The fire needs to cross the portal in order to light it. Get a plank burning, then put a second plank on the other side of the portal so that when the fire tries to jump to the second plank, the portal is in between.

@minecraftwb to light a piece of wood lava has to be touch its side while flowing and the fire need to be on the side of the wood that the nether portal is to it so the fire is in it, carefull lava will deactivate a portal
