 am I think).
I was cheering and dancing round the room waking the neighbours, lol.
One of the greatest moments in sport EVER!

lucky shot?

@b0x3 Watson actually 'called' the shot, telling his caddy Bruce Edwards he was "going to make it". Skill and practice increase 'luck' tremendously.

From books that I have read, Tom Watson is a very nice and genuine down to earth man. His caddy Bruce Edwards was also the same way. Rip Bruce.

i wanted to cry when he missed that 8 footer at turnberry in '09. He can still place in majors at age 59... incredible

Easily one of the greatest shots in golf history. Watch the story and learn the technique from Pebble Beach on Great Shots by GolfLink.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Larry Mize's chip in the '87 Masters was better. Hell, I'd put that ridiculous chip Tiger made in 2005 on 16 above this shot.
