  • Lars might have changed his idea...seems legit. At the beginning of TEH FASTS INTERNEZ, several musicians may have thought that file sharing could actually harm their wallets Now, almost everyone of em has realized that their wallets are still full and even fuller. The only one suffering from it is the goddamn stupid fucking ass licking RIAA. Which could, and hopefully will, disappear one day.

  • Its funny how years later when overwhelming evidence now shows Metallica were right and people are still not getting what they were fighting against. It wasn't downloading, it wasnt technology, it was the choice of the artists in how they put out their music. Why is this such a hard concept to understand? Napster took what wasnt theirs and gave it away, Metallica give away free music still to this day! The issue was control, not downloading, and every band has the right to where their music goes

  • @axl409v Its just shitty ignorance like this that really shows just what people were really bitching about, that they were caught out in their true motives..the only thing people really cared about is getting music for free..thats the bottom line and if that means stealing it, then thats what they do...they dont care about the artists, they dont care about the technology or other issues, just plain simple greed..its how society is today and the napster incident really showed peoples true colors

  • @axl409v Metallica had every right to sue Napster, but the minute they did it, it was clear that they were now a corporate band. I mean, this was a band that used to give out free copies of their albums at concerts in the 80s. They always called themselves a band of the people, and now they were blatantly going against what they stood for. The fact is, that in many countries, music is either overpriced, or hard to get, which is why many download music for free.

  • @axl409v Also, those that download a band's music are highly likely to go see one of their concerts. IIRC, in today's music, concerts are the biggest source of an artist's revenue. Many people download a couple of albums at first, and then go out and buy the rest of the artist's discography. It's ridiculous to assume that everybody who downloads music are just plain greedy. It's a good way to get a sample of an artist's work before buying their music.

  • At least he isn't like Prince or Bono.

  • The band lost their connection to the fans a long time ago and I don't think Lars ever really had one with the fans. The truth is, that, nowadays more and more bands are making their money from internet sales than anything from "record stores". Lars realizes, I think, that he doesn't have a choice in this day and age. Unfortunately, Lars has developed an Axl Rose sized ego and can't see beyond his own inflated opinion of himself.

  • Lars said once that, yes, he hated that people were downloading his music for free....but he said he didn't like when people downloaded it before the song was even released. He doesn't care about stuff that he already released

  • The info box says ''A few years back'' it was 12 YEARS AGO. Thats more than a few

  • Fuck Lars !! Fucking Billy Joel looking mother fucker !

  • Ahmid is kind of Scary...

  • "Truth will out"

    -Billy Shakespeare

Lar's tirade against P2P sites showed us he places his money above his music.

  • Al-Sharif is hot!!

  • @nsvelvi he look like a zombie

  • 1:11 \m/

  • I was a huge Metallica fan. I wore a Metallica shirt every day in high school, bought all their tapes.. bought them again on CD.. yeah.. that sucked.. but heh.. I was a fan. Went to a few live shows.. etc.. They used to allow bootleg audio at concerts.. I don't know what happened, but I haven't spent a dime on Metallica since they went after their fans (Napster).

Ya'know what? I don't miss them.. they can piss off. Now, 2011... It's like.. Metalli-who?

  • @dslynx

I totally agree! I lived in the Bay Area when they were getting started and went to a lot of their gigs. They were really something! But I wouldn't cross the street to see them for free today.

  • Adjustment is difficult. Bravo to Lars for having the intellectual integrity to admit that the sharing of music through the Internet isn't always an insidious affair.

  • His forehead just blinded me!!!!!

  • THESE GUYS WERE THE BIGGEST FAGS OF ALL TIME. They were going to make money anyway. Hardcore punk Bands like TSOL never gave a fuck about money. It was all about having fun.

  • i couldn't agree more with you

  • I couldn't help but laugh at Lars's fail.

He must be eating crow for this.

  • 1:22 Cloud Connected

  • Dr. Cal Lightman would have a field day with this interview.

  • Love his shirt.

  • He's Danish

  • I dont really like Lars but he is not really eating his words here, necessarily. Napster was for free so downloading music doesnt mean you get it for free!

  • @davis311c But he also says the word "share", which implies he himself was thinking about file sharing XD

  • Nowadays, tickets are more expensive than a mere CD. I mean do Bands realize that?if more fans LOVE you more tickets to sell then more money.

  • Yeah. I think this guy's a fucking idiot.

  • downloading can be cool to a point - if you do not buy physical CD's then you are the douche bags. and Napster was very much in the wrong - they profited from it. it's stealing when it comes down to it - Lars (whom I'm not a fan of) did the right thing - if not things would really be out of hand by now, much worse than it is .

  • Props to the beginning "Cloud Connected" by In Flames coming in at the end.

  • Scott Ian is exactly right. Its stealing. period.

  • As I understand it, bands don't make much off of album royalties anyway. They make most of their money off of touring and merchandising as I have read.

  • @MrSmittyLongsleeves

    They do now.

  • lars is strange. cant they just clone like dave lombardo or something and give him to metallica? not someone who killed the guitar solo for 10 freaking years.

  • excuse me for asking but what city is that in the beginning?

  • @goldlessbassist it's Riyadh the capital city of Saudi Arabia :)

  • i download shit loads of music, ive got all metallica's albums though

  • I think Lars is a piece of shit, but he thought he was getting robbed by a bunch of E-thugs he reacted how anyone would have he's changed his opinion so fuck off.

  • @bluescribblefy You can buy the album on mp3 ;D freeloading someone elses stuff, even if it's not ruining the music industry is a shitty thing to do...not every musician is rich with 100 cars and a massive house anyways, and don't have a big audience because no radio play...that will grow if they continue, but to make it anywhere in music anymore, because of all the money downloading costed the music industry, is extremely expensive

  • lol!watch the kid left at 0:23

  • @dripwire haha he looks retarted ; p

  • @WikiHeba96 He is :)))

  • @GhostriderDuck66 but i love him anyway xD

  • @dripwire My reaction was kinda like his face, when I saw his face XD

  • @bluescribblefy You can'tget anywhere without having the resources to make an album though...you can't just expect to start off with your shows and have people coming there as soon as you start...the record sales are the little kick that every musician needs to get the concerts to be the big event

  • WOW just WOW This from the man who personally went on a holy crusade to rid the internet of down loadable music FUCK OFF

  • Wow how where the other guys not fuckin pissed at Lars for saying such bullshit. Music is an art form not money and if someone was breaking a law just to hear my band I would be fuckin ecstatic man. To Lars Ulrich FUCK YOU!

  • Anyone who thinks downloading for free is good doesn't realize that it doesn't just take a few dollars away from the big bands...but record companies lose money, when they lose money, they charge more to record...that affect new bands trying to make it

  • I think Metallica was pressured and/or bribed by their record label to fight against Napster. If Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony Music, Geffen Records, had come out against Napster, there would've been serious backlash against the industry by fans claiming that the companies were just in it for the money. If a popular band came out against Napster, the youth of the nation would stand behind them...in theory, anyway.

  • The only thing illegal downloading has done to music is force these musicians to make their money playing live and not relying on over-priced CDs to make a living.

  • @NailgunDeath True that, friend.

  • If you can purchase an Iron Maiden T-Shirt from whatever country you're in, you can purchase the CD too. They have singles released for us to get a taste of the music and see if we want to purchase the full product. I purchase music, and I'm proud of it.

  • Comment removed

  • you all fuckin suck and a buch of looser who cannot buy a fuckin 18 $ cd's fuckin punkass bitch.... you have to stole it on the net.... GET A JOB OR WELLFARE

    ASSHOLES

  • @chicorardot I can make you look like an idiot online, but I'm not. Instead I will explain why you sound so fucking IGNORANT. If you pay attention to their originating countries, they are from the Middle East, where Western Music, ESPECIALLY METAL metal isn't available to purchase in disc, vinyl, or cassette format. Therefore, websites like Napster were somewhat a blessing to these men and or women.

  • @thrash6664 I'm pretty sure they can buy iTunes at $1 a song with all their oil money. They dont censor their internet like China, its all available there. They even have Starbucks.

  • @disbsam333 Of course, these are all recent. The Napster case was in 2001 I believe.

  • @thrash6664 CRY ME A RIVER !

  • Lars along with Metallica, are all dead to me.

    CLIFF WAS METALLICA!!!!

  • @thrash6664 cliff waz amazing but waz not a one man band common big !! on c.d.'s or at the show it waz not CLIFF BURTTON WITH metallica

  • I'm a huge Metallica fan, but Lars' move against Napster was rather uncalled for. He had no idea that it was bootlegs that helped get his band started in the first place

  • llllllars

  • You're to late Lars.

  • I WANT LARS ULRICH TO PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE WITH METAL FANS AROUND THE WORLD.

  • I wouldn't call him a hypocrite, but he definitely changed his stand on internet distribution, but I think he's only speaking in terms of legal channels like napster (lol), iTunes, etc...

Music distribution should never have been about owning a physical copy of an album. Music is all audio. There is no physical or visual component required to hear great music other than hitting play. Overpriced album sales for a Vinyl/CD to offset production costs is bullocks and shouldn't exist online.

  • "it's awesome"???? Few years ago that fuck was talking about putting into jail everyone who used internet to listen to his songs....

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    IDIOT!

  • I would not know music like I do now if it weren't for downloading albums for free.. I would be broke and unable to support myself without it, Its a endless debate.. But music is music.. It should never be something to get rich from to begin with.. I'm starting to believe record labels should cease to exist.. I mean look at all the crap in the top ten charts now.. It makes me puke out my ass with frustration

  • @EyEnOtgAy they have to make the money somehow. the point isnt getting the music for free......thats a criminal offence. HOWEVER what apple has done is the right fucking way to do things.........with itunes you can get whatever song you want for just a dollar a piece allowing you to choose what you pay for. I on the other hand choose to support the bands making the music by buying the albums straight from stores.

  • @katana1361 NOW ON THE OTHER HAND. i do feel for these kids out in the middle east......my hat goes off to them. but for someone living in NORTH AMERICA..........there is no fucking excuse for hijacking music

  • OMG YOU MEAN PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR MINDS?! SHIT! WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT THAT SUCH A THING COULD HAPPEN?!

  • @tallicalad OMG METALLICA ARE FUCKING ASSHOLES,,WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT THAT SUCH A THING COULD HAPPEN???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • At the end I hear Cloud Connected by In Flames coming in lol

  • did here that Core Bitches METAL is gonna grow!!!

  • lars is starting to look like john lithgow where i used to think he looked like paul mccartney. i guess that makes sense,if 'tallica are the beatles of metal than james and lars are the john and paul. id have to say jason was the ringo, one writing credit on an album? very ringoish

  • Wow... you have no idea why they sued napster... do you? -.-

  • vital remains shirt!!!:)

  • Basically Lars was on the wrong side of history. Period. Unlike those of us who saw the real potential of Napster and the Internet, Lars was a dinosaur defending a quickly becoming extinct distribution model. Given the vast change in distribution that happened in the last ten years, he has no choice but to support it. Otherwise he'd look like a guy believing the Earth was flat despite evidence everywhere to the contrary.

  • @JimmyDaKoik He has to support it. There is a belief by fans that their band's in it for the music, not the mega bucks. Metallica broke that, coming out looking like mercenaries. Also, when multi-millionaires are thinking about hiring lawyers to sue their fans, many of them kids with no money anyway, it makes them look bad and has no economic sense. I am glad Lars has had a rethink about his position and moved forward.

  • @JimmyDaKoik True

  • @JimmyDaKoik - Alot of the bands I like (mostly foreign) I would have -never- heard about without the internet and file sharing. For example: Dir en grey, I got into them in 2003 at the suggestion of a friend online who was obsessed with Japanese Music. Went on P2P and randomly downloaded their stuff and loved it. Flash forward 8 or so years and now they have a massive cult following, albums available thru a U.S. label (no more tracking down $40 imports) and sold out U.S. concerts.

  • And had Dir en grey's Japanese record label (Firewall Div. / Free Will) gotten all butt-hurt about their intellectual property being freely available to everyone around the world and decided to pull a Lars, they would have been shooting themselves in the foot and killing any chance of DeG's fanbase expanding outside of Japan, so no reason for stateside albums and Johnathan Davis wouldn't have even known they existed so he wouldn't have invited them to play Family Values in '06.

  • @JimmyDaKoik its because lars always was use to going into a tower records and buying the cd

  • he was always ok with the internet sharing music business what he fucking hated it was that people was downloading music before the album came out stupid bitches!! i hate that oh well.. umm if they did that umm i dnt like their music anymore blah blah stupid motherfuckers fuck you! if you think that way because i know people like that!!

  • Metallica is very easy to buy, compared to the other 'underground' music. Metallica has the support of one of the biggest publishers which has contracts with most distributors. Then there are this musicians that only publish their music sheet or start their own label to publish their own music...

  • lars ulrich looks like brian peppers

  • 0:20 guy on left was on acid!!!!

  • @Hawkeye8u no no no. he have been listening to metallica too much, the brain goes retard

  • Is this edited?

  • I still hate Lars Ulrich for this.

  • 1:11 PORTUGAL :D

  • i never thought i'd see lars with an angry face. until i paused at 0:33 xD

  • haha even when youtube and all the hundred sources of free downloading were available, death magnetic sold more than 2 million copies. His band still kicks ass and is the best in the world, and you still get free music. So fuck off and admit that he was right at the time when Napster almost bankrupts the music industry. Now is different.

  • @estnobcar thank you finally someone smart :)

  • In flames cloud connected starts at the end of the clip thumbs up

  • Wtf? These dudes don't look like arabs O_O

  • so he changed his mind and realized that he made a mistake. what a big deal. get over it already

  • I think those kids breaking their metallica CDs are fucking stupid. why? because someone else downloaded what you have? and because metallica is super rich and they dont deserve to make more money in what they busted their asses for?

Im pretty sure if you own something and I come and take it from you without your permission whether you need it or not .... YOU WOULD NOT FUCKING LIKE IT. and suing Napster was fucking a great idea.... they were making money off of their site with other ppl shit

  • @drummersabu

Please come and take my agonizing girlfriend. I forbid you.

  • Ahmmm... I im a huge fan of Lars, because of that!

He is a Metal head, since beggining, ALSO he knows how to deal politically , how to make money, how to sell his words, and his band...

Metallica is big, not because of their music and stuff only... but the media also!

And the main reason for that, for sure is Lars Ulrich!

This is all about being smart, and fuck with people's mind =]

  • @Eluryyyyy metallica didnt have any media till after justive. they got there through word of mouth, touring and realsing classic albums.

to this day they still get fuck all airplay.

  • @Eluryyyyy

very welll fucking said. I love metallica. Im not a huge fan of lars but you got that fucking right. I could tell you because im a musician. and you can have the music and whatever but you have to know how to sell it and promote your band. man.... good fucking point.

  • hypocrite

  • That guy "Ahmid" from saudia arabia, HE DOESN'T LOOK SAUDIAN AT ALL!!!..

    Thats all staged.

  • @Metayounis there is a vast amount of people from Saudi Arabia that are a white. Same in Israel. Where have you been? there are black Americans there are black Britons etc same as there are white africans and white middle easterns.

  • @markssite Believe me.. i had business in the middle east, My job made me travel to saudia arabia and i know exactly how people look, and their accents are different.. Believe me thats kinda staged, and besides.. It's not "Ahmid" It's "Ahmed"

  • fuck lars ulrich.

  • lars ulrich, needs no introduction

  • Is it me or has the guy in the green tshirt filed his teeth to points?

  • SADUS!!!!

  • lars ullrich is a douchebag

  • People still don't realize that who gets money from album sales are record companies, bands get rich from touring and making shows.

  • @linegenrou

I earn 85% of every record sale so I don't really agree with you on that.

  • "I think it's awesome that kids can download our music. As long as they fucking pay! "

    Lars Ulrich music Nazi

  • VMAXDANIEL- Unfortunately you are wrong. Stealing means taking something that isn't yours. You can't make up your own definitions and hope that it fits. This means you can never steal a film? And who gives you the right to dictate who does and doesn't have creative ownership over their property?

  • Dude, Metallica got angry because people were downloading songs from an upcoming album (St.Anger).. -.-'

  • Sharing is caring

  • where is this from, the guy asking lars the questions sounds like the guy from "metal-a head bangers journey

  • @garrettgerbil13 Global Metal... a film by "the guy from "metal-a head bangers journey"

  • I don't see what's wrong here, Lars is a retard but he made perfect sense there.

  • blue oyster cult! rawr!

  • @thewolfsironheart1 haha thats the first thing i noticed

  • the biggest douche of the digital era

  • did anyone else think those arab guys looked shifty as fuck?

  • @liamfrantic don't all metal fans do?

  • @liamfrantic nah, i just think you're a racist, xenophobic cock and a tool for the manipulators. y did they look 'shifty'? did you see a bulge under the IM tshirt? did they resemble the bush family? or hitler? or what?

  • @bastardson73 no they were stood there with retarded grins, and there eyes were all over the place, i didnt say anything racist, or anything related to terrorism, or hitler or bush, so erm....yeah you fail

  • @liamfrantic whatever... 'shifty' and 'retarded' are very different descriptives. i stand by my assertion

  • @liamfrantic didnt say anthing racist...? i think thats a matter of perspective;

"those arab guys looked shifty as fuck": many ppl WOULD rightly feel that was a racist statement... its not like you said "those arab guys had retarded smiles"

  • Whiny little Lars got his fweeing hurted. :(

Did I mention he looks like Billy Crystal??

  • I am so glad I'm not a musician. You all can say there's no harm in it, but definitely more than half of music is pirated now, meaning the artists/producers get less money for slaving over that track you nicked. At some point, no money will be made and you all will no longer have new music to listen to. (cue the thumbs down and swearing insulting replies)

  • Well, Shark. All I got to say to you that I couldn't give less than a damn about piracy, and I actually do plan on being a labeled musician. Hell, when I first made music independently, I distributed it for free; it's not about the money, it's about the love.

  • @Shark7996 No thumbs down or swearing insults here. I just find that comment laughable. In the 80s there were people with banners everywhere saying 'Home Taping Is Killing Music' (google it). The fact is you have to embrace new technology, harness it and learn how to use it to your advantage. Artists today have the largest interconnected network known to man at their disposal, they can make themselves the producer, recorder and artist without all of the corporate hierarchy in between.

  • @Shark7996 Money was never made by CD sales. The majority of it goes to the store and record company. The REAL money is made from touring and selling your own merch. Bands have been exchanging music for a long time. How the fuck do you think early metalheads around the world found out about other bands? Through tape trading. Downloading music is the new-age tape trading and everyone knows it. The only people who bitch are the ones in it for the money, not the music, and shouldn't be supported.

  • Does this mean Lars will apologize to Shawn Fanning???

  • I'm Egyption too !!!

  • You have to understand Lars, it's hard to say: "10 years ago saw things in a different angle and I acted like a bitch in menopause."

  • Download a song = steal a chocolate bar from a store

  • 0:22 oh look a fly

  • Lars can suck a huge cock. He doesn't care about the music anymore, now it's all about the money. Fuck all the musicians who have no integrity!

  • @Kapitan234 what lars is saying is that internet is a good way for young people to reach music!!!

  • METAL IN THE MIDDLE EAST!!!!!

  • Ah metallica please come to saudi arabia for fucking gods sake!!

  • 1:11 YEAH PORUGAL!!!

  • And now as the RIAA tightens its grip and is going after children and poor people this fucking asshole is "at peace"???? Remember if it wasn't for him none of this would even be the way the way it is!!! FUCK YOU!

  • at the end of the video was the begining of "Cloud Connected" by In Flames!

  • the real problem is not napster or sites like it..the real problem is digital music...once the hard drive crushes..or the mp3 evolves in to something else old music disapears....and the only people that have the original music is the record companies..example gnr live at the ritz 88 is not really gnr property is mtv and is not on dvd for some reason...and that's the best recorded live show ever...we have to wait for mtv to get it...that's the problem......

  • @wrabit79 Your right!!

  • Lars Ulrich. My hero for life :)

  • NAPSTER! NAPSTER!

  • Awesome Sadus shirt is awesome!

  • Fuck yeah in flames at the end. shame it got cut off :(

  • hes not eating his words. they were fighting napster about the fact that they were allowing the song i disappear to be downloaded b4 it was released.

  • He's not eating only words, but cocks aswell.

  • metallica sucks anyway

  • @AroundThePony

    Metallica rocks

  • The internet didn't help music it made it saturated, now every douche bag on every corner has a shitty band. And the bands that are actually good don't even get noticed because it's so disposable, a good cd is a worthless as a 1gb flash drive. I can download anything I want but I don't appreciate the music unless it's something phenomenal because I've been desensitized to the artistry, creativity and work that was put into it. My friend had a band and couldn't even give his tickets away.

  • Thanks to the internet now there are bands in the middle east such as. Iron camel, The dark sheik, sandallica, Black jihad, and many more.

  • @kalosanin2 a racist metal head?.that's a first.

  • @neobogard Are u retarded? have you ever heard for NSBM

  • @kalosanin2 sandallica? lol clever...

  • There is a Huge change in mind perception about internet back in 97-98 on what we have right now.

Lars didn't ear his words he just change his paradigm

  • So for all the lazy people that can't go to work because they're too lazy and think they should get many things for free, here's your confession. By the way, WHO is making money here? That was nappy boy back when that's who.

  • lol in fllames at the end

  • @JoNnYShizzle And Vital Remains, lmao.

  • fuck lars...........download "illegaly" or free won't change anything to is fortune

  • @chestus12 I agree

  • Using the internet to share/steal pre released music/movies/software ect... is surely wrong but if the material has been issued already i don't see the big deal, Sharing music always happens, before and after napster, how many of you ever borrowed a metallica cassette from a friend(that's how i first found out about them) Remember the bootleg days, pirated copies are what got their name out, i can't remember anyone freaking out about the dual cassette recorders that where sold by the millions!!

  • egg head!

  • Ingen kan lide dig, Lars!

  • @EikC Hvaf f''' snakker du om?!?! Han gør mig sku stolt af at være dansker!

  • Sadus. Iron Maiden. Vital Remains. Man, the Middle East has awesome tastes in metal. :D

  • It wasnt about losing money, it was about losing control.
