Actually it takes just as long as you see here in this clip. In the anime series, the transformation is enveloped with an "energy barrier shield" to protect the ships from attacks while transforming. Though I vaguely recall that in one episode, that an enemy robot successfully intervened during the transformation sequence.
@jonjonbalaos if it helps, in assault to macross city in srw alpha gaiden, other robots provided cover for the gattai robots (at least, they show an example with Getter dragon beign covered by a VF-1

Yeah, that was the Choudenji Tatsukmaki episode where they had to master said technique but they never combined with it.
....Sure it WASN'T the actual attack but the lead jet's modded blades looking kiiiinda familiar.
