  • i'm buying one of these after christmas and i can't wait!

  • i could be wrong but the rectangle in the centre could be a gem dampener, such as "Moon Gel" my friend has it for his snare drum on his kit, and that rectangle could be either a glossy pad, or a dampener, but of course, just an idea

  • Very unusal, thus very good. What's that funny little square on top of the drum?

  • @AndersO1983 Thanks! The square on the top is where our logo goes, but this was an older custom drum that had a custom glass logo and paint job.

  • @AndersO1983 it could say MADE IN CHINA

  • that sucks...8 people missed the like button

  • Sounds like someone playing slap bass, are these drums expensive?

  • The hapi drums really do sound beautiful. I recently purchased a zen (have yet to receive it, as the maker was on a backlog of like 16 weeks). But I'm thinking my next purchase will be a hapi drum. They're a bit less expensive than the zen. They also have their own unique and gorgeous sound. Love this vid! Enchanting!!!

  • I got lucky and found one of these on Craigslist for 150 buck! It's the coolest instrument I've ever purchased. Can't wait to put it in a song!

  • i can haz..??.......

  • do you have to store them in a dry place?

  • This reminds me of the Myst games. Super-chill music.

  • do you make them for sale?

  • @PresidentBust Yes, you can buy them at: HapiTones (dot) com

  • It sounds very similar to a Hang.

  • It sounds very similar to a Hung.

  • How hard is this instrument to learn?

  • @Kilfio easy the scale is built so all notes sound well together, you can really just play away and it will sound nice

  • Hey oddmusic luv the sound big time......i know people have asked you this on numerous occasions but i too would like to get my hands on a HAPI please give me the info required to purcahse one.....Cheers

  • I... Am so thankful for this little music maker. Thank you for spreading your Hapiness. X)

  • tightness

  • Just for clarity, the akebono scale is the same as the natural minor (Aeolian) scale WITHOUT the subdominant (the fourth degree) and WITHOUT the subtonic (the seventh degree).

    E.g., A akebono would go A B C E F A.

Just because there are five notes, that doesn't make it THE pentatonic scale, just one kind.

PS, this drum is AMAZING and I want one really bad.

  • @pinksynth You're exactly right, Pink. And thanks for the comment about the drums. And with the new shorter "Slim" Hapi Drums, we also make them in higher keys, like the Akebono scale in A, like you referenced :)

  • Trippy...

  • Is that an electric guitar pick-up in the center?

  • simply incredible

  • how much would one of those cost ?

  • How beautiful.

  • are hapi drums very expensive?? cuz i think that sound absolutely beautiful but i dont exactly have very much money to spare

  • that sounds very cool...did you make this?and what is that blue midle piece for by the way, besides having the name on it?i'm really interested in having one like this

  • Are there instructions on how to properly play one when you purchase? Or would that be separate?

  • Out of all the home made type hang drums thingies... this one, the Hapi is very much my favorite.

  • yo odd, where is this hapi drum from, saw some aboriginals jammin one of these while in aus. i wants one!

  • how much do these things run?

  • glad to see at least someone is taking the iniciative to promote the hang in some way

  • P.S. I was watching you with didgeridoo, igil etc and noticed how relaxed your dog was. My late (rest for her soul) Lori was also enjoying, when I was singing and playing. Live long and prosper!

  • Make a donnut shape HAPI-drum and has more tones on it and the person are in the midle on a spin-able chair?

  • Comment removed

  • no me convenceo

  • I wish I could buy one but they are so expensive :'0, the paint job is really cool on that, did hapi paint it or you?

  • Comment removed

  • @tooosweeet Sorry, I had a typo in it, so what I meant; when you buy a Hapi, wich only costs around 375$, you can choose a colour you want. And a Hang costs around 3000$ so yeah, considering that I might get myself a Hapi...

  • @Getaro Look into zen tambours as well

  • man... amazing...

  • 100,100th viewer

  • Have heard one before and just love the sound.. How much

  • wow I *really* love this. It truly makes me happy. Thanks so much I've gotta get a Hapi Drum.

  • Thanks for the comment ! Glad you enjoyed it, feel free to contact me whenever you happen to be interested in getting one :) -- John

  • i prefer E integral scale =)

  • I have just drifted off in a cloud of beautiful sound. So peaceful.

  • nice...beutiful

  • WOW man!! that was owesome!!!! Very nice. Never herd nothing like that before.

  • wow never seen anything like that before

  • génial

  • wo0ow!!

  • awesome scale.. never heard such a scale!!

  • I rellaly like hangs, but doesnt this sound a little blurry? I think I have heard major tuned hapi hangs, where the notes ringed quite better when several notes where played.

  • a hapi is not a hang

  • i wouldn't call it blurry. it accentuates that specific percussive sound from the contact with the metal, which i think is a nice bonus.

it gives both a nice tight slapping sound plus that thick hum/ring. goes great together in my ears! :)

  • The more i watch videos with steel frums, the more i am confused about what i actually want to purchase ))) MILLTONE, Hapi drum, Eclipse 1tone drum, Halo drum. ...they are all unique and have their own special characteristics... but i would prefer the new HALO drum better (alternative to da hang drum) , thoug it is still much more expensive than the other ones. Cuz it's more like DRUM you know with a lot of techniques to play with. .. Though Hapi has higher range of scales to choose XD

  • John ,

I really like this mellow playing. I keep coming back to this video since this is my new key/scale. While I'm still adjusting to the new scale, I really like the how effortless it is to play my new D Akebono. The lightest touch rewards with beautiful sounds. Gloria

  • I'm thinking about getting one, but i want to get a custom paint job, like the silver one, but i don't know what is a good type of paint. any types in particular?

  • Personally I'd worry less about the colour but the scale you want. I highly recommend my E minor drum. And the D Pygmy

  • Do you know where i can get a pygmy?

  • got vids?

  • AWESOME!!!

  • omfg

    very well played

    good music

    never stop playing

    you are good.

  • awsome play!

  • How long has John Pascuzzi been playing?

  • Playing the Hapi Drum? Less than a year.

  • you can really hear the big resonance, pretty cool and beatiful sound!

  • sounds like a steel pans

  • the sound that comes out of hapis and hangs always seem ilke there coming from like a computer or something its amazing

  • I dont like the look of it.

  • kind of sounds like a hang drum

    maybe?

  • I want one of these now

  • You should perform at our summer arts festival. People would love it !

  • Cool Man!!

  • neat never seen one of these before who invented these?

  • man....those aliens are gonna be pissed when they find out what you are doing with their spaceship..

  • niiiice

    lol

  • XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD jajajAJJAjAjJAjjajAjA Vry Niceeeeee sounds like steel pans

  • :D :D :D

  • @boomtastic67 i think the aliens might like that sacred sounds

  • you could totally play Japanese koto music on that with that scale!!!!!

  • lmfao that does look like a spaceship drum

  • man....those aliens are gonna be pissed when they find out what you are doing with their spaceship...

  • so are you really posting this same message on all hang drum videos to get + points? hmmm?

  • lol I noticed the same thing! haha

  • ash did i haha

  • No sixt33n....not trying to be that clever....just being silly...you have to admit that it does look like a flying saucer!!!!!

  • must admit, it was funny the first time i read it. but after seeing the same comment over and over, face went -.- you're a good sport. kudos.

  • That Sounds amazing! Cool...

  • this color looks sorta like iron man!

  • trance!!!!!!

  • The sound is like a Vibraphone and Marimba

  • When i first saw the hang i really wanted one but the price was way to much. i will probably get one of these. the sound is amazing. the sounds are different enough from a hand that it is not like replacing it or anything. i think i might acctually prefer the HAPI's sound to the hangs cause it is. a lot clearer sounds almost like a harp or something. so yeah. i really want one

  • very nice!! great sound!!

  • i think the sound is fantastic and i'd love to have one and a hang drum aswell.

    realy cozy and laidback sound.

    keep up the harmony man!

  • so this scale is essentialy aeolian?

  • yep, pretty much, you are correct. The Akebono scale is a traditional five-note Japanese scale. In a Western context, it can be thought of as a pentatonic version of the Aeolian mode.

  • pretty cool. i assume these are very expensive to find so i probably shouldn't bother?

  • $350-ish

  • hmm, no im gonna go with HANKS arnt as good, due to their poor portability.

Hangs are the best, but are very rare, so Hapis fill the hole nicely ;)

  • Actually you are correct... I should have specified what scales they have available... and I'm sure your exactly right about having them custom make one based on a requested scale. Thanks for the correction. :o)

  • Hey the good thing about purchasing from Hapi is that you can get it in any scale you want... too bad there is a waiting list for them... (feb 09)

  • Actually, I'm not sure if u can get it in ANY scale you want. Their website only shows E Major/Minor Pentatonic, D Major/Minor Pentatonic, E/D Akebono, and E/D Pygmy. I guess those are the most in-demand scales, but if you were to ask for say, a Zokuso scale, I doubt that they would make it due to the amount of extra labor they would have to put into it and the lack of popularity of that particular scale. However, if I would be VERY pleased to know that my suspicion is incorrect

  • From my experience, 'non-standard' scales can be bought for an additional $35. There is presumably a physical limit by how many semitones you can tune each note by but I'd suggest you just ask for a personal tuning. I could be wrong.

  • Additional $35 added to the already additional $75 for Akebono/Pygmy?

  • According to the website it's $350 for standard, $385 for custom tunings, as far as I can see.

  • Okey dokey then, thanks :)

  • Amazing... i love it

  • great...sounds for me like an early Andreas Vollenweider vinyl.

This thing or a CAISA (or hang?) is the next thing I need to have.

  • 380$

  • Incredible instrument, how much do they cost?

  • *You must be really good at simon

  • You must be really good a simon

  • Around one minute it reminds me of Welcome to the Machine by Pink Floyd

  • Didn't have that in mind at the time, but I do love that song!

  • It still sounds REALLY cool and unique.

  • It's a haunting and beautiful sound. I want one.

  • its a magic sound!!

  • Is there any place in mexico where i can get one of these?

  • you can make one out of a propane tank apparently

  • Wow... i got how on earth you manage to more your hands so fast and accurate is beyond me just yet. Practice makes perfect :)

    I love this drum

  • Amazing... after watching some of your flicks - decided to get myself a Hapi.

Keep em coming m8, ther'e an inspiration to a lot of us :)

  • Well, not all of us can spend a 10,000$ on an instrument, now can we?

Besides - you should listen to their sounds, these are just two diffident instruments man.

  • well not everyone is in a position that we can go to the hang haus, and pay 1400 dollars on a hang. for me, the hapi is a god send. im saving up for one.

  • i just can't get how you're easy on comparing such differents instruments...

and i do agree with the mates before me saying the hang is WAAAAYYY too exansive.

the fact is that that percussion sound-sculpture is so expansive cause Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, the hang inventors and builders, do not care about how many people would like to experiment with their invention, prefering to keep a "small constant business" instead of allowing more people to play theyr great instrument...

  • I totally agree that quality dominates over quantity...if that's what you meant??

I'm not even going to argue if you can compare this to the Hang Drum. However, it is obviously an innovative idea branched off an unprecedented instrument, the Hang Drum.

Having not heard the HAPI played in person, I cannot judge the exact sound quality. However, from watching multiple HAPI demos I can conclude that this new "awesome" instrument has very low sound intensity and tonal quality.

  • actually the HAPI is more close to a tongue drum than a HANG, while this last one seems more to be an evolution of the steel drum.

anyway i was arguing about the fact that the HANG is so expansive -around 1000 euro- while it could be less expansive, with no lack of quality, expanding the quantity of instruments produced so more people could be pleased to play it.

  • The problem with expanding any kind of production, is not to reproduce the form.... moreso to be able to reproduce the tone. With the Hang, each note is also tuned with it's 5th harmonic, and it's octave. In essence, 3 notes ringing for every one note struck. In addition controlling the size of the chamber to tune the resonance of the Hemholtz cavity within. It all becomes so much more complex than a tongue drum. Only one to come close is Kyle at Pantheon Steel. He has a true love of the art.

  • I put in a per-order for the Akebono scale! Such beautiful music, can you teach it to me via DVD? I wish!

  • That was are absolutely breathtaking ~ no kidding, dude ~ i forgot to breathe! Thank goodness it was only 3m! lol

This is me, standing up ~~> Bravo!!! Bravo!!! MAS Bellissimo! Quello era assolutamente FAVOLOSO!!! Più! PIÙ!!!

Well, since i'm actually american, i guess i can say it in english, too: DAMN, dude! You freakin' RULE!!! More!! MORE!!! lol

  • Thank very much Wendy! :)

  • this one's my favorite song from u. u should do more songs with minor scale hapi drums.

  • Nice drum and nice playing man :)

  • imma sorry but i hate how the hangdrum brothers wont just sell their instruments to anybody u have to write down why u want one if they love music so much they should wanna sell it to anyone who wants to go into a different dimension of music...

  • I agree - what's so great about the HAPI is that each basic model can [presumably] be tuned at construction time pretty quickly into each of the scales so loved by Hang players.

  • and i bet you could put some sort of magnet under the tounge to change the sound if you felt so moved!

  • That is false. If you have done more research, you would have found that the Hang makers, Felix Rohner and Sabina Scharer, are very busy. Production is said for until 2009. Then, they are going to take a break from making them. If you send a snail-mail letter to them, you can get on the waiting list for the next generation of Hanghang (plural of hang). That is, if they make a new generation of Hang.

  • awsome play!

  • love it when u slam your hand into it,cool musics

  • love the hapi, looks just like iron man,lol

love the sound though..soothing,with an urban yet mystic twist

  • Beautiful tones and /subtle/ use of video effects make for a highly enjoyable clip. thank you!

  • I keep coming back to this vid, it is so relaxing and mellow. I love that tone, I am trying to learn by watching. I want to be able to play my HAPI as well as you someday. This is so cool. :) I just love my HAPI. Thanks for posting this vid.

  • your hapi drum looks like iron man.

    sweet demo, by the way.

  • is your hapi d major or minor?

  • what is this? incredible sound

  • oh I'm jealous! I love that version! But I love my brand new HAPI too :) I'm very happy with it.

  • whoa it looks very pretty! I like it a lot^^

Will you play some Igil for us anywhere soon? I'd love that!

    Steph

  • like to get one.like the sound.5stars,fav.mary

  • I looked for that drum on the site, how do you get one like that??

  • That one is on Ebay, we have a long list of regular orders at the moment and only have a few in custom colors that we'll have on Ebay from time to time while we catch up with production. The standard colored ones can be custom tuned to that scale though, in E or D, for $35 more than the regular price.

  • Beautiful!!! I enjoyed listening , nice experimentation! do go on!V

  • thank you, glad you enjoyed it!

  • wow this is neat!

  • Great video again ! Tks !

  • Once again, great playing on the hapi!

  • Nice one John! That Ake Bono sounds really nice on the Hapi. If times weren't so tight, I'd get one myself. You've got a great style on it my man. No wonder these are becoming so popular! Keep the music love a flowin' my friend!

  • Thanks very much, man! :)

  • awesome as usual man keep up the good work \m/

  • John; As usual, totally awesome piece of work. I love this tune, the D scale is wonderful too. I don't know how I'll do it, but I am going to try and get another one. Seems one isn't enough! LOL! It might take a while, but I love this tone and tune so mellow and relaxing. Carmy

  • That is very lovely. Whats is that tune? It sounds familiar.

  • Ahhh...so beautiful. I am so glad to see one painted so fantastically. I have one on order. October won't come soon enough!
