Which by the way, since they're all out now, you can listen to them in a playlist in iTunes and it's pretty much like a whole album with the last 5 albums they've released.
dream theater has been bringing back parts of old songs since Images and Words. it's no secret...and they do it intentionally. the entire scenes from a memory album is based on metropolis from images and words...not to mention they've reused riffs from 6 degrees of inner turbulance, train of thought, systematic chaos...it's intentional...and i actually kind of like that they do that. they're great musicians, they're not out of ideas...they like making the listener feel at home

Chances are I am not the first one to say this, but it is probably them bringing certain elements from different songs back so the AA Suite can be easily linked.

apologies if it's been said already in the comments already but remember that this is the album that they are (hopefully) finishing the AA saga, of which The Glass Prison was the first part. So, he may be playing the same riff as in TGP on purpose, because all the songs in the AA saga take musical and lyrical cues from previous songs in the saga.
and if they are finishing it on this album its only right that they link it to the first song, thought it was going to go into 6:00 in the first few seconds

John plays exactly the same riff in the shattered fortress, the one after the the drum fill.
In the song the riff beggins at 1.52 the drum fill beggins at 2.02 and they keep on playing the same riff until 2.35. James even sings over it.

Mike Portnoy said on his forum, "Imagine a DT album with "A Change of Seasons", "Octavarium", "Learning to Live", "Pull Me Under" and "The Glass Prison" all on one album. So that pretty much tells you that the album might have some riffs from the past.
Plus, it tells you that this album is going to be amazing!!!

this doesnt mean they are running out of ideas... first off, mike portnoy mentioned we would hear things like glass prision, pull me under, octavarium, etc in this new album... so maybe they were playing it to get new ideas off of the glass prison, and also as mentioned before, the glass prison is part of the AA suite, and the last part is coming in this new album... so trust me, they are NOT running out of ideas

apologies if it's been said already in the comments already but remember that this is the album that they are (hopefully) finishing the AA saga, of which The Glass Prison was the first part. So, he may be playing the same riff as in TGP on purpose, because all the songs in the AA saga take musical and lyrical cues from previous songs in the saga.

Must just mention that through the last however many albums there are a stream of songs which all share riffs. Such as Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Repentance, etc. The AA songs. So the idea of them reprising a riff from one of these songs really isnt that awful! Fill and a half though, Rock on.

Jordan has a vast selection of keyboards in the studio, his main one being the Oasys.

Never in the history of Dream Theater has it been done.
The only thing that happened once was that a FAN changed the title of the songs of James LaBrie's solo album with the ones in Octavarium and posted it on the net.
And Mike mentioned it on a radio interview with Eddie Trunk.
It's so easy to grab any song and change its title, anyone can do it.
I don't think Mike would personally log onto his forum and post a fake album preview.

Well I do remember an interview where he said so. This IS from the new album, I'm just saying, like he said, he likes to build up suspense and get word of mouth started, so he released some songs under names of songs off the album they were currently working on. I'm not making this up, I saw an interview or whatever a couple days ago, where he said this himself. He didn't say that a fan did it, but that he has done it himself. Not trying to be "right" in this situation, but ya, that's all i know

The studio is Avatar Studios.
SDOIT was recorded at BearTracks studios.
Dream Theater has not recorded at BearTracks since 2002 (SDOIT), and BearTracks ceased operation shortly after Spyro Gyra recorded their 2006 album Wrapped in a Dream.
