couldnt have Secretariat and Ruffian raced together since this was in 1974... so that would be a year after belmont... secretariat could of still raced her. I wonder if she would have survived though..
@emmaleahmaria Barbaro isnt the only horse u can compare her to... there is also Man o War, Zenyatta, Eight Belles, Big Brown, Rachel Alexandra and Secretariat....
I saw her jump out of that gate and into first, I knew she was the best there ever was from the first time I heard about her in school. Just heard the name Ruffian, and I knew there was something about her that was special...
I looked her up, and saw that she had broken down in a race, and then typed Ruffian in on Youtube, and a movie came up! I watched it, and then couldnt look at a horse for nearly a month....
Ruffian is the greatest filly, if not horse of all times. Zenyatta comes next. But I think if those two had raced together, Ruffians determination would have won. Both are amazing fillies!
@MsRockerGal44 i agree but i <3 them the same, mabey Z a lil more... if they raced how they normaly won, Ruffian would have whooped Z's butt. but if they both ran Ruffian style, idk who would win but it would be very close i assume...
ohmygosh did you knwo that Go For Wands last race was on the ame as ruffians and wanda broke her leg JUST AS SHE WAS RACING PAST WHERE RUFFIAN WAS BURRIED!
in theyr last races both girls were ahead by a neck and both did injuries to there RIGHT leg/ankle!!!
thats just kinda creeps me out but to of the most talented and amazing horses!
I love and miss this Filly soo much! she will truely always be the Queen of the Track! Ruffian showed us soo much! she was the Filly that proved that Girls can be Ruffians too. we can do anything a guy can do. this filly was truly amazing! and will never be forgotten!
@tmustang94 ah u just 4got a filly (:D somethingroyal she made a famous colt that they r makein a vid of him this october 8th (:^)) its..... Secretariat (8D
I wonder what the first 1/4 of this race was ran in? It really looked, as near as you can tell on the video, like Ruffian was really cruising. I'm thinking about 22 and change, but that's just a guess mind you?
Pupdog, from the bad of racing comes the good. Such as the polytrack/synthetics. also they have since last year began to be stricter about medications/drugs. Also your basically saying the ALL in the industry are these oh so horrible people and treat their horses badly. Which of course is not true.

At least she ended her career with a bang. Racing is amazing to witness, but behind the scenes i personally like the slaughter better. They do some pretty bad things to the horses. Like a tb's b day is January 1st so if a foal is born Dec 31st it is "one years old" the next day. So when it races next year, it is still only a yearling! If they waited a few years, we would have happier healthier racers and more exciting races! Stop the cruelty! Look what racing did to horses like Black Gold!!
There are definitely some issues in thoroughbred racing- one of the main reasons I chose the standardbred sport-but there hasn't been a December 31st foal registered as "1"the next day and raced a year later- ever, as far as I know. Simply not the case. In the rare occasions that horses are born before Jan 1, they simply miss the two year old races. But even this never happens because mares are not bred until March at least, and so do not give birth the new year.
i doubt that would ever happen though, unless the foal was premature. the breeding season shouldn't officially start untill february 1st (at least not in england) and it may be another month or so before a mare come into season, so most foals are born in february. i doubt a yearling would ever run a race! but i undertand what you mean about horses being too young though - i personally think that the first 3 years of their lives should be spend in the pasture before training!
Couldn't help but notice your member name. I'm almost finished with a song I started about Phar Lap. Not sure when I'll get it done. My hay baler guy needed some extra help, so I've been spending most of my days in the fields right now, baling hay. probably our most famous harness racer here in the States was Dan Patch. I have a song and video posted on him. Thanks for watching!
@TheExoticAnimal She was trained in the u.s and raced most her starts there. U.s tracks differ majorly from Australian racetracks so i could understand if an Australian horse broke down there or vise versa. I have just seen a majority of U.S runners break down(like this) especially on dirt tracks. i'm not saying there's anything wrong with racing over there at all just thought maybe the dirt tracks had something to do with it prehaps
yeh i think that she was known to run like that but sorry it mite be a completely different racehorse. but i think thats just her natural run....... thats probably why she won so much!! =)
I saw Seattle Slew funny stride... When I wached his races he was standout because of that... She picks up her front leg more then the other horses.... She had beautiful, long stride....
Ruffian knew what she was from day 1, all the great ones do. She had the heart, the drive, and an unlimited amount of sheer physical ability. She wanted to run and she took it personal if another horse tried to take the lead! They don't make many like her,she was special!! RIP Big Girl!
You can see the greatness from the moment she busted out of that starting gate. What a ride we had for the next two years! She is my favorite horse and always will be. Rest in peace, love.
she was one of the most graceful, beautiful elegant racehroses, or just any horse i have ever seen. ♥ such a disappoint when she passed..she had so much left to live for
Did anyone see how she bumped that poor horse that came out of last gate... as ifto say, get out of my way, I'm comin' thru !! Rest in Peace sweetheart
@wcrimi, definitely the fastest, with the most blazing, front running speed I ever saw. IMO, Ruffian would have eaten Rachel Alexandra alive on the front end!!

It appears the video cut out right after Ruffian crossed the wire. If you look closely at the end you can see the jockey stand up.
