  • What are the limits of this little bugger?

  • He looks like snape

  • ...and they are SLOWLY knocking them out. How basic can a device get yet they are milking it. Mass produce them already ffs

  • its only for kids :(

  • besides the price and the casing: what are the differences to the cotton candy from FXITech (w w w . fxitech . com/products/) ?

  • @oybeutu GNU hackers, granted - not crackers.

  • Plug it into a remote control device and fly/drive it. You know those videos where they send a balloon in the stratosphere with cheap materials and a cheap digital camera? I would like to see someone use this to pilot one further. I'm sure that there are lots of things possible with this that we haven't thought of. Maybe they should promote the creative use of these things with a CONTEST. Best creative-use wins a scholarship.

  • can you sex it?

  • Give to kids. Create hacker army.

  • @oybeutu in my school were getting these i think

  • Jpgmag dot com/photos/3280068

  • it may not have alot lot of memory on it

  • i want to find investor to create computer something like this more inovative with more functions and to earn a lot of money after selling

looking for investor my email : lodanas@mail.ru mobile phone +37368129129

  • I am gonna buy one and see how arch linux runs on it :P quite excited tbh

  • how many tv/monitors have hdmi ? not a lot

  • @phantomhacker90 erm... most do.

  • @phantomhacker90 Every new HD Tv has HDMI I mean I see 50" TV's for under £400 these days you only need a 20" Tv thats HD you do the math...

  • @Xanekos well many people i know don't have tv's with hdmi ports

  • @phantomhacker90 All tvs/monitors post 2008 or so. But you're right, if the kid can't afford a computer, maybe he can't afford a recent monitor?

Or the school as well. But it's hard to say. It depends.

  • Can i watch porn with it?

  • Raspberry Pi is so cheap because it cheap to be made, they could easy over price it but they are not doing that, smart!!!. ipod/iphones are over price, they are cheap to make, labour is so cheap, apple is making million, billions of dollars for something cheap, the technology is out there but they want to charge us 100X more, their way of making extra money. plus we all buy it, gives apple a reason not to lower their products prices. apple is just one example of many others companies making mone

  • @DreDiego thats what business is about profit duhhh you have just realised that if you think there overpriced just buy one on ebay

  • nice little thing

  • Let's do a ram upgrade um ...oh

  • WHY IS IT OOOO CHEAP ??

  • Is this the size that the finished product will be?..

    If so, nice. !!

  • @ugforthewin no, it a bit bigger now, about the size of a credit card, but it's much more powerful

  • @Jack14112 Ahh cool - thanks for the info mate.

  • My Dad bought me a ZX Spectrum+ in the early 80's and it enthused me enough to program Basic...not to mention be a whizz on Chequered Flag.

My son is definitely getting one, where can I but it?

Plus this is one in the eye for another fruit based company (the one with no core) that is trying it's best to create a walled garden and other's try and follow....

Plus Plus it's made in Britain.

loving the door opening @1.46 !

  • I am a 13 year old kid, I know 1 programming language (java), and I think this is great, if they are given to kids at school, it would really improve ICT, goodbye learning excel, hello making our own!

  • @Handuel13

    You describe me..

  • @Handuel13 I doubt that will ever happen.. in Germany, the reason Java is taught in high schools at all is simply because they deemed C to be too scary for students. In the end, we geeks always end up teaching everything to ourselves anyway.

  • This guy's heart is bigger than Steve Job's aka Apple's bank account...

  • this is out now, bit bigger though

  • The advantages of this are twofold. Even if many children have access to a PC, it is usually a family PC at home which needs to keep working, which prevents them from spending time on it or doing any serious modifications or programming - if its not Word or Facebook, they aren't allowed to do it.

Also I want one of these!

  • Mister Braben, thank you for The Sentinel.

  • ah small pleasures in life. gotta love em.

  • OH WHAT A SURPRISE SOME CAMBRIDGE UNI GRADUATE KNEE DEEP IN CHINK SEMEN 'INVENTS' A DEVICE THAT IS BOUGHT BY ALL THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS WHILE FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SECTOR SCHOOLS IS APPARENTLY GONNA BE 'SPONSORED' GO FUCK YOURSELF CUNT

  • @wiredboy27 shut the fuck up, moron.

  • @MrDougiemo why, everything I said was factually accurate. It was your choice to look at the caps and the swearing, just like all the other retards that are fuming. I see you're a fan of overweight men saying its OK to be fat. Now I'm no expert but can I deduce that you are indeed a porky pig, kind sir?

  • can you run crysis on it?

  • @Railfan227 for this price i doubt it. lol but you can run pong!!!

  • @Railfan227 ....don´t you have a girlfirend? that´s crysis enough.

  • @partonace i do not have a girlfriend. and how can a human being be comparable to a game?

  • @Railfan227 by going down to the degree of the scale dimension of electrons, protons and neutrons. "human being" - are you an esoteric? what's next? soul, mind, heart...? ROFL

  • @partonace The soul can be described as a spritiual thing and has many meanings. The mind is the thing that we think with and we use every day in all things. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood aroudn the body in vains and arteries. And i ment that a human being and a game are two completly different things such as a human is living being but a game is entertainment.

  • @Railfan227 human is living being but a game is entertainment - both run on the same energy. but if you need this arbitrary distinction in order not to harm or kill other people - so be it. i don't need it.

  • @Railfan227 No, the question should be, will it run Zarch? The lander demo sold me on the Archimedes computer, the RasbPi needs something similarly cool to hook the kids. Dust of the Zarch code, implement in OpenGL and give it some customisation ability. User created maps like Minecraft, user created 'ships' and baddies, replaceable sound effects. For the truely engaged, publish the source code so the advanced can hack it for multiplayer, stereoscopic 3D, maybe augmented reality?

  • @CommandLineCowboy Yes that is what we really need. Minecraft type games are very creative. Maybe one day lots of children will have one of these and they would all know programming. It would be like a standard. Who knows what ideas people willl come up with?

  • @Railfan227 troll

  • @fpilee Excuse me but why have you reffered me as a troll? I am very curious.

  • @Railfan227 FUNNY.

  • @Railfan227 You can run Quake 3 at an average of 15 FPS

  • Idk man... I bought a PC on my own before a TV with HDMI. Idk how a poor child will have an HDTV but no computer..

I CANT WAIT FOR THIS THOUGH!!!!!!

    VGA ALL THE WAY! haha:P

  • PI=Porn Interface

  • Where can I buy this? What OS does it come mounted with? RAM? Flash drive? What the hell is this alien invention?

  • @MrPlasticbagman12 You will be able to buy it from their Website

(raspberrypi . org) and as far as I know it has a specific version of Fedora as its OS.

The 25$ variant will have 128MB of RAM and it uses a SD card for storage

And Yes : Aliens are involved in this.

  • @Utearian Thank you! :) Just one question, how do you connetc a keyboard and mouse? Or if not that, how do you surf the web? :) Thanks again!:)

  • 17 people are M$ and Apple shareholders.

  • 17 people are M$ and Apple shareholders.

  • guess im a lucky kid tri sli 590 gtx 55inch 3D LED tv

  • @TheMarcusman14 lol troll

    you can't do a TRI-SLI with a 590.

    lolololo

  • "Cheap enough for every child to own", and in the beginning i heard something about "...HDMI on one end...".. Hmz. If you even got the money for an TV with HDMI you should be able to buy a normale computer to.

  • @OMEGAThundeR You can use a cheap converter

  • @OMEGAThundeR

its hdmi because thats the standard now, theres no point making it anything else.

  • @OMEGAThundeR it ain't necessarily so- here in the UK, the biggest thing besides a car a lot of working class families own is a HDTV.

  • is there a chance this supports chromium?

  • @UnowMe00 If it supports ARM, yes.

  • Can it run BF3 maxed out?

  • @MrAntiflash thats so stupid its not even funny.

  • This is a serioudly cool piece of kit!

  • I am seriously waiting for mine. A laptop, handheld game system, robotics. The things I could do with such an inexpensive device!

  • batch has is days numbered ¬_¬

  • I'm going to get one, I'm so interested in programming and this is a great idea to get more people interested. Programming is so awesome and it's certainly not boring.

  • HDMI? You do realize that is for high-end displays, which probably cost more than the regular computer. On the other hand ¬_¬ there sits a TV.

  • @someman7, though ... a passive adapter to DVI works fine...

  • @ogatobranco still a bad idea. spend even more money if you have an LCD? what if you have a CRT? what if you don't have a monitor? i know it might seem far, but try to imagine third world nations. i doubt everyone is going to buy one in the first world. i maintain, go with the TV.

  • @someman7 Pretty much all TVs for sale in the UK nowadays have HDMI ports, I'd hardly call the "cheapest TV in argos" a high-end display :)

  • @JaceMorley "in the UK nowadays" means maybe just before judgment day in the third wolrd.

  • Can it run Counter Strike?

  • They’ve started manufacture!

  • I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but I really REALLY want it.

  • That really is quite awesome. I totally agree with him though, being that computers are so integral in our every day lives its quite shocking to see how very little people actually know about programing or really using these devices.

  • holy crap when will David Braben stop being AWESOME!!!! google him if you don't know what I'm talking about.

  • Well, seeing the F-up with "100 $ laptop", he produced "25 $ PC" as a good answer.

Nice idea. Commodore, Sinclair, where you are to see it?

  • In a few years, the next version of this can do more than my desktop can do today. :) For £25 :P

  • Wow Dave you're a great person to be doing this! I salute you Dave! Great job in creating this!!!

  • @DamienColletti I AM DAVE! YOGNAUT

  • A geek's fantasy

  • So long as I can stick a keyboard & mouse into it, along with being able to program in C and possibly Arm Assembly...I really believe this will bring the Home Computer gaming era back from the dead.

However, I do say that with the Type B model in mind.

  • lets hope this does start to challenge the piece of shit of a subject known as ICT.

  • Install Java for Linux and be happy.

  • what an awesome little device!

  • Can it run Crysis?

  • Which schools in the '80's had computer programming? Which schools actually had more than a couple of computers?

Maybe your school had computers for students, but 99% of them did not.

  • @garcemac Alot of computers were in schools in the eighties, enough to learn on

  • @garcemac In 1987, my school had 2 rooms with 28 Commodore 64's in each. This was a Primary (elementary) school in a medium sized coastal town.

  • Linux OS support: Debian, Fedora, ArchLinux.

  • Just like Elite 4 it's vapourware.

  • A BiG Lie this Device wouldn't be sold for £15 because before coming into the market the Retail Price will Go About £50-£70. These Inventors are so Na-eve that they do not understand there is Hungry World of Business Man are Sitting to Make Money Which Makes the End Product Price to Reach £50-£100.. £15 is a Lie Lie Lie.

  • @tentrickss it's gone up £1 so far and comes out next month. I have a feeling you are wrong. It will not go up much more. Unless the world shortage on memory makes it a little more expensive.

  • Will it blend ?

  • omg why are you mentioning powerpoint and excel...

it's called presentation and spreadsheet software

  • It doesn`t run WINE >:(

  • Ah thank the Lord. Maybe we won't become a nation of digital illiterates after all. We need to bang out some Henry Fords, not car valets and taxi drivers

  • i am on the new gcse course computing that is programming

  • @conorm125 lucky you i did ICT 4 years ago and it was the stupidest thing ever... All we did was "learn" how to use powerpoint, excel and access, like I didn't know already from primary school. The only useful part of the course was the HTML bit because it was the closest thing to programming

  • This is amazing. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

  • cant wait, for the v2 raspberry PI series perhaps they will bring back this form factor :)

  • I'm getting one for my programming and im assuming this is going to be portable

  • What about a hard disc? Does it have e sata?

I'm confused, what could it run?

  • @bizarrefruit it has a microsd card slot.

it runs linux, how much of linux or even a working gui, i have no idea.

but it is functional, and at that price point, id even buy one for my cat

  • Respect.

  • I'm gonna buy one when it comes out.

  • David Braben is a legend for 3 clear reasons. 1) He made Elite. 2) He made the word "obfusticated" which the rest of the english-speaking world knows as obfuscated but once again, Braben's creative genius surfaces to tear up the rule book. 3) He has no top lip.

  • send me details of prices of this device for Karachi Pakistan. My email is ali(at)ebraincity(dot)com

  • It should come pre-installed with Elite.

  • I want one because i want to re-live the good old days of the ZX-Spectrum and the BBC Micro, something cheap to plug into the tv that that allowes you to learn programming. but these days, i want something a little more powerfull than BASIC and running and saving programs from tape. This is what is needed, something to spark another programming revolution. Plus it will look cool hanging from my car keys lol.

  • I want them! Though the hard part would be finding monitors with hdmi everywhere. Would be easier if it had vga too.

  • @saiyoucho their website said that it will have composite too, so you can run it on your old tv too

  • @SumDuDe34 Ah right, I forgot about that. That's pretty sweet.

  • what about the mouse?

  • Where can I get one? :)

  • Teach us how to attach this to a touchscreen LCD display, voila, cheap smartphone. Teach us how to attach keypads here and there, voila, cheap portable gaming system. With tons of imagination and creativity, we commoners can conquer everything!

  • AMD is crying, APPLE is crying,

  • David Braben is my hero!!! Thanks so much for the Frontier First Encounters! I played it night and day! For months and months and months... I look back to that game very fondly... Thanks! Hugs! I will also buy 5-10 of these and run them as a group of computers, to learn about computer clusters. :)

  • Will it run crysis?

  • @Brightinator No, no. Can it run MINECRAFT?

  • @adhiofawkes I highly doubt it. Minecraft is probably the worst program I've ever seen when it comes to performance.

  • @Raaszhecku Thatsthejoke.jpg

  • @Raaszhecku Well, it's still one of the best performing java programs I've seen..

  • @adhiofawkes it can run quake 3 with top settings

  • @adhiofawkes no man... im afraid you have to put it to low graphics ... :P axaxaxax

  • @adhiofawkes No, will it run a MINECRAFT SERVER?

  • computing in my school currently involves how to use an excel spreadsheet, or a database of sorts, and something to do with using photoshop, nothing really to do with proper computing.

  • @Hazzaarrrr True that man, true that

  • Brilliant Idea

  • give it to a child??? PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN.

  • @silentbutdeadly333 @ForeverWiked They were aiming for Ubuntu to start with but it won't cope with the specs so they've moved to Debian instead

  • This is epic... its small and efficient... now everyone can have a computer. Even the poor!

  • WHERE DO I GET ONE!?

  • @macro312 , for what I saw on the video, he said it'll be ready to get out in 12 months so I'm guessing here will be around May 2012

  • @rocketero2007 it will be out in november 2011 ish.

  • The people who dislike, doesn't understand the larger picture. I think this is amazing and want one really bad.

  • how do you make it

  • i'll buy 1, just to play around with

  • When???

  • PCCEPTION.

  • Can it run crysis?!

  • Why not just buy an old PC for the same price? Everyone's got PCs these days; that's where you learn comp sci.

  • @cadmus98 I'll answer that for you, though its more practical in the sense of being use to the hardware, the raspberry PI is tiny, its no hassle to cart around anywhere with you, thats the difference!

  • This is absolutely fantastic.

  • If this is for kids, I feel like Debian might be a piss poor choice... then again something like eubunutu might ask for too much processing power

Hope it works out though. I kinda want one just for the novelty of it

  • @ForeverWiked it runs ubuntu

  • @silentbutdeadly333 Since when? Everything I've seen and all the topics about it have said it runs debian

  • @ForeverWiked It said on the website i discovered it on

  • @ForeverWiked I believe Ubuntu is a Debian flavor, I could be wrong. Also I believe it can run many Linux Distros, not just Ubuntu.

  • 1.337 Likes - I like! :-D

  • Raspberry Pi with ReactOS and Visual Basic 6 is all what I need :)

  • Comment removed

  • Idea is great, but it's NOT a 15 pound computer. "It will go to schools? And what will kids do with it?" Answer is: nothing. Not untill they parents will also but usb keyboard, usb mouse, usb hub to connect it and a power pack. Guess the total price ;]
