  • stimo questi due grandissimi ARTISTI, ma perche in questa occasione non mi piacciono ? mi sembrano affaticati ...mah

  • They were both tall and good looking - greatest couple of the opera.

  • There is a special magic that occurs when these two great artists sing together.

You just don't hear that kind of singing in the theater today.

  • You are right andante.

After many years, the "bloom" is off my tenor rose, too.

All I do is bark now LOL

  • Good lord,

Think should be replaced by thing and the bloom was off the Tebaldi Rose by then, but what a great artist she was

  • Get a load of that wig and those earings.

I heard Tebaldi sing this in the early 70s at the Met

  • You just have to love those wigs - but she carried it off! How amazing to see and hear such operatic royalty!!

  • You are right, Andante.

Think was that I was about 18 when I heard Tebaldi sing this at the Met. The rose was off the Tebaldi, yet I realize now how great she was.

Their voices were huge in the theater.

    Things are sure different now.

I held the curtain at the Met in the early 70s. What an experience

  • The way I look at it is, for any truly legendary artist, even when the "rose is off", there's still enough left to hear and appreciate what was. In the case of Tebaldi, what many people don't realize is by 1973 she'd been singing just over 25 years. The voice was not intact, but the huge sound, beauty of tone, legato phrasing, and the uniqueness were still in evidence. Listen to Callas and Di Stefano during their recital tour in the early 70's - did anyone really care?

  • They were who they were. Just try and find one singer today who can even "touch the garment" of those singers, or sound like they did after 25 years of singing at age 35

A horrid herd of colorless, generic, musically inept fools who wouldn't know what singing really was if it hit them in the face. It's a shame; it's a disgrace, and it's disgusting. People like Peter Gelb should be tarred, feathered, and left out to dry.

  • Andante - I agree totally with you about Peter Gelb, except instead of being tarred, how about a public stoning???? LOL

Overall, I believe singers of today will have short careers. They may look good on HD and have pretty voices, but they can't sing!

Check out Corelli at the Bing Gala singing Otello with Zylis-Gara in 1972.

  • I think we're both being to kind actually. Maybe the Mussolini treatment - hung upside down and beaten. Oh, I know all about the '72 Gala. I remember my brother bringing home the recording. I think I listened to Nilsson's closing Salome at least 25 times that day. With the exception of Florez, and sometimes Fleming, it's dead and buried. I haven't been to the Met since 1987 - now you know who you're dealing with.
