the girl does not capture naoko at all. sorry. so plain, so without character, just reading text. the narrator tried at least. but i dont blame u guys cmon its pretty ballsy attempting a complex work like Murakami's
Omg, and you know what? In 'Crime and Punishment' they spoke in Russian. It's unthinkable how they allowed the screenwriters to let it be filmed in english! Gasp!
There's a proper movie in the works for this. Remember Rinko Kikuchi from Babel? She's going to be in it. And Ryuichi Sakamoto for the music. It's just going to be amazing, end of...
@nicck Ah, yeah saw that last night, kinda sad. The guy who's doing the music now worked on the music for the director's previous movie, I Come With the Rain, so I guess that kinda makes sense.
I really liked the footage and the music, though it would be better if the voice had a slower pace, with pauses, to show the effort required to write those lines. Still, it was really good.
Great effort, but why does the guy playing Watanabe look like a rapper???This looks more like Norwegian Hood...with Watanabe smoking pot and having hallucinations....
This is a memory. The voice should be lower and slower. It should match the mood of a dream. Even better would be someone reading the original in Japanese. Maybe they'll have voice-overs in the movie set to come out next year.
I also like Norwegian Wood very much and made a little "adaptation" of a part of the book (the funeral). It's available in my channel if it interests you ;)
great work! i love your interpretation of the story.
if you want you can watch "Firefly" which i made with friends for school. of course it's not very professional (language and movie^^), but wie tried really hard!
I read it in Italian, 10 years ago, the title was Tokyo Blues, what a wonderful title. Im going to try to read it in English, I just miss too much naoko and midori. Just too much.
am i right in saying that there's only the one officially sanctioned murakami film? all these clips are very interesting and some work better than others - personally i'd like to see wong kar wai have a stab at one. but if i have one criticism - and it's been mentioned before: japanese author, japanese characters, japanese language. fair enough - you have constraints on what you can do - but that is the main problem. that's why the best trailer i've seen was 'end of the world'
The female sounded like she was reading a script. The male sounded like she was reading a script but that's fine because he plays the part of the narrator. But for the girl, it's different. That voice just doesn't fit the voice I would've imagined to hear from one of Murakami's vividly colored characters. It just seemed a little on the dull side. I agree with the person who said, "I don't see the Murakami 'something' in this vid."
Oh, I admire your attempt. Norwegian Wood would make the best movie. But you aren't talented enough, I'm sorry. I hope you'll understand how happy you've made me. I'll wait till an immensely talented director takes on this project.
its good as a video, but i just finished reading the 4thchapter of norwegian wood (loving it so far!!) and so i have that first chapter very fresh and its not exactly how i amgined it....i mean...i just thought of it a lot more...prettier...and asian....and apart from the actors u had..there was not much japan in there....sorry! but as a vid for ur class i guess its good enough!
i find haruki murakami's novel a little bit odd this is the first time to read asian writer...what i liked about his novel is how he described what the character's feeling and delivered places and action in a discreet moment of feelings...
try reading Abe Kobo, He will blow you away and wont berate you with cliches and repetative people and descriptions. And he does not resort to predictable pandering and accepting mediocrity.
I have to agree with pureecstasy...I dont hate it so much, but it kind of looses the feeling, especially of Murakami's work, with the american accent...Maybe Japanese (with subtitles?) would be better...still, I can get the feeling of this book...the sadness & loneliness so often in murakami...great work!
i hate it that its asian characters but narrated by an american speaker..somehow it doesnt work.loses that feel. no offence, but it wasnt how i imagined it to be
This "fruit" character is one real loser with far too much time on its hands! It had better get out of the house, or mom's basement, a bit more often.

keep up with your suburban taste, try reading a little more than this mindless drivel, I know you probably have not had much of a deep thought lately if ever, but try reading Abe Kobo if you think your neo-orientalist murakami is great enough to match up to the masters.

look, some student make a only 2 minutes video about a whole book. they changed a bit but i think its okay. and came out is really good just try to make it better...
look, i love murakami, i love norwegian wood, but this short is terrible. no sense of visual flair or confidence, awful acting, sloppy editing...it's just a poor representation of the source material. if you're going to adapt murakami, do it right.
my adaptation of murakami's 'on seeing the 100% perfect girl one beautiful april morning' is up on youtube. post a comment if you want.
I saw your adaptation of "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl..." Nothing to write home about, and certainly nothing to brag about. Apparently you confuse "visual flair" with constantly fucking with the camera movements and lighting to try and draw attention to them. It's the typical result when you give a wannabe DP a large roll of colored gels and a directors hat.
You flatter yourself too much. Get a decent reel before you start talking trash.
The intention was good, and it's well made, I appreciate it! But I can't feel anything from it...the American voices can't convey the emotion of the words. It needs to be Japanese, the book is Japanese so it's very soul.
