  • Hey Pink! Question: How often should u latch ur hair. I have alot of new growth in 2 weeks and my roots start to infuse with each other. I month is kinda too long. I dont know what to do. Can I latch every 2 weeks?

  • @Ndyof3 I say whatever works for you but be careful of overtighting your hair and stressing it. Gently pulling the locks apart at the roots may help as well. I think your hair will tell you if it likes the more frequent latching or not.... be careful of thinning.

  • AMAZING!!!

    you're so cool!

  • how do u intetrlock in the back without messing up

  • did you latch them that often in the beginning and how long have you had your locs?

    thanks

  • @chinyre83 I didn't start latching till they were about a year and a half old I think. I've had my locs for about 6 years now.

  • I've been told that switching back and forth from interlocking and palm rolling can cause space in the locks and make them break.

    Have you heard of this?

How true have you found it to be?

  • Sorry about taking so long to reply. I've heard of it but I have not experienced this. I'm 5 1/2 years into locing and have experienced no breakage. I've switched back and forth between methods many times.

  • Greetings Queen! I know that this was made some time ago but I just happened to come across your video. Thank you so much for your post. I've had my locs for 15 yrs. and at 1st I didn't need to twist or latch. But recently, my new growth has been driving me nuts. My hair seems similar to yours ( mixed grades ) so I am gonna try your method. Just curious...what city do you live in? Anyway, thanks again and your hair is beautiful :).

  • That was great! Thanks for the video, I learned a lot!

  • Hey Pinky

I loved the video and I have had my locs for about 6 months but have really soft hair and I want to start latching my hair. I was wondering if the latch at the root is creating a knot or no.

  • It's not a knot, it's making the same sort of twist as a braid which is easily removed later on.

  • great video, I dont have locs but i always have to palm roll (re twist ) my cousins and next time he asks me Im going to use your method. thanks, I think it will work well in his hair because its is kind of silky

  • All your videos are amazing! Thanks for all the advice and giving us strength to persevere with our loc maintenance!

  • thanks beautiful ya latching methods are flawless

  • Many many thanks I love your tutorial, very helpful, now I know :)

  • At only 3 weeks it may be best to wait for a couple months prior to switching so your locs can begin to settle. But there is no rule against latching the roots this early. Some start with this method so It will be fine whatever you decide. Just know if you only latch the roots when you switch, that will be tight and the ends loose and will stil need to be palmrolled again. If you want it to look uniform you must latch down as far as you can.

  • Hi Pinky,

I have thin soft hair. Will locs work for me.I was thinking of starting with braidlocs.

I love your locs, they're so beautiful.

  • Well anyone can loc their hair. It just may take a bit longer for the process to complete with softer hair. But no matter how soft, it depends on how kinky or curly it is for the hair to grip around each other and remain there. If your hair is thin, you may have to consider the weight your locs will have over time and if that will create more stress and possibly breakage. You may need larger locs so the rootbed can handle it.

  • What a wonderful video! I've been trying to find a way to maintain my locs better...latching looks so easy! Wow. Instant fave AND sub.

  • Thank you soo much!!!

  • I have been loc-ing for 3 years now, never even heard of this method. But I've definitely lost locs due to thin "stress" areas. I don't know id I'd have patience to do this on my own, but I definitely will seek out someone in my area who can do this for me.

  • this is amazing..thank you so much!

  • great technique Pinky

  • Best video I have seen to loc's up your hair..thank you

  • This is the best illustration that I have seen yet! Thank you for this presentation. One thing, I can not SEE how you go through the part again to cover the hole or gap. I'm not sure, do you make another part ? More specifically, if the part was north- south. Do you then make another part going east-west to cover the hole -your finger was coving how you did this portion. thanks again. Oh, And you Locs look awesome!!!

  • You can go in any direction as long as you don't go back through the same opening as you did prior. Meaning you alternate direction, but keep sticking the latchhook into the hair at the base and not the hole you just made. I hope I explained that right :S

  • I got it! You are very clear and concise, great video.

  • Thank you so much for this vid. For awhile, i wanted locs, but what turned me off was that so many ladies had thinning on the scalp and no edges. now i know how to prevent that. :)

  • Pinky I did it!! I could not find my crochet hook so i did it with my fingers. It came out really nice! So different from twisting. This way my hair hangs exactly like I want it to!

Showed this video to my daughter, and now she only crochets her locks! Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you!!!

  • I just started reading about this method today; your demo is very clear and concise. Thanks so much for posting!

    Reese

  • thanks for the info.

  • WOW Pinky!!

I did'nt know I could do this with my locs!

Iam on my 3rd set of locs and I always twisted my hair.

    I've got to try this!

You are the best! Thank-you again!

  • thx for the tutorial! would i be able to comb out my locs in the future if i do the latchhook method?

  • Yes, I use both latching and palmrolling, I haven't had a problem taking them out.

  • Great tutorial! Very easy to understand and follow.

  • Great tutorial...very helpful. Blessings! :)

  • good info thanks a bunch. very informative, and ease of viewing video i like. btw, your locs are ZESTY! AND AWESOME.

  • Once my locs mature I think I am going to use this method periodically. BTW, thank you so much for the recent advice. I appreciate the fact that you respond when newly loc'd individuals like myself need help.

  • very good dem demo!!! clearly spoken and directed. thank you very much! :-)

  • remember wen i sent u a message askin wat i shud do 2 hold my ends 2gether? sumone suggested that i shud use a crochet hook n latch hook my ends. do u honestly think it cud b done?

  • Yes I remember. You can do this but it still won't be "all the way" down to the ends. Keep in mind that you are still in the baby loc stages and that it being a little lose is normal, even in the teenaged stages it is. My locs are almost 4 yrs old now and there are still some which are not locked but just tightly curled or coiled. It depends on hair type. Yes I think it can be done, but overall please don't stress too much about it unless it's totally unraveling on you. It's part of the process.

  • very informative i was worried my locs would get thinner and thinner with twisting with gel or wax i'll never twist a again

  • How long does it take you to latch your locs?

  • Takes me about an hour overall now, sometimes a bit faster if I get in the groove, lol. It also depends on how much newgrowth I have, but it's still not as long as when I had to blowdry and curl my hair!! I don't miss that one bit!

  • Your hair is beautiful. My question, what causes some latched locks to look uneven, bumpy, chewy? Is it possible to latch too tightly (not necessarily at the roots)? I hope my question is clear. Thanks.

  • Honestly, I'm not certain. I think it could be from not latching in different directions as you go upwards. Perhaps the size of the loc could also make that happen. I'm guessing here. I latch and palmroll instead of just latching exclusively. I don't know if that is preventing some of those issues or not. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but I can only go from what has happened to me personally and my locs are mostly uniform.

  • Ur an Angel...I've been payin a lady $60/hr to do this

  • beautiful hair

  • Thank you zayloc!

  • How come you only latch your hair twice per year

  • Due to my age and hair texture I don't want to do anything too tightly or too often which may cause thinning or breakage. I let my roots fuzz up now that my locs have matured to keep a stronger overall root base. This way as the locs grow longer, they have more strength at the root to hold the weight. I think overtwisting is the cause of some people's locs breaking off at the root.
