  • Sonic Youth Song? Please

  • whats the name of the sonic youth song you used?

  • whats the name of the sonic youth song you used?

  • dude what? your voice is too crispy to understand XD

  • good typography skills but the movie is a no no....

  • the girl does not capture naoko at all. sorry. so plain, so without character, just reading text. the narrator tried at least. but i dont blame u guys cmon its pretty ballsy attempting a complex work like Murakami's

  • it's a Japenese book, y they speak E?

  • Omg, and you know what? In 'Crime and Punishment' they spoke in Russian. It's unthinkable how they allowed the screenwriters to let it be filmed in english! Gasp!

  • This video is really really good. My fav book, I like your idea, thanks so much.

  • There's a proper movie in the works for this. Remember Rinko Kikuchi from Babel? She's going to be in it. And Ryuichi Sakamoto for the music. It's just going to be amazing, end of...

  • interesting.

  • @nicck Oh woah, Ryuichi Sakamoto on music!? That's news to me! Excellent!!

Kikuchi is powerful, she'll do the role justice. Unlike the monotone actress here...

  • @GoldenEyeRa He isn't anymore :( Some guy from Radiohead is now...I'm not sure what happened.

  • @nicck Ah, yeah saw that last night, kinda sad. The guy who's doing the music now worked on the music for the director's previous movie, I Come With the Rain, so I guess that kinda makes sense.

Thanks for letting me know :)

  • I really liked the footage and the music, though it would be better if the voice had a slower pace, with pauses, to show the effort required to write those lines. Still, it was really good.

  • im watanabe!

  • Oh and I forgot to add you guys did a great job!

  • The girl is gorgeous!

  • Great effort, but why does the guy playing Watanabe look like a rapper???This looks more like Norwegian Hood...with Watanabe smoking pot and having hallucinations....

  • nvm it says at the end >.>

  • what are the songs called?

  • I love this book.

    great job.

    congratulations.

    =*

  • This is a memory. The voice should be lower and slower. It should match the mood of a dream. Even better would be someone reading the original in Japanese. Maybe they'll have voice-overs in the movie set to come out next year.

  • I agree!

  • You killed the mood with the atrocious American accent. You've just about shred every semblance of verisimilitude within the first four seconds.

    Kudos

  • Nice video ;D

I also like Norwegian Wood very much and made a little "adaptation" of a part of the book (the funeral). It's available in my channel if it interests you ;)

  • when i ends read this story my heart feels broken any novel of any writter never makes me feel like i feel righ now i really feel hopeless

  • Great job!

  • hey! great job on this little adaptation! mind if i link your video in my sidebar for the book?

  • lovely,stuff.

  • great work! i love your interpretation of the story.

if you want you can watch "Firefly" which i made with friends for school. of course it's not very professional (language and movie^^), but wie tried really hard!

  • yeah..it should be in japanese with "eng-rish" subtitle.. nice book though but the headphone on his ear was exasperating.

Toru watanabe was listening to what? 60's punk rock?or teletubbies hit parade?

  • I have never imagined Naoko would be like that. Due to the book, she should be slender, fragile, beautiful in a spleenful way

  • Midori this was girl :)

  • yeah, i could redo her voice and the most recent edit of the film, but whatevs.

  • yehh.. horrible voice acting or acting man. im sorry! the video is great though and she is very cute??

  • I've read it in Russian 2 years ago, in Deutsch 1 year ago (the title was Naokos Lächeln).

  • I read it in Italian, 10 years ago, the title was Tokyo Blues, what a wonderful title. Im going to try to read it in English, I just miss too much naoko and midori. Just too much.

  • naoko, midori, ....

    love this book, for ever

if you live in california and you loved this book too,

pls feel free to write me

  • i feel for naoko.. great vid

  • i just love this book

  • am i right in saying that there's only the one officially sanctioned murakami film? all these clips are very interesting and some work better than others - personally i'd like to see wong kar wai have a stab at one. but if i have one criticism - and it's been mentioned before: japanese author, japanese characters, japanese language. fair enough - you have constraints on what you can do - but that is the main problem. that's why the best trailer i've seen was 'end of the world'

  • Chrisb, I like what you said about wong kar wai. It would be just a perfect match Murakami script + Wong kar wai's art.

Hey,it is not clear to me: is that a movie available somewhere?

  • he*

  • The female sounded like she was reading a script. The male sounded like she was reading a script but that's fine because he plays the part of the narrator. But for the girl, it's different. That voice just doesn't fit the voice I would've imagined to hear from one of Murakami's vividly colored characters. It just seemed a little on the dull side. I agree with the person who said, "I don't see the Murakami 'something' in this vid."

  • didnt like it. the acting and voice acting was very bad. filming was off too :(

  • I don´t see the Murakami "something" in this vid.

  • The best book can never be really filmed...

  • Also, these actors happen to be two kids in my Japanese class.

  • Which also reminds me that I will upload the final-final cut.

  • Oh, I admire your attempt. Norwegian Wood would make the best movie. But you aren't talented enough, I'm sorry. I hope you'll understand how happy you've made me. I'll wait till an immensely talented director takes on this project.

  • An immensely talented director wont work with drivel.

  • its good as a video, but i just finished reading the 4thchapter of norwegian wood (loving it so far!!) and so i have that first chapter very fresh and its not exactly how i amgined it....i mean...i just thought of it a lot more...prettier...and asian....and apart from the actors u had..there was not much japan in there....sorry! but as a vid for ur class i guess its good enough!

  • i find haruki murakami's novel a little bit odd this is the first time to read asian writer...what i liked about his novel is how he described what the character's feeling and delivered places and action in a discreet moment of feelings...

  • he's brilliant

  • do you already read all murukami's book? me i read dancu, dancu, dancu, and norwegian wood what can you say which is the best?

  • the Box Man and Woman in the dunes are best, His collection of short stories - Beyond the curve is quite amazing too.

  • try reading Abe Kobo, He will blow you away and wont berate you with cliches and repetative people and descriptions. And he does not resort to predictable pandering and accepting mediocrity.

  • I have to agree with pureecstasy...I dont hate it so much, but it kind of looses the feeling, especially of Murakami's work, with the american accent...Maybe Japanese (with subtitles?) would be better...still, I can get the feeling of this book...the sadness & loneliness so often in murakami...great work!

  • This video have good sound track. What's the title of this first song?

  • "Untitled 1" by Sigur Ros

  • Naoko, i believe, is pronounced "nay-oh'-koh". I had a good friend in school, Japanese, with that name. Now-ko seems americanized.

  • i hate it that its asian characters but narrated by an american speaker..somehow it doesnt work.loses that feel. no offence, but it wasnt how i imagined it to be

  • I read this book one years ago, and I can't forget. Excuse for my bad english - thank you

  • Great work. I really like your work, and you really captured Haruki Murakami's atmosphere. Good job!

  • Why is the girl talking like that? Is she a bad actress or is she reading?

  • it is from Murakami's book

  • But why is she talking like that?

  • the book was amazing, read it twice, the movie looks decent to..

  • I love Haruki Murakami! Norwegian Wood was the first book of his I've ever read. His writing is so beautiful and surreal. I love all his books!

  • This "fruit" character is one real loser with far too much time on its hands! It had better get out of the house, or mom's basement, a bit more often.

Oh and Fruit, if you decide to direct some of your useless time in replying, please wear a sanitary mask or sit at least four meters distant since, even if it isn't contagious, I have no wish to come into contact with your spittle - loser.

    No glot, clum Friday.

  • ok mr. college rocker. what grade are you in?

keep up with your suburban taste, try reading a little more than this mindless drivel, I know you probably have not had much of a deep thought lately if ever, but try reading Abe Kobo if you think your neo-orientalist murakami is great enough to match up to the masters.

  • I don't go past 1 reply to assholes like yourself, however pretentious. I'm 49 and teach in japan. I can read passably in Japanese, and have definitely read far more Japanese literature than you (and probably more literature as well). I have a life, while you can't even simply dislike something without ranting where no one cares - a You Tube thread! You are clearly one pretntious loser asshat, so may I say in parting: KMRIA!

  • Ok keep your mediocrity and your Nova or JET lessons then. I read , write speak level 1, Nihongo :P. And a big probably not on the read more JApanese Literature and world literature. Of course you will prefer Tom Robbins, Isabelle Allende etc. There are a lot of amazing writers out there and murakami just ain't one of 'em. although you seem a bit like a crank i might add. :P

  • I've been reading these threads, and friendsofthefruitof indeed, does have a shit-ton of time on his hands and thinks he's some kind of literati go-to guy, who just likes to throw around the word neo-orientalism, but in fact knows shit about fuck, but likes to talk anyway (zuboshi?) if you hate murakami so much, wtf r u doing here in murakamiville? wait...I know this one...lemme guess...socially inept...no girlfriend...needs attention...mom found your blow-up doll...am I right or am I right?

  • I just started this book yesterday.

  • hey why the video stop??? can you send to me link of video???

  • remember meeeeee rememebberrrr meeee before i die ohhhh puleezeee and bring me some cheezeeeee . ooooohhhhh booooo hoooo

  • That was cool. Next time try putting some emotion into your voice. it sounds like you're reading

  • they are reading

  • great adaptation man! you did justice to the feel of the first chapter.

  • interesting.

  • murakami is the best

  • he is the best among beginner writers. try Yokomitsu Riichi or ABE KOBO they are even more intense and fascinating. Murakami reads like isabelle allende comparing with Gabriel Garcai Marquez. I seems people dont want to be challenged much these days.

  • fuckoffffffffff

  • hey man, this is super cool!

sigur ros is the best ever!

    but e-critics are not,

    :( :( :(

  • weak unbalanced promotion is foolish. so shut up and listen to britany spears!

  • Good try, the narration is a bit iffy though

  • ahhhh this remembers me of High school dont forget me pleeezzee. mmmmmmmm

    sssmmmmmaaalllllttttzzzzz, can you say CHEEZE?

  • if you really think Murakami is interesting you definately ought to read KOBO ABE! Abe takes a little more concentration and you might find out from where murakami is lifting his stories. Abe is the family name.

  • It's different from the book but I liked it. Horray for all the Murakami fans across the world! ~M

  • Really good work. You have captured the resonance of the source material and I really like the feeling of the film too. Keep it up!

  • Good work, I think you had the right intentions here, but persionally I would've kept with the style you had going untill 1.21 I think you captured the melancholic atmosphere Murakami creates in his stories very well in that part of the video.

  • look, some student make a only 2 minutes video about a whole book. they changed a bit but i think its okay. and came out is really good just try to make it better...

    i think its superb^^

  • look, i love murakami, i love norwegian wood, but this short is terrible. no sense of visual flair or confidence, awful acting, sloppy editing...it's just a poor representation of the source material. if you're going to adapt murakami, do it right.

my adaptation of murakami's 'on seeing the 100% perfect girl one beautiful april morning' is up on youtube. post a comment if you want.

  • I saw your adaptation of "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl..." Nothing to write home about, and certainly nothing to brag about. Apparently you confuse "visual flair" with constantly fucking with the camera movements and lighting to try and draw attention to them. It's the typical result when you give a wannabe DP a large roll of colored gels and a directors hat.

You flatter yourself too much. Get a decent reel before you start talking trash.

  • wow!

not the way i would do it...

    but... awesome work man!

    really good im impressed :)

  • thanks man.

  • Murakami is very easing reading. I love his style, I never get bored.

  • I read Norwegian Wood in a college humanities class AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!

  • awsome

any more plans for movies of murakami's books?

    sputnik sweetheart would be awsome

  • mmm looove it. very, very nice.

  • The intention was good, and it's well made, I appreciate it! But I can't feel anything from it...the American voices can't convey the emotion of the words. It needs to be Japanese, the book is Japanese so it's very soul.

But well done, I appreciate your efforts.

  • OMG I totally agree! Having read the English version first, I didn't especially hate the book that much but after reading the Japanese version I was like WOW this is COMPLETELY different!! It was enlightening so I think I know how you feel if that's what you mean..

  • wow... your mean

  • my favorite music and my favorite author combined to one video, how could I not like it?
