  • Why do people compare games like Mario to CoD in the first place? They are two totally different games. Both of them are good in their own way. I don't like CoD that much, myself, but it's still a good game. I can really enjoy playing CoD with a friend in the evening for a couple of hours once upon a time. But I play games like Mario and Zelda all day. In my opinion they are a lot better, because of the storylines, sidequests, levels and of course the music. But just stop comparing these games.

  • I remember the eel in this level. The most hilarious thing is that every time I saw it, even after I knew it was coming out, I would jump every fucking time, frickin' bugged me. Good times.

  • THAT FUCKING EEL.

  • Hey Eel from Mario 64 how ya doing! Hey Eel from New Super Mario Bros, pretty good, I just ate a big lunch! Whaddid ya have? I was chasing after an Italian man in a red hat, but he got away. What did ya eat instead? Four people, and they deserved it. Why? They disliked my underwater theme!!!

  • Mission 2: Can the Eel come out to play?

    Eel sound effect: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • *goddamn eel* I'm still scared of him.

  • *sniff* *sniff* NOSTALGIAAAA. Give me the good games instead of COD any day! You cant seduce me to the Xbox360! *sob* *sniff*

  • Hate the level, love the song!

  • The second this song dropped = nostalgiagasm..

I would pay a decent chunk of dough to get a soundtrack to this game!

  • @ZachJamesFriend I agree. Mario 64 was just, jaw dropping. It set the standards for modern platformers IMO. Ocarina of Time set the standards for RPGs.

The music, as well, for Mario 64 was just... wow. This song in general, gives a sense of awe. Awe sounds more heavenly than awesome. This is like pulling the sword out of a stone, the glorious feeling of woah.

This song is beautiful. :p I remember playing this when I was like, 2-3. One of my first games, but Earthbound was my first.

  • i love earthbound!! xp.

  • the level is not so bad, compare to some really annoying ones from other games

  • i hate water levels.

    this is an exception.

  • When I hear this, I close my eyes, and think back to the days when I would sit on my father's lap and play this with him... *sobbing* THANK YOU MARIO 64

  • I used to hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE this song, just because of the world it was used in. UNDERWATER LEVELS! DAMN YOUUUUU!!!

  • I wish I could play this game... Except all the save files are completed, 120 Stars.

  • Love the song, hate the level. XD

  • @BetsyCat me too

  • Thumbs Up if Nintendo will Always be the King of Videogaming! Mario, Zelda, DK, Metroid!

  • @psychoshaneo true dat! =)

  • A friend brought his 64 over to my house once when he stayed the night with this game thats how I ended up falling in love with N64 sometime I wish I could experience it in its prime I would take Mario 64 OOT over COD. To be honest I prefer TF2 Call of Duty is just a flamefest

  • At least the good music makes up for the fact that the underwater levels in this game aren't very fun in my opinion.

  • when this started i felt as though i was just 6 or 7 again :')

  • Sigh...90's games were soo much better then the stuff we have today

  • w ww. rainym ood .co m

^ Go there, and play this. Absolutely stunning, breathtaking, i'm flawless.

  • w ww. rainymood .co m

^ Go there, and play this. Absolutely stunning, breathtaking, i'm flawless.

  • I remember when everything wasn't FPS...just Goldeneye and Perfect Dark...then came 2007...CoD after 4 is just fucking shovelware. Remake, release, congratulations, your a millionare!

  • Going back to the 90s, it seemed Mario was everywhere.

But now, we have xbox and playstation.

I want to go back to my childhood, and never leave.

  • @MrGamernerd24 and yet, Mario is still everywhere :D

  • *Talks to very famous scientist*

    Me: Time Machine, START BUILDING!

  • I'd rather play this game that stupid black ops

  • my brother told me this was my first mario game i ever played i still play it on my n64

  • If your in water and you think your going to drown...think of this music.

  • the funny thing is: i dont think Koji Kondo was ever the one who composed the super mario 64 soundtrack :P

  • Used to go to this level and leave my N64 running all night just to sleep to this.

  • Oh, fucking yes.

Super Mario 64 was the first game I have ever played, and it was the first videogame I'd ever beaten. This song makes me nostalgiagasm.

  • mario IS in amovie, so its kinda funny when you think about how Luikiti follows him when you use glitches or fool around...what no cut scenes?

  • I would just sit and listen to this and not move mario an inch. =)

  • can the eel come out to play?

  • This is so moving, and indescribably beautiful.

  • Thumbs up if this makes you wanna go back in time again. :(

  • @NubeAndNuber

When the main goal in your life was getting 120 stars and beating Bowser...

    :'C

  • @Klaamlml When your main activity was riding bikes with friends, until they moved... :C

  • @NubeAndNuber Quick lets steal the Epoch from Crono and go back in time

  • @NubeAndNuber </3 I miss the old days :(

  • personally i find this more relaxing:

    /watch?v=iTFgYfe3GBA&feature=related

  • i cant decide wich is beter, this or the file select

  • Gives me Chills

  • watch?v=lVC7kfqZwGw

    Music sound familiar? ^^

  • agreed to the fact that this music is suppose to be relaxing, but next to it is that you have to keep an eye out for quite some things in this part, now not to mention that after the first time there, you will have to defeat bowser >.<

  • ...I almost cried when I heard this again... I used to play this game when I was really little (as I'm sure many have)... This level scared me though. ._. But the music...oh...the beauty... I need to play this game again...

  • @KhaosBlender My friend and I pulled it out again, and remembered that we still only have 119 stars...It's an amazing game, but we (my friend and I) suck at it now. It's funny...even now, this game is really complex and has amazing depth of play and such an open environment. Beautiful game, beautiful music. Definitely, definitely worth playing again.

  • Brings me back to being at my old babysitter's when I was younger, I used to play this game before we got ready for the bus. I sucked at it, but I always loved playing. Dire Dire Docks and I had a love-hate relationship. Love because of the music and the beauty of the scenery, hate because of that goddamn eel.

  • ahh when nintendo still gave a shit about the quality of thier games, oh those were the days..........

  • HOW DOES EVERYBODY NOT KNOW THAT THIS IS THE SAME SONG USED IN ONOTHER LEVEL IN SUPER MARIO 64??????

  • check out ashane & norgs remix of this song it's absolutely epic

  • Whenever I played SM64 I would avoid this level, because I was scared of two things:

    1) Drowning

    2) THAT HUGE $@#!ING EEL

  • @Dxthegod I find the Eel cute

  • i remember almost falling asleep to this before

  • This song is the definition of Nostalgic for me, makes me want to shed a tear ;)

  • I like how the music of this builds depending on where you are in the stage :-) I for one find it very soothing and appropriate for the stage. And of course the chorus-piano lead is p. awesome too.

  • @AgentDC76 Something I forgot to mention, the concept of changing and layering of the music depending on where one is in the stage was copied by the MMA/RPG game Hybrid Heaven, to a point. I like that game's music too, but there aren't any tracks in that game that compare to this.

  • Super Mario 64 had a lot of great music, but it was this one that I first learned on piano from that game. Sure, I may have learned the main theme and final bowser fight, but it's Dire Dire Docks that is absolutely beautiful.

  • Super Mario 64... the first console game I ever owned and played through to completion... gee, that takes me back ten years, and it's been a good ten years. Music like this makes me remember how awesome those days were, first discovering the amazing world of video games. Whenever I select "New Game", I remember my first new game from back then, and this sure brings back fond memories of that time.

  • im 16, and i still remember all the good times i had with my n64; i remember struggling through gym leader castle to beat blue in pokemon stadium, saving hyrule from the clutches of ganondorf in Oot, and saving termina in majora's mask, even trying to beat my highest score everytime i played starfox 64. those, my friends, were the good old days with classic games that would forever be engraved in our memories.

  • This song could be used to brainwash kids.

Heck, it probably brainwashed me... into obsessing over Nintendo.

  • If you listen to it for long enough, It kinda sounds mesmerising...

I'm just putting that out there.

  • I wish I could swim to this music forever!

  • why...why did i get a ps1 instead of an n64 for my first system?

  • @Zeldafan37059 I totally agree with you.F**k Sony, not just for stealing the crowd, but for BLATANTLY ripping off the Wii!!!!!!!!!!!!But I have respect for Microsoft,NOT for making Halo, but for making the Kinect =P

  • Comment removed

  • @Th3Skull3r You haven't Mario Galaxy 2 OR 1 then.

  • I'm 14. Fuck, Halo, CoD, GoW, GTA, and all that crap. Give me my N64 with OoT, Super Mario 64, Kirby 64, and Majora's Mask. Also, fix my SNES so I can play A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, and Super Metroid. The current consoles suck in comparison to the retro gods.

  • @marigimaster YES FINALY SOME ONE LIKE ME i hate those new games there all about war what happened to the classics like mario, sonic, legend of zelda, and crash bandicoot every one turns them down but i wont stand for that NINTENDO FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Zeldafan37059 Wow. Someone else who knows how I fee. I love Nintendo. same with Sega and the PS1/PS2 Sony games but Microsoft never appealed to me.

  • @marigimaster Fuck yeah!!! 14 as well, you're the one of the only people I know who think that way, you are just awesome.

  • @GeniusGamer330 Thank you sir. However, there are more among us. They just don't have the balls to come forth on Youtube.

  • this game in its entirety, music, graphics, game design, for me DEFINED what the difference between a 3 dimensional and a 2 dimensional game should be.

And that it to immerse the player in the environment of the character. 3-D games should allow and encourage the exploration that 2-D games simply cannot bring.

And that is why this game is better than "teh kewl new wii mario gaemz!"

Because no matter how pretty, and how well designed the linear levels are. You still go in a straight line: 2D

  • Epic.WIN.you must be a halo fanboy to dislike this.however i like this generation of rock and metal, mostly Crush 40,this pwns.

  • @TrueTubePoops I can't agree with you more.

  • Man, if I had my hands on my cousin's N64...

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... (that was a relaxing ahhh)

  • Fuck the person that disliked this.

  • I really love this theme... *sigh* this really makes me feel nostalgic and I'm not that old -_-

  • When I first heard this theme, I was blown away at how calming and peaceful this was and thought to myself, "Why did I never realize how wonderful this was before?" It' s so fitting for a mainly underwater level: it gives you imagery of floating endlessly in a deep blue, undisturbed lake... and that's kind of what the level is, if you think about it.

  • Gosh, I loved this level and I'd stay in one spot in the game sometimes just to hear that music. It's so pretty. :D

  • if nintendo still had RARE, they would have made a better console possibly then the wii and plus tons of better games

  • @ShadyJeff2014

Actually, its more so Nintendo's 3rd party. Seriously, who the hell would buy M&M Racing, or Power Punch? (Punch Out! ripoff)

  • this song makes me cry because the game is so old and good...WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH sorry, i had to let that out

  • Ah, I still know how to play this song on piano after all these years. Vibraphone + Fantasia synth + slow strings = win.

  • should be in super mario galaxy 2

  • this was my very first video game. and this is the greatest song in the game. why didn't you put it in your top ten mario songs?

  • I love this theme, especially the part with the percussion. It remains calm, but also possesses a more vibrant energy, like adventure

  • so beautiful and peaceful :)

  • awsome..... nothing more to say

  • What i don't get is though is that this song is on jolly roger bay which you can go to before dire dire docks, but everyone relates it to dire dire docks, i havent played mario 64 for a while so if its obvious don't be an ass.

Is it the fact that the drums come in or do they do that in jolly Rodger bay too?

or is it that you have to play dire dire docks to get to the second bowser fight?

  • @striekthehegehog I think (I could be wrong, this is just a guess) it might be listed in the OST as Dire Dire Docks.

  • this game was so magical when i was a kid and played it though the stage sucks nintendo no one likes underwater levels

  • Best song on this game....

  • wow...........You gotta love this song.......

  • ah i could go to sleep listening to this infact i have

  • @blackdoom2009

    Me to :)

  • i can imagine me sitting on a pool raft in an indoor swimming pool with the water reflecting on the walls. Ahhhhhhhhh..... i wanna do that!

  • Wow. I honestly never realized how great the music in this game is until now. I love this piece. Thank you.

  • Beautiful, but also sad. The levels this song would play in would depress me so much, but it would also inspire me. I don't think the sadness of this song would change if it was switched from a foggy lake to a bustling city; it's that powerful. 10/10 Hands down.

  • I only played Mario 64 on the DS remake and I STILL feel nostalgia.

    This song is so moving.

  • same here xD

this song simply rules! i love the soft sound of it, its fitting for such an awesome level

  • To tell you the truth, this music is never calming to me. Quite the opposite. This music scares the crap out of me. Why? Because It reminds me of the damn timer when you go in the water, the eel, and falling into Bowser's trap when first entering Dire Dire Docks.

  • @CMDmusic i suppose but it still makes me happy

  • A real gentle '90's groove, complete with an electric piano!

  • Heh. It is beautiful. But, oddly sad too. Thus the reason I tended to hurry through dire dire docks as quick as I could when I was little.

  • Oh God, yes. Easily my favorite song from SM64; none of the others come remotely close. It's just so...tranquil. I've always had a soft spot for this one.

  • hay peanut I request that u put up bomb-omb battle field from this same game

  • Wow...reading these past comments, it proves that video games are good for you! I mean, would you have such deep discussions about something like math?

    GO MARIO!

  • I fell asleep while in this stage and i drowned

  • 30/10

  • 9/10 people, this is classic(but you knew that so why should i tell ya?)

  • I listen to this song as I meditate. It works perfectly...

  • OMG THIS IS THE 3rd best peice ever, this game was epic too

  • awesome meter 9/10

    peace

  • Request:Super Mario 64 Credits

  • this shouldv been on the most moving songs of all time

  • i miss Nintendo so much.

    T__T

  • this song is beautiful. i cry listening to this. and its in a nintendo game. no surprise that it is amazing.

  • First nintendo game ever!

I didnt know how cool was this back then.

  • first nintendo game ever? XD

  • I was six when I played this game, and this play scared me the most just at the underwater ship part, but other than that, music is awesome.

  • I was scared of the eel when I was a kid >.>

But now, since I'm older, after listening to this song, I just wanna HUG the eel now.

    "Let's be friends!"

    Eel-"Hisssssssssss.....STOP TAKING MEH STAR!"

    "Oops!" ^_^

  • when i was younger, if we had a test at school or if i was stressted out (sometimes for no reason at all) i would always turn on the game and go to that lvl just to listin to it. That way, i had it stuck in my head and i wouldnt feel stressed for awhile. Honest to god, i still do that. Also helps the imagination flow. I really wish there were more songs like this in modern games, most of the time i hear those rock (and the like) songs. What happend to the beautiful ambience in music?

  • i think this is that was best comment to b said about this tune, that just brings out my nastalgia even more, this reminds me wen my fav game (wave race) was stolen wen my house got broke into. i listened to this song and cryed.

  • Actually, now that you said that (and this may have nothing to do with your comment.) but, i do feel a sense of sadness at the beginning of the song and the more you listen to it brings an upbeat tune. Sorta like you found this new place and youre confused or scared of what to do, but you shouldnt be. Because, whats better then a new adventure or just the excitement of whats coming up next? But, thats my opinion. This song has a different story for everyone; much like yours.

  • that is very similar to how i feel, most of my feelings r 2 complex to explain, its just that things were much easier back then, i was 2 young to go to school when i played this game so i had no hard work or any worries at all, i could just be myself and not have to worry about being jugded. I think the producers of the theme knew people would have hard times in their life, so made it a little upbeat at the end to remind them its all okay. this is that kind of song that makes u think about life.

  • @skelami I know What you say man,But tha generation is gone :'(

  • @skelami I know, this is a song that calms even me down, and im a metal fan

  • @Lordlucario21 me too.

  • other music that almost equals this song, is the Pokemon League in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, day or night, it makes me wanna sleep...just like this song does to me xD

  • now I wasn't born on the same generation as the other mario fans there, I'm only 13, where when you talk of video games, we talk about COD, GOW, Halo, and the like, but no nintendo... I myself believe that nintendo is the best gaming company ever, it's a legend, yet sadly I don't experience what people call nostalgia, what is it? sorry I am no american so can someone please help me out here?

  • I'm even younger than you, but I know what nostalgia is. It's sorta like when you just did some thing that you had good memories from, and how you feel, wll, nostalgic. Sorry if that didn't make sense, but I'm not very good at explaining things.

  • I was pretty sure I replied to this once before...

Nostalgia: 1: A wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life.

2: A sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time.

  • im only 14 and not exactly sure wat nastalgia is but im pretty sure it has something to do with reminising memories. this theme does give me memories, i might get my 64 out just 2 play. ur right about the halo thing, i got in an arguement with my friends about if i should get a wii or a 360, im getting the wii but they were saying i was stupid.

  • i personally prefer the xbox 360, but you're totally entitled to your opinion. i hope they make another super mario like this on the wii, though :)

  • its ok if someone prefers another system, i just disliked how they were calling me dumb and kinda teaming up on me so i changed the subject and we went and played on the trampoline.

and i also hope for that :P

  • @smbz821 nostalgia is the feeling that you have done it many times before and yet you still have that feeling you want to do it all over again. Believe me I hate it when kids talk about Halo and COD and all those war games that they shovel on to next-gen systems. I love the classics and believe Nintendo was and is the greatest, no matter what the idiotic children of today play. I know first hand- I am 11 years old...

  • @TrueTubePoops Someone knows their vocabulary and their deductive reasoning. Good form man, I cannot agree more.

  • @smbz821 I think I can understand. I'm around your age and I know what you mean. Nostalgia, as you wished to know, is the sentimental affection one gets when recalling their past. Most people refer to Mario games as nostalgic because they were kids when Mario was popular and have fond memories of it now. Plus, just because your not American doesn't mean you can't be able to understand this. We are all equal.

  • I'm sure you'll experience nostalgia in some way shape or form in the future, only it will be in a form that will accommodate you.

  • @smbz821 exact same with me

  • @smbz821 Nostalgia is a type of feeling when you want to play something over or do something over again...like a good feeling

  • @smbz821 Maybe try getting SM64DS or SM64 on Wii Virtual Console. And DON'T sell it like I did... I still regret it. Gonna get the game for my R4 now..

  • @smbz821 same thing for me

  • @smbz821 i'm only 13, played all systems, and played most originals

  • @MinkzxtheGreat YAY, a kid with a brain

  • @smbz821 i'm happy that someone from the new generation knows of nintendo's great power. I'm 18, and i grew up on Mario and nintendo. nostalgia is when you see something that brings back memories, like for us, pokemon red and blue, mario 64 and the original metal gear. things like that.

  • @smbz821 Yeah right.

  • @smbz821 its when you look back and remember the good times. something like that. I don't know though

  • @smbz821 I'm also 13 and I have to say that I can't agree with you more.

Like for an example, if you ask todays teenagers about videogames, most of them would talk about those games like GTA and all that. It's sad really. Because they don't know how videogames started at the first place. Back then, nobody thought making a game where you could be the bad guy. And today, it seems like a trend, a bad trend.

I'm not american either so my grammar is surerly bad so excuse me. :)

  • @smbz821 Well said

It's all i hear about anymore CoD GoW and All these new games

when all i want to do is pick up my N64 controller and play some mario

beautiful game dont know why people dont like it anymore

  • @smbz821 You will one day, my friend. Probably about COD, GOW, Halo, and the like. But sadly, not Nintendo so much. Nostalgia is the sweet, sweet feeling you get when you relive your most cherished childhood memories. It really is great, but be careful. It can warp your opinion on newer things, making you say, "That shouldn't be that way, it should be like I remember it."

  • @DarthKain0 What you said there is totally correct. I am 14 and I too feel the same as smbz821 feels. But we still have a problem here. There are a bunch of other little 13 year old shits who like to call any game that isn't on the PS3 or Xbox 360, doesn't have blood, swearing, sex, HD graphics, looks cartoony or pre-2009 "GAY"!!! Could someone please define the word GAY again means I forget T_T

  • @Spagettieater9000 I've seen this problem, tried to remedy it. It never works out well. Those who act this way cannot be cured, for it is too late for them. I pity them to no end.

  • @smbz821 same for me, I'm trying to take back some of my missed nintendo experience thought.
