5x = 850 - 85

wouldnt it be 5x = 10x - 850 - 86?

why is the 10x gone in the next step?

Yes, but that leaves you with 5x = 10x - 765

Hence 5x - 10x = -765

Hence -5x = -765 or 5x = 765

the error is that you forgot to put a minus sign at the 10x you swapped to the left, the left would result : -5x because -10x + 5x = -5x.

Your youtube problem (age problems 2) took only a minute to correct, BUT in a real classroom such things can take --semesters.

Further, this puts the teacher's faults on the student and the student must fix it--This happened to me in chem--I retook it with a teacher I could understand. We covered only about halh the material, but it was all absorbed, then I was able to do the "rushed half" on my own

I think he's wrong. 85 years ago Tarush's age was 5x - 85 but 10 times 5x -85 which would be 10(5x-85)> Am I wrong? If so, can someone please explain.

@tripstonefox i don't understand what your question asks. 85 years ago, T's age was 5x-85. The 10 comes from the relationship between T's age (5x-85) and A's age (x-85), whereby T's age 85 years ago is 10 times A's age 85 years ago.

At the end of the vid Sal was exploring how old both people were 85 years ago for curiosity sake.

It's simple subtraction. Tarosh -> 763-85 = 680
