@zagnonian Generally you can tell progressive by the rhythm section changing often. A good coupla bands to check out for this stuff is SymphonyX and Cacophony

@zagnonian You'll know it if you hear it. Think of Blotted Science or Dream Theatre. Its a style, that often incorporates complicated jazz scales and weird timings, and is more about skill than black costumes or face paint or being "tough" etc.
