Ezio is to Assassin's Creed what Solid Snake is to Metal Gear Solid. Even though Altair was the first protagonist, Ezio has become the face of the series. Plus, Ezio is the closest thing Ubisoft has ever had to a flagship character, similar to what Mario is to Nintendo or what Mega Man is to Capcom.

@mesepotamian Ezio was actually secretly trained to be an assassin his whole life by Giovanni (his father.) Giovanni taught him basic use in swords, weapons, and fighting. He also learned free running. But, before Giovanni could tell Ezio about the assassin order or why Ezio learned these things, he was killed. Eventually Ezio learned more in the way of swords from his Uncle Mario and from the Codex pages. I hope than answers everything. I tried to sum it up for you.
