  • Could anybody tell me what the music is between 1'30" and 1'50" please?

  • @wildforestman i want to know too :) ... anybody?

  • is it just me, or does it seem like the little whiny voice that says about "James Burke has the answers to the way the world works..." seem like someone who has literally no grasp of any of the ideas developed in the program?

  • no not just you it seems that way to me too.

  • OMG! I lohhhhved this show!!! :-D

  • It just dawned on me that when I used to watch this series with my Dad, he was the same age as I am, and my kids are the same age as I was back then. My Dad sure seemed old back then, I'm sure I seem much younger to my kids (yeah right!!).

The one difference is, used to watch every one with interest back then. This time, my one kid disappeared half way through the first part, the other lasted to slightly after the second part. Oh well, maybe they will be interested some day (sigh).

  • Attention span is steadily decreasing over time... information overload is increasing. It's difficult to put yourself in the mindset of a typical teen or younger these days. Everything they do is multitasking and you never know what's getting in or not.

Let them work it out for themselves. It's the only way.

  • @JamesBurkeWeb

But does it reflect attention spans in general or just television watching attention spans?

I´ve watched these stories of Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, Kepler, Newton thru many different TV series. Since the Ascent of Man of Bronowski, Cosmos of Sagan, The Mechanical Universe of PBS,Connections of Burke and so on. I am the only one in my hometown who has, a cousin of mine was half interested too, but just about half as I was. I´m 50 now, and for 35 years that has been my experience. Interest in these themes is rare, there may be one or two teenagers for every 1000.

  • The PlayStation era is well and truly upon us!

  • superb delivery, engaging and extremely informative and succinct. An absolute must watch all 5 episodes, do you have this on DVD series somewhere James?

  • First, I am not James Burke. Just a lowly fan... the channel name often confuses people. It used to be called JamesBurkeFan but I deleted that channel for various reasons you don't need to know about, and replaced "Fan" with "Web"...

As for the DVDs, see the main channel to purchase them. $150 per series (as opposed to the $800 that it used to be just a year or so ago!).

It would really help to mention this channel, if you can, when you purchase a DVD to help keep this channel alive.

  • Beautiful, thanks for this! I remember watching these Saturday afternoons on PBS, as a child.

  • Me 2.

Then one day it struck me that perhaps I could find them somewhere on the net and post them here for my own son to watch.

Of course he never actually watched them but I guess he might... one day.

  • "necessity" is the most powerfull force on nature, it is the mother of all inventions and what eventually drove humanity to explore its environment.. : )

  • Gravity is awesome.

  • And about the most misunderstood of all the known "forces".

It's an interesting fact that we are even *aware* of gravity since, barring anything "in the way", it would not be detectable by any means.

  • Ah, yes that is called gravity
