This song is significant to me personally in numerous ways.... being 15-ish when it was released, it was automatically my favorite from the SFTBC album. Unbeknownst to me at the time, it would come to explain the rest of my life as a corporate worker; but more importantly, was an introduction to jazz when I didn't even know what jazz was ! And they are still one of my favorite listening choices to this day.... I guess that's what people refer to as timeless:-)
OMG, not only a masterful song, but I wish I would have paid more attention to the lyrics when I was 15 ..... I only liked the music back then but now these lyrics are the story of my life
When I was about 17, I would listen to this on LP using headphones whenever I'm mad at everything that was going on..kept me from doing something really bad and stupid to myself...I guess it was my working hour on keeping myself sane. 22 years after..here I am listening (and watching) to this again to keep my sanity intact.
@Boredin81- Tragically underrated?! It was one of the most defining albums of the 1980s. I'd rather say their very first album- 'The Hurting' was kind of underrated or rather more overlooked as an album than Songs from the Big Chair ever was.
I agree, this could be for me their best song. I am so pleased I kept my video tape ' Songs from the Big Chair' by Tears For Fears I bought in the late eighties, I think I will watch it tomorrow.
I miss the 80's too. Nothing has come close to the variety and quality of music produced during the 80's. Thanks god for YouTube. It's may it possible for my fav 80's bands to tour again (fixx, tff, english beat).
That modulation before the "find out" part is so freakin great. It builds up to that slowly, and then it's such a great payoff. Fantastic songwriting and arrangement.
You know their music (especially this song) just takes you to another place ... makes you forget everything. Its so different from everything else. I got my 17 year old neice listening to this now ... she thinks they great ... but she has not clue its from the 80s!!
This was amazing, thank you whoever you are who posted it. I played this to death on my video recorder as a 16 year old after watching and recording it in 85. What a massive trip down memory lane and as excellent as I ever remember!!
The saxophonist Will Gregory is now one half of retro-electro pop duo Goldfrapp... This appearance on 'The Tube' is possibly the first and only time Tears For Fears (and their backing musicians) adopted a stage uniform - arran jumpers being all the rage in '85! (either that or it was bitterly cold in Newcastle in March!). Soon after this appearance Curt slicked back his hair and starting wearing brightly coloured 'muscle' sweatshirts, and Roland (being Roland) just did his own thing...!
I remember watching this on The Tube, they closed the show and despite having had big hits with 'Mothers Talk', 'Shout' and 'Rule the World' they chose to perform two down-tempo and relatively unknown album tracks in 'I Believe' & 'The Working Hour', two songs which didn't appear to go down too well with the audience. Personally i think this was Curt and Roland's revenge for when presenter Jools Holland introduced them as 'the worlds most boring band' the last time they appeared on The Tube...
hi, You really made a very good choice of songs to listen. try listeniNg to SHOUT, MAD WORLD, THE HURTING, WOMAN IN CHAINS, EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD, CHANGE, PALE SHELTER, ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART, YEAR OF THE KNIFE, LISTEN, BADMAN'S SONG...I'VE BEEN THEIR FAN SINCE 1982, NOW THAT I HAVE MY OWN TWO BOYS, I INTRODUCE THEIR SONGS TO THEM AND THEY ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.LIZ-MANILA
from "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" try "Size of Sorrow","Who You Are"and "Ladybird" all slow beautiful songs.better yet listen to the whole thing from start to finish.plus what iluvTFF said, especially "Pale Shelter" "Bloodletting Go"is also a MUST!! enjoy!!
For your kind information, the saxophonist that you are talking about- William Gregory- the one who is playing in this video is the same guy playing in that live video in Massey Hall in Canada (or in a concert hall in Munich) and is also one of the guys who plays it on the actual record as well. There is nothing wrong with his playing here. The only difference is that he improvised a bit more on the live version of the song which was recorded in Canada/Germany.
You are right! Upon reviewing and comparing both video again, I realised they are BOTH the same guy!
My bad! Sorry! But I still feel the improv version does not work for me. (It still sucks) becoz it felt like he is rushing into it unlike the other one.
No problem! Sound is a subjective experience anyway. So, what you find terrible need not be the case for another person or even vice-versa. Well, I also like the live version as shown on Scenes from the Big Chair. But if you notice, in this version none of the members- not just the saxophonist- are playing exactly in the same way as the aforementioned concert. Perhaps, there was a time constraint issue due to which they had to do it this way and you have to realise that this is a lengthy song.
Yeah, that could be it, maybe due to the time constraint. And you are also right the whole band does not to be 'in sync' with each other at times!
Many years ago, I was watching a documentary/music video of Tears for Fears in Concert as it shows behind the scenes preparation of both concerts and music video. The Working HOur performed in it, in one of the concerts blew me away!
BUt could not find them anymore/anywhere. Oh well . . .
I know exactly which documentary you are talking about. Get the 'Scenes from the Big Chair' DVD. It was re-released in DVD format three years ago (the earlier one was on VHS). It should be available everywhere. It is the best footage of TFF you will ever get to see and it also includes a very interesting interview with Chris Hughes, their producer which was shot in March 2005 (exactly 20 years after Songs from the Big Chair was released).
Wow! Where did you get this rare footage from? It's amazing. It is even earlier than the footage shown in Scenes from the Big Chair documentary. Thanks a lot for uploading!

Songs From the Big Chair will always be on my all time best albums list.
This song and every other song on it are probably the best work ever from Tears for Fears.
Although I love the Elemental album and Raoul they really never have held a candle to this.
I was sorry to see that the boys got lamb basted on their last album Everybody Loves a Happy Ending.
That album stands up well on its own.
but none of their other albums came close to this
