I'm a Croat skeptical of joining EU but you're just wrong.

The Croatian state was created by anti-fascist, gender-equal partisans during WW2. It joined a multi-ethnic federation of southern Slavs lead by a Croat.

We ceded the Yugoslav federation peacefully after democratic elections and a referendum.

The war started when a militia of ethnic *Serbs*, backed by the Yugoslav army - commanded by a *Serbain* president, killed a Croatian cop - another ethic *Serb*.
