I compliment you on the solid photography here - it's clear enough to see their fingers at play. Andy Irvine just did three shows in New York - at Arlene's Grocery and the one I caught at An Beal Bocht - and it was this song that stopped my mind that night. It's on his new CD and again it's the song I keep coming back to. It's pleasing that the writer chimed in here.
Andy Irvine is one of the finest folk singers of all time-and this song-so poignant and powerful is mastered by Andy and Donal but most especially on Irvine's album-the violin sends it to an emotional plateau. Thank you lads and than you George Papavgervis for a sublime ballad.
I think I've listened to this song five times in a row. I'd never heard these men until a bit ago. A couple of young men had Paul B. on their site. Bless 'em. I followed it here. Very apprecited Daragh. Wish they all could come to Montana! And George! :) Thank you very much.
OK, so when I posted my last comment I was emotional and a bit of a Greek drama queen to boot. I make no apologies however. It isn't the honour that Andy paid me - great though that is anyway - but his demonstration of the power of the performer that moved me. He took the song and made it his own, heart-stabbingly haunting. So, like a father seeing a child in a happy & loving relationship, I look on admiringly.
hi george, i heard andy play this live last year and it has stuck with me since. i am practicing to play it on stage on tuesday. thank you for a very moving song and lyric.
@bigalli100 No worries there. Every time I've seen Andy play this at a gig he's always given George credit for this brilliant song. Andy's good at acknowledging his sources.
@GeorgePapavgeris This touches me in ways most stories do not. I remember times when my George had troubles finding work. I hated to see his face when he came home. All willing and healthy. This actually has made me cry. They did a good job for you GP. :) Tells a story that moves you when so many don't these days. You've forever saying to yourself, "what IS that person singing about??" lol Thank you for not keeping this to yourself. . :) Songsmirth
Daragh, thanks for going to the trouble of posting this video I've been waiting a long time for it. Thanks to PJ in Aus for the link, I know you were going to burst till you got this tune.
I sure miss Annbjørg Lien's haunting Hardanger Fiddle on this, but Andy Irvine's voice sure is taking you to otherworldly places anyway.
