Classic Iris...and the Iris/Rachael confrontation - oh boy! lol... I was a teenager (male btw) in the 70's and I was absolutely hooked on Another World. Watching this (with a smile on my face) takes me back to another time and place in my life - dare I say it - to Another World!
Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to watch this show (which I missed) from around 1970-1981 which was probably the heyday of this classic soap. A few years back, I screamed for joy when I learned SoapNOT had bought the entire 35 years and was planning on running it. I was soooooo disappointed when they started running the episodes around 1987. I still watched it though, and the show was still surprisingly good -- at least until they yanked it off to replace it with some youth shit.
@TimsDale4ever SoapNET licensed episodes of AW from P&G, rather than P&G selling them. And, it is widely believed that those episodes that so many of us would love to see again were in batches of tapes where the studio practice was to tape over episodes.
Yes, that's RIchard Backus as Ted Bancroft who is Brian Bancroft's son and Iris's then step son, since Iris was married to Brian at this time. This episode is from March 23, 1979, when Harding Lemay was still writing AW. Thanks to AWHP for the information.
I just don't know why want the writes of Daytime go and view old episodes and learn. I loved the dialogue between characters, that is how we begin to love the characters and know them. And Ms. Beverlee sure was one of a kind!!! Great actress. Will be missed
Reason why soaps suck. They are NYC based. Look how many shows were produced not just in Manhattan but in Brooklyn. Another World was a low budget NYC soap in a Brooklyn neighborhood, Except for GH, they can keep their California based soap crap
Actually, it was Another World, in NYC, that stepped up the production values to make them more like primetime shows and films. Nothing wrong with Brooklyn. Yes, near its cancellation they had begun to cut back on its budget but it was a trend beginning in all of soaps, and, really, in all of network TV.
Iris, as played by the incredible Beverlee McKinsey is probably the greatest soap character in the history of television. I can't get over McKinsey's classical beauty. In ancient times, statues would have been erected of her.
@mwoodson1 (I agree.. It's like watching live theatre. I wish daytime would cut the gimmicks and go back to just simple writing and great storytelling. There were no guns, explosions, mobs. Just great writing and acting. The dialog between Rachel and Iris is better than anything I've seen on soaps in a long time.
I love everyone's comments and I wasn't even a viewer. I missed ALL of AW except what I read in magazines or on award shows, etc. I was always aware that it was a jam up show and that it had a huge following. (I was always on CBS). These shows were BRILLIANT back then because the show revolved around characters of all ages that were unique unto themselves -- everyone wasn't a cardboard copy of yet another 18 year old! Combined with sweeping epic stories they were masterpieces of entertainment!
Robin Strasser owns the role of Rachel. Victoria was ok when she first started on the show back in 1972 she was a great villianess then they changed her character of Rachel (nice). Her new portrayel of Rachel was down right boring! The head writer thru out the best formula working for the show:Steve/Rachel/ Alice. The Matthew's (Mary). Destroyed Pat and John's marriage. I'm surprised that not one producer changed her character back to its origin after Another Worlds ratings fell to #8.
@Jornmr1 Very interesting position. I can see the valid points, while disagreeing. I always felt the transition from when the R-A-S triangle ruled the show to the new Rachel-Iris vision was pretty seemless. Anytime you lose performers who account for half the story, could easily be a disaster. I'd argue that AW's fall had more to do with ABC's concurrent renaissance. AW maintained quality, mostly, through 82 or so. Then it had big ups (Loves, Cecile) & HUGE downs. But I always loved Vicki W lots
Wow! Only Soap I ever got into (for a few years anyway). I remember Jamie Frame, Mac, Iris, a butler and maid who who I think killed a chaufer and hid his body under the boatshed or something, Aida, the Countess de Poulinac who Rachel was mad at because she was after Rachel's son Jamie, etc. etc.!!!
Aunt Liz...one of a kind, played by Daytime Emmy winner Irene Daily. I remeber vividly when she won her Emmy for AW in 1979, purse in one hand, she motioned for Beverlee McKinsey (a fellow nominee that year) to come up to the stage with her during her acceptance, which she graciously declined. Oh how I wish we could turn back the clock to those days.
Iris is Mac's first-born child...Rachel (Mac's wife) was the same age as Iris, which provided drama in the early days since Iris called Rachel a gold-digger for the age difference and they were at odds often...the actor who played Mac looked very good for his age which is why Iris and Mac look like brother and sister..when Carmen Duncan assumed the role, she looked more the age of a daughter for Mac though she looked younger than Rachel which was a little odd considering they were the same age
following the equally accomplished actress, Audra Lindley, was a softening of Iris's character. Still, vitriolic & conniving...but with a bit of a human side that showed some vulnerability! (Felt that Daddy 'Mac" never loved her enough)
Actually Audra Lindley originated the role of Aunt Liz Matthews. McKinsey originated the Iris role. She was fabulous, and I agree that no Daytime Emmy was a travesty. What memories these scenes have.
Tonkslshere; No Daytime Emmy *ever* for this wonderful actress' amazing performances (esp. Another World)??!!! Gives one serious doubts re the Academy's ability to realize *true* artistic ability! Ms McKinsey delivered without 'chewing the scenery'! She was & is the best!
what do people mean, precisely, when they use the phrase "chewing the scenery"?
Ha-ha, because I've seen the same comment used in reference to that infernal Kim Zimmer who won FIVE Emmy's for "Reva Shayne" on Guiding Light. I watched GL during the 80's and 90's and cannot understand AT ALL how Zimmer won 5 times and Beverlee McKinsey won nothing, and was only nominated once!
Beverlee McKinsey was one of a kind. Wish her earlier work on the show still existed (1972-75). Would love to see her in scenes with Eliot, Alice, Louise and Robert. She had a big confrontation with Mac (July 1975) and then overdosed on sleeping pills. And remember her reaction when she discovered her portrait and bust of Mac had been destroyed? Curse NBC and P&G for not preserving those episodes!
AdArmand; You *definitely* got it! While this amazing actress was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe/Bette Davis; Ms Beverlee McKinsey truly proved herself as One-of-a-kind as one of the greatest stage & show actresses!
Louise, Rachel, Iris, Mac, Liz, etc. - Thanks to Harding Lemay for the countless hours of entertainment and for securing the talents of performers like Beverlee McKinsey, Douglass Watson and Victoria Wyndham. Thanks so much for this clip of the late, great McKinsey with Wyndham. A candidate for the You Tube hall of fame!
That combination of venom and hatred in McKinsey's face at the end of this scene on its own, should have gotten her the Emmy. Sublime, perfect and the essence of the Iris she played.

We'll probably never see a soap opera like this again. Or that great set where Iris lived. All My Children is moving to Los Angeles to save money.
NYC, at one time home to over 9 soap operas, doesn't give a damn that the industry is struggling.

Ted Bancroft, Brian's son/Iris' stepson. He replaced Eric Roberts (yes, Julia's brother) in the role.

what the heck? !
DarthSnoopy96 1 year ago
@DarthSnoopy96 : "Chewing the scenerty" or "Hamming
it up" refers to an actor/actress over-dramatizing their
role - ala Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Blvd" as Norma
Desmond with the famous line:
"....Mr DeMille - I'm ready for my close-up!"
I'm with you re the industry's *total* lack of recognition
re Beverlee McKinsey's role as the diabolical "Iris"
being a travesty!
dia33386 1 year ago
@dia33386 / @DarthSnoopy06: While Ms Zimmer rightully
merited all her awards as "Reva" on GL -it seems that
the Daytime Emmys has *always* been plagued by
Industry 'politics' where soap nominations & awards are
concerned!
Beverlee McKinsey was done WRONG (imho) by the
industry & the Daytime Emmy Commitee! But, she will
ALWAYS be remembered as one of the greatest actress'
ever - & the woman you loved to hate!
They don't come better than Beverlee McKinsey!
