  • Great! Sounds like a prog band!

  • the working hour shows off there talent as musicians love those guys

  • i used to have goosebumps every time i hear this song.. until now.. love it a lot..

  • Been a fan since 1983 and this song still stops me in my tracks. Very good song.

  • Love this song!!!Wish they'd perform it once again when they tour!

  • best song ever.

  • Not only TFF's best and most underrated song, but possibly the best and most underrated song ever written by anyone. Makes me cry. :)

    And Roland sounds SO GOOD.

  • This song is significant to me personally in numerous ways.... being 15-ish when it was released, it was automatically my favorite from the SFTBC album. Unbeknownst to me at the time, it would come to explain the rest of my life as a corporate worker; but more importantly, was an introduction to jazz when I didn't even know what jazz was ! And they are still one of my favorite listening choices to this day.... I guess that's what people refer to as timeless:-)

  • OMG, not only a masterful song, but I wish I would have paid more attention to the lyrics when I was 15 ..... I only liked the music back then but now these lyrics are the story of my life

  • For sure... my fav TTF piece (of art). Beautiful, sends shivers down my spine... Love you guys!!!! xxoo

  • When I was about 17, I would listen to this on LP using headphones whenever I'm mad at everything that was going on..kept me from doing something really bad and stupid to myself...I guess it was my working hour on keeping myself sane. 22 years after..here I am listening (and watching) to this again to keep my sanity intact.

  • This song was developed from riffs they played on sound checks. I really like the sax bits by Will Gregory (now in Goldfrapp).

  • Wooow, Roland sounds really, really good here. Love love love it

  • 25 years ago, that is insane. Great song-writers. Something fresh, interesting, complicated, and original to come out of the 80s. Great stuff TFF

  • "FIND OUT. FIND OUT. WHAT THIS FEAR IS ABOUT!" - utter amazingness

  • Hey where's Paula Yates? love TFF the most genius band ever!

  • how many people noticed the all white shirts???

  • it gives the shivers!!! best song eva!

  • Love the sound of Roland's voice!

  • Best song ever, no doubt.

No matter if it's the studio or live version, it will always give me cold shivers.

One ques: What is Roland doing with his guitar, constantly strumming the strings?

  • Great Song

  • another comment , listen to the range in Roland's vocals -

  • Please, tell me more? :D

    (I'm like a-techinal, I'm sorry)

  • Best music from the eighties.

  • Who is playing bongos?

  • Turn it up as loud as you can. WOW! The power of this song will send you through the roof. A+++

  • This is a great performance of one of the best songs of all time all cathegories IMO.

  • For die hard TFF fans this is the easily the fan favorite of all TFF songs. This is also one of Curt's favs from their entire catalog.

  • Amen brother :D

  • @TearsForFearsFan You're damn right. It used to be everybody wants to rule the world for me but once I heard this there was no comparison!

  • @TearsForFearsFan Agree 100%, this is my fav from TFF and probably the most under rated song of the 80's.

  • Songs From the Big Chair will always be on my all time best albums list.

This song and every other song on it are probably the best work ever from Tears for Fears.

Although I love the Elemental album and Raoul they really never have held a candle to this.

I was sorry to see that the boys got lamb basted on their last album Everybody Loves a Happy Ending.

That album stands up well on its own.

but none of their other albums came close to this

  • @JeffTheNebraskaDJ agreed, Songs From the Big Chair is the best, and tragically underrated

  • @Boredin81- Tragically underrated?! It was one of the most defining albums of the 1980s. I'd rather say their very first album- 'The Hurting' was kind of underrated or rather more overlooked as an album than Songs from the Big Chair ever was.

  • Correction to the lyrics... with all due respect....

Those that pay us definitely DO NOT learn by our mistakes!!! They just want to get paid and go home. It's the American affliction.

  • legends

  • You know guys this is my favorite song working hour very cool........ i wish i could play with them....

  • I just realized he looks a lot like John Cryer (Duckie) from Pretty in Pink...wow !

  • I agree, this could be for me their best song. I am so pleased I kept my video tape ' Songs from the Big Chair' by Tears For Fears I bought in the late eighties, I think I will watch it tomorrow.

  • lucky you.

  • This was their best song too in my opinion. The lyrics, the melody and harmonies are all complex yet easy to listen to.

  • I miss the 80's too. Nothing has come close to the variety and quality of music produced during the 80's. Thanks god for YouTube. It's may it possible for my fav 80's bands to tour again (fixx, tff, english beat).

  • God Damn!! I miss the 80's...Where can u get tis kind of music nowasday!!

  • Tears for Fears is one of the best group for me...Very cool band.

  • Rolly sounds like he's in a bad mood here.

  • Thanks for the upload of this great tune !

  • Who's on the guitar with Roland and Curt?

  • His name is Andy Sanders. He played live with them during the SFTBC days.

  • That's cool.

  • great live performance - very similar to the original!

  • one of their most underrated songs.

  • This is the working hour..

We are paid by those whose who learn by our mistakes

  • fear was a vicious thing for me; it used to wrap me up in chains but no longer. im a free man thank u Jesus

  • No one can top them.

  • no one can top them AND no one can dupilcate them

  • That modulation before the "find out" part is so freakin great. It builds up to that slowly, and then it's such a great payoff. Fantastic songwriting and arrangement.

  • You know their music (especially this song) just takes you to another place ... makes you forget everything. Its so different from everything else. I got my 17 year old neice listening to this now ... she thinks they great ... but she has not clue its from the 80s!!

  • onetoalwaysremember...

  • what a nice song!!!

  • This was amazing, thank you whoever you are who posted it. I played this to death on my video recorder as a 16 year old after watching and recording it in 85. What a massive trip down memory lane and as excellent as I ever remember!!

  • raisetheawardintotheair...

  • thepersonintheaudienceholdingupthe

    cameraandyoutube...thankyou...justa

    mention...didiforgetgod.

  • See, how come no one had a mullet like his? Best music best shows, and best Mullet of the 80's hands down!

  • The saxophonist Will Gregory is now one half of retro-electro pop duo Goldfrapp... This appearance on 'The Tube' is possibly the first and only time Tears For Fears (and their backing musicians) adopted a stage uniform - arran jumpers being all the rage in '85! (either that or it was bitterly cold in Newcastle in March!). Soon after this appearance Curt slicked back his hair and starting wearing brightly coloured 'muscle' sweatshirts, and Roland (being Roland) just did his own thing...!

  • I remember watching this on The Tube, they closed the show and despite having had big hits with 'Mothers Talk', 'Shout' and 'Rule the World' they chose to perform two down-tempo and relatively unknown album tracks in 'I Believe' & 'The Working Hour', two songs which didn't appear to go down too well with the audience. Personally i think this was Curt and Roland's revenge for when presenter Jools Holland introduced them as 'the worlds most boring band' the last time they appeared on The Tube...

  • Nicky Holland on keyboards

  • Thank you so much for posting this ... So much!! Kudos and Peace to you :))

  • Who is that on the sax?

  • If I had to choose a favorite song of all time, then it would have to be the working hour.

  • I'll second that

  • Manny Elias is one awesome drummer. Without his drumming excellence, TFF wouldn't have done as well.

  • Roland was a god ! Thanks for uploading !

  • IS a god! so is Curt. Check out NOTP 2008 in Germany. You can't keep a good band down!

  • Peço desculpas aos mais puritanos e sem querer ofender...ESSA BANDA É BOA PRA KCT!!!

Sou suspeito em elogiar uma especificamente. Gosto do repertório completo do Tears For Fears.

  • do you have more videos from this concert?

  • dunno if i like the song more or Roland

  • Someone please recommend me more T4F songs like this. I only find this and head over heels the ones I like. But I LOVE them.

  • hi, You really made a very good choice of songs to listen. try listeniNg to SHOUT, MAD WORLD, THE HURTING, WOMAN IN CHAINS, EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD, CHANGE, PALE SHELTER, ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART, YEAR OF THE KNIFE, LISTEN, BADMAN'S SONG...I'VE BEEN THEIR FAN SINCE 1982, NOW THAT I HAVE MY OWN TWO BOYS, I INTRODUCE THEIR SONGS TO THEM AND THEY ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.LIZ-MANILA

  • from "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" try "Size of Sorrow","Who You Are"and "Ladybird" all slow beautiful songs.better yet listen to the whole thing from start to finish.plus what iluvTFF said, especially "Pale Shelter" "Bloodletting Go"is also a MUST!! enjoy!!

  • "Ladybird Text Animation" LISTEN!!!

  • sea song!

  • The saxphonist guy sucks in his rendition for this! Otherwise its great song by Roland And Curt.

The one Live in Canada (or Munich) from apeldo0rn is better I feel!!

  • For your kind information, the saxophonist that you are talking about- William Gregory- the one who is playing in this video is the same guy playing in that live video in Massey Hall in Canada (or in a concert hall in Munich) and is also one of the guys who plays it on the actual record as well. There is nothing wrong with his playing here. The only difference is that he improvised a bit more on the live version of the song which was recorded in Canada/Germany.

  • You are right! Upon reviewing and comparing both video again, I realised they are BOTH the same guy!

My bad! Sorry! But I still feel the improv version does not work for me. (It still sucks) becoz it felt like he is rushing into it unlike the other one.

Anyways, appreciate the head up there! Thank you.

    Mezza

  • No problem! Sound is a subjective experience anyway. So, what you find terrible need not be the case for another person or even vice-versa. Well, I also like the live version as shown on Scenes from the Big Chair. But if you notice, in this version none of the members- not just the saxophonist- are playing exactly in the same way as the aforementioned concert. Perhaps, there was a time constraint issue due to which they had to do it this way and you have to realise that this is a lengthy song.

  • Yeah, that could be it, maybe due to the time constraint. And you are also right the whole band does not to be 'in sync' with each other at times!

Many years ago, I was watching a documentary/music video of Tears for Fears in Concert as it shows behind the scenes preparation of both concerts and music video. The Working HOur performed in it, in one of the concerts blew me away!

BUt could not find them anymore/anywhere. Oh well . . .

    Thanks again

    Mezza

  • I know exactly which documentary you are talking about. Get the 'Scenes from the Big Chair' DVD. It was re-released in DVD format three years ago (the earlier one was on VHS). It should be available everywhere. It is the best footage of TFF you will ever get to see and it also includes a very interesting interview with Chris Hughes, their producer which was shot in March 2005 (exactly 20 years after Songs from the Big Chair was released).

  • got the dvd this week. you are right.some of TFFs best work. Roland is quite amazing. they are all amazing.MESMERIZING.

  • sorry, saw this after I posted my comment

  • hey its William, the same guy in both!

  • Wow! Where did you get this rare footage from? It's amazing. It is even earlier than the footage shown in Scenes from the Big Chair documentary. Thanks a lot for uploading!

  • this a good one..

  • Fantastico video Fede!Roland e Curt sono la fine del mondo
